The Last Date || Ashton Irwin

Ashton will save me. I know he will.

1. The Last Date || Introduction: When I was younger.

At 5 years old I wanted to be a princess. I wanted long, thick flowing hair complimented with a diamond tiara and an elegant pink gown. I wanted to live in a castle with prince charming, and butlers, and talking birds. I wanted the impossible, but of course, my mother tried her hardest to give her baby girl what she wanted. A cardboard castle, and a plastic tiara was the closest I got.

At 10 years old I wanted to be a vet. I wanted to save beautiful animals, small and large. I wanted to look owners in the eyes and say ‘This gorgeous creature is going to be just fine’. I wanted to make a difference in the world. My mother started to work her magic, and one morning I woke up to a soft bark. My very own puppy was the closest I got.

At 15 years old I wanted to help people. I wanted to be able to talk to somebody, and make a genuine impression on their lives. I wanted them to go away and think ‘wow, she’s right. Life is worth living’. My mother had just divorced my father after learning he had been cheating for 5 years. Helping my mother was the closest I got.

1 year later my mother announced the news that she had cancer. The doctors had given her 2 years to live, and our worlds came crashing around us. Had I known then that my mother would die in 4 months I would have tried so hard.

On the day of the funeral I realised that the only thing I wanted to be, was my mother. A loving, caring soul that put her baby girl’s life before her own. That loved me unconditionally no matter how much stress I put her under. My mother was the greatest person on this earth, and nobody could make me think otherwise.

Now, I live by myself. The only reason I’m living at all is because of my mother, I push on through life because I know that she wouldn’t want me to join her up there. Not just yet. But my life is a mess, and I’m struggling to hold on any longer.
