4. New Territory

I sat up and spat blood out of my mouth. I groaned as I felt the broken bones through my body rushing to heal themselves. I do heal quickly, but it still hurts. I knew something was wrong with Macayla because the pupils of her eyes expanded and her whole eye went black. If there had been time, I would've warned Chloe. Honestly, there was nothing either of us could have done. A burst of pure power exploded out of Macayla and hit us with a force unlike anything I had ever felt before. There was an excruciating amount of pain and I was flying through the air. I hit a tree enough to fracture my spine and most of my ribs. It took a full 5 minutes for me to even be capable of moving while my body tried to save itself.

When I could focus on something other than the pain, I began to panic. Chloe could've easily gotten impaled by a tree branch and if it hit her in the wrong spot, it would kill her. I assume Macayla's own power didn't affect her, but it could have and if it hit her like it hit me, there was no way she survived.  I stood up shakily and sent out some thoughts, trying to find Macayla and Chloe. I did find them, but all I could sense was that they were far and fairly injured, but alive. "Macayla! Chloe!" I screamed. There was no response.

God damn Chloe, she just had to kill that human. Sometimes I wonder about what she is really capable of. Killing the human Macayla like right in front of her face was just awful. The two of them fought a lot, but this might be the end of their friendship.

After about 20-30 minutes, I was finally back to peak physical form, but something was off. I couldn't put my finger on it, but my body didn't feel right. Nothing hurt any more, but there was a slight tingling sensation in my throat and an ache in my jaw. Everything looked different, I couldn't exactly tell, but everything looked clearer. It might just be because the entire forest look like a bomb dropped on it. Every single tree within a 5 mile radius had been absolutely flattened.

I got up and went to Macayla first. She was just laying on the ground in a small circle, about 5 feet around her, that looked absolutely untouched. Unfortunately, there was a tree branch around 6 inches thick was stabbed straight through Macayla's stomach. "Fuck." I said. I needed Chloe for this. Vampire blood can help heal all creatures heal more quickly than any other blood. My blood would help Macayla, but for this sort of injury, we would need both Chloe and myself to even stand a chance.

"Oh shit." I heard from behind me. I spun around to see Chloe looking about as awful as I felt a minute ago. Her clothes were ripped, she was half covered in blood, and her hair was a tangled mess full of branches. She looked at me, looking absolutely pissed. "Well let's do this." She said, wasting no time to tear into her arm with her teeth and walking over to bring it to Macyla's mouth. I really hated doing this. Sharing blood is for vampires, not my kind, but this was Macayla.

I leaned down on Macayla's other side and ripped the branch out of her stomach. I didn't look down, I did not want to see my friend in this state. Then, I ripped into my own arm, hardly noticing the pain. I put the dripping blood into her mouth. In blood sharing, there's a definite exchange of power as the person's life force is swirled around with yours, but this was different. There was something electric flying through my veins and my vision was literally changing by the second. My eyes would focus in, out, blur, get amazingly clear, etc. This wasn't like any blood sharing I had ever done.

"Do you feel that?" I asked Chloe. She looked at me and her anger was gone, it had been replaced by concern and confusion. Macayla finally moved, gasping and coughing on the blood in her mouth. Then she instinctively clamped down on our arms. Even with this weird power exchange, I relaxed a little bit. If Macayla was conscious and drinking our blood, that meant she was going to heal.

After a minute or two, I looked down at Macayla's bare stomach and thankfully saw there was no mark or hole, only residual blood. Macayla suddenly smacked my hand away and I looked down at her face. Her eyes were wild and startlingly purple. I almost jumped back because she didn't look like herself. Since she was of the royal bloodline, she had inherited the dark purple, almost black of the bloodline. The only people whose eye color brightens so dramatically are the vampires...

