Poor Amber has been bullied for most of her life, but there's one boy who is the harshest of them all. Jake is controlled by his girlfriend, Courtney, to do anything she pleases. Emily is the best friend in love with the boy, Finn, in the bully group. Everyone is wearing a mask. Everyone is in disguise.

3. Sorry

*A Few Days Later*
"You're such a bitch," Courtney growls at me.
"And a nerd," Jake joins in.  Yep, they got back together and are back to teasing me.
"How am I the bitch, huh?" I stick up for myself this time. I'm alone in the hallway since Finn and Emily already went to class. "I don't pick on one girl for no reason. And I don't hide behind mountains of makeup," I glare at Courtney. "Also, I'm not a nerd. I prefer geek," I glare at Jake now. "Geek means I love video games and anime and things like that. Now, I have a class to get to," I turn on my heels and walk away.
My phone vibrate in my pocket once I'm almost to my classroom. I pull it out and quickly read the text.
'I'm sorry' the text from Jake reads.
'How can I trust you?' I quickly text back before shoving my phone back into my pocket.
*That Night*
"I just don't get it," tears flow down my cheeks.
"It is okay, Amber," Emily rubs my shoulders. "He's an idiot. Probably confused as well. You'll get through this."
"Will I? I'm sick and tired of him. I don't want to go to school. I need a day off."
"Call in sick tomorrow then. Say you have a migraine."
I sniff, "Okay. I think I'll do that."
My phone vibrates and I quickly snatch it up.
'It’s a reputation thing with Courtney. She doesn't like the idea of me hanging with someone like you' Jake's text reads.
'Why did you get back with her?" I angrily text back.
"Is it Jake?" Emily asks.
"Yes," I wipe my cheeks of the tears.
"I'm going to make dinner. Give you some time," she stands up and exits the living room.
Now to face Jake's newest text.
~Jake's POV~
'Why did you get back with her?’ Amber's text reads.
That's a very good question. Why did I get back with Courtney? She said she was heartbroken and her brother was threatening me.
'Her brother was going to hurt me if I didn't.' I text back. Lame, I know, but it’s all I got. Besides, it is the truth.
'Oh, okay. So, you have to come and find me to tease me?'
'I'm sorry, I really am. I'll leave you alone if I don't see you. Well, if Courtney doesn't.'
'She's the one who wants to tease me?'
'It’s complicated.' She doesn't want us to be together, I want to text. She knows I like you. I'm in love with you and she doesn't want us together.
'Okay. Whatever.'
'Um...I'll talk to you later then.'
Gosh Jake, why are you so stupid. It’s all Courtney's fault.
"Finn!" I yell.
"What?!" Finn yells back.
"Let's box!"
*The Next Day-Late Morning*
"Where is she?" I ask Finn.
"She's home sick with a migraine," Finn says as we exit the classroom.
"Hey boo," Courtney skips up to me and kisses my cheek.
"Hey," I wipe the mark where she kissed me when she's not looking.
"Amber isn't here. Too bad," she shrugs.
"Probably lied about being sick so she didn't have to put up with your shit," Finn says.
"Excuse me?" Courtney looks at Finn.
"You heard me. Oh, and don't come over to our house again," he motions to me. "You are no longer welcome." Then he storms off. Good job Finn.
~Amber's POV~
"He'll pick you up just to knock you down," I sing to The Summer Set's song Mannequin. Taking a day off from school was a perfect idea. I've just been dancing and singing in the living room all day.
My phone makes a ringing noise so I check it out.
'Are you really sick?' Jake asks.
'Why do you care?'
'I don't want to get sick when I come to give you your homework.'
'Why are you bringing it?'
'Emily and Finn are going to look at cars for you guys. That's why.'
'I'm not contagious.'
'Good. See you in a few hours'
*A Few Hours Later*
"I don't understand you," I say as Jake sits down next to me on the couch. I don't have that much homework, but he really wants to help me.
"To make up for everything," he looks into my eyes.
"Bullying isn't nice."
"I know. How many times do I have to say I'm sorry?"
"Till I say you don't have to anymore."
"Sounds fair. Now to the homework."
"No, why does Courtney hate me?"
"She doesn't hate you."
"Then why doesn't she let you hang with me?"
"Um, she thinks that you're better than her."
"Of course I am! She's a bitch and I'm the girl who does as she's told."
"You could have anything if you tried for it."
"I could.”

“All she has to do is complain to her older brother to get whatever she wants."
"She was nice once."
"Liked me for me."
"Helped others."
"Enough of this," Jake snaps and looks at his shoes.
"Does she make you happy?"
"No," he shakes his head.
"I could make you happy."
"What?" He looks back at me
"Nothing. Just talking to myself," I give him a small smile. "Let's get to the homework."
