I was never sure about unconditional love when you're a teenager, not for someone that isn't a family member or close friend, but I got proved wrong. Apparently you can have unconditional love for someone who you've only known for a month, the kind of love that won't fade through anything, even if you want it to.

13. Thirteen

One night at dinner me and my family are about to go to our table when Jack's family calls us over to sit with them. It's really sweet seeing my family with theirs. Plus, I've been wanting my family to spend more time with Jack. I know they like him a lot but I want them to really get to know him.

I go over to Jack and he grins at me, standing up and hugging me.

"Hey." he kisses my cheek before pulling away. "It's good to see you."

"And you." I smile up at him.

"Cas, move." he says to Cassie who was sat next to him. She frowns.

"No."

"Oh, she doesn't have to move." I say. "I'll go sit with Hannah and your mom."

"You're not sitting with Hannah and my mom." he chuckles. "Cassie can sit with them."

"Whatever, put your stupid summer girlfriend you're going to have for two months before your own sister." she mutters, getting up and going to the other end of the table.

"Ignore her." he says as we sit down.

"She could have sat here, I didn't mind." I tell him.

"It's fine." he promises, smiling at me and taking my hand under the table. "Do you want to come back to mine after this? Your family are welcome to-"

"Everybody, I have news." Lilly announces out of nowhere, the biggest grin on her face. "You're never going to believe this."

"I'll bet it won't be that hard to believe." Cassie mutters under her breath .

"Lucas is coming on vacation here!" she squeals. "Here! Next week! He surprised me!"

"No way!" I exclaim, so happy for her. To her, this is a dream come true.

I see again how nice his family are when rather than disregarding the news as something not that important, they ask her all about it and talk about all the things she and Lucas can do while he's here. I also see how infectious this whole family's energy is. My mom and Nat both look so happy to be here and genuinely interested as Lilly tells them all about Lucas.

All of us are walking back to their cabin after dinner and Jack and I are lingering back a little to walk together.

"I can't believe Lucas is coming here." he says and I laugh a little. I knew he was annoyed, he'd been quiet all dinner.

"I thought you'd gone a little pale when she said it." I tell him and he laughs but it's disheartened.

"I just don't get how my little sister is at the age where she's seriously dating boys." he groans. "I hate it. She used to be so cute."

"She's not seriously dating anybody." I promise him, putting my arms around him. He chuckles and puts his arms around my waist, spinning me around before setting me down and kissing me.

"As long as you're not in love with some douche called Lucas." he says and I'm laughing when Cassie shouts us from where they all are, far ahead.

"Will you two hurry up?" she shouts and he sighs.

"Maybe Lucas can replace her in our family for the summer." he says.

I feel bad about him and Cassie not getting along. Even though it's not me doing anything intentional, it is my fault. I remember when I first saw them together and they hugged and got along really well and I want it to be like that again. I decide then that I'm going to do whatever I can to make Cassie like me because then maybe she won't be so mean to Jack. When I decide that, I realise I might have something more serious than I thought with Jack. Not serious in a bad way but serious in the sense that I don't care if Cassie's mean to me, I just really don't want anybody to be mean to him. It feels kind of intense. It has only been two weeks after all.