"What the fuck did you do to me?" Macayla growled in a very raspy voice. "Saved your god damn life. No need to thank me for my generosity or anything." Chloe said sarcastically, completely unaware to Macayla's altered looks. "It's not like you just blew out miles of forest and almost killed both of us. I wouldn't worry about it."

"Chloe, are you not seeing what I'm seeing right now?" I asked her, still watching the change in Macayla's face. Her features were literally changing in front of my eyes. She had light colored skin before, but now it was downright pale and pasty. Her face was full of soft and warm features, but it looked sharper in some way. My brain was whispering thoughts in my mind, impossible thoughts. The only kind of transformation like this I had ever seen was in a vampire transformation, but it wasn't possible for Macayla to becoming a vampire. You need to feed on a vampire and then die within 24 hours to become a vampire and Macayla didn't fit either of those.

Her eyes were wildly looking around at the sky as if she was seeing it for the first time in her life. "We need to get home. Right now." I said. I didn't know what was going on, but I didn't want to be exposed like this while we were so vulnerable. "Fine, let's go." Chloe agreed, actually not being sarcastic for once in her life. "I'm going to call Tim, take her."

I grabbed Macayla and tossed her over my shoulder, her weight feeling like absolutely nothing to me. She did not move or speak. My mind was racing and I was trying to find a solution that wasn't the obvious one, but nothing was coming to mind. We were actually pretty deep in the woods, so it took me about 20 minutes to run all the way home. Thankfully, Tim was already there and Chloe was right behind me. Chloe and I explained the situation to Tim while Macayla sat at the kitchen table and stared at the wall.

Tim looked at us, only mildly surprised by our story. I guess his years working with us had made him go almost numb to our outrageously insane life. He looked at Macayla and in a swift move, he grabbed his keys out of his pocket and cut the tip of his thumb. Macayla was up and out of the chair and going to attack him within a second, much faster than any human. Chloe had barely enough time to grab and restrain her. It was obvious that I had been right, her eyes were their unnatural purple and her fangs were bared.

I might have noticed more if I had not also felt a burning pain when Tim cut his thumb. It was all I could do not to jump Tim like Macayla did because the smell of his blood hit me like nothing I had ever smelled before. When I hunted, the smell of my kill was amazing and made my mouth water, but this was more than what I was used to. The sting in my mouth made me reach to my mouth and much to my surprise, I had fangs popping out of my mouth.

While Chloe restrained Macayla and threw her down on a chair, I sat down on the floor. What was happening? There is no possible way for this to happen. I put out my hands and willed them to turn into cat paws and they automatically did, much to my surprise. It is possible for a shapeshifter to become a vampire, but in doing so, they lose their shapeshifting powers. This just did make sense.

"Ok what is happening?!" Chloe yelled, frustrated. Tim's eyes were wide, but he remained calm. Chloe was pacing in front of him and Macayla was tapping her fangs with her hands and crying silently.

"I honestly don't know." Tim began. "I don't know how you two possibly became vampires. I don't know how Macayla managed the power to destroy miles of forest on her own. I always knew you girls were incredibly powerful, but this is more than I was expecting. I have a theory. Chloe," She stopped her pacing to look at him. "Try and shapeshift." She looked at him and then looked at me. We were thinking the same thing, you can't become a shapeshifter, but obviously a lot of things were going on that shouldn't be happening.

Chloe sighed and closed her eyes. Within seconds she was an adorable husky standing in front of us. At this point, I couldn't even handle any more surprise. I had lost the ability to be surprised. Tim was staring at Chloe like she was some lab experiment that had just turned out exactly like he predicted. Chloe turned back into herself with the hugest grin on her face. She looked at me, opened her hand, and a flame appeared. She began to laugh. "Rain, try it." So I did try it, I willed it to happen like I would normally shapeshift. The underlying electricity feeling in my veins intensified slightly and with no effort, fire appeared out of my hand. Chloe began to laugh and began to set off mini fireworks.

She grinned at me. "I don't know what happened to us, but this is awesome and we are going to have so much fun."
