The Jungle Stallion

Zoe is just an average 14 year old girl, except she got news that her family was moving to South America for their jobs as biologists. She never wanted to leave her hometown in California, but she had no choice. Once they moved, she had no friends except the trees. Until one day, that all changes.

2. Chapter 1

It was a long plane flight away from home, my friends, my life, and I was already missing my lease horse, Cherry Pie. I never had enough money to buy a horse, but only enough to lease one. My family, and by my family I mean my Mom and Dad, were on our way to a village off the grid. From what I have heard, there are a lot of very nice people in it. Anyway, we are moving to this village in South America for a while because of my parents jobs, they are biologists which means a lot of traveling in the summer. Last summer we went to Canada, I bet you could imagine how cold that is compared to my hometown, Aliso Viejo, in southern California.  It is even hotter, and the humidity is unbearable! I don't see how I can live here until the middle of September, and right now, it is June 5. I crossed my arms and leaned back, so I could at least try and enjoy the bumpy ride. "We are almost there!" The driver yelled. My parents looked at me and gave me a smile. "Are you ready Zoe?" My Mother asked. "Ya", I replied, but I really wasn't. The truck started to slow down as some buildings were coming up ahead. I looked out the window to see the town, everyone was mingling with each other, children were playing, and everyone had a smile on their face. The truck came to a stop, and the driver hopped out. I opened the door and plopped on the dirt path and walked to the back of the truck to receive my luggage. The driver took out every single bag of the truck, including my little one full of grooming supplies. "Your cabin is down that path" The driver said. I looked over to what looked like a mountain bike trail that was under the canopy of the jungle trees. I couldn't see the cabin from where I was standing, but I knew it was out there. I grabbed all four of my bags and followed my parents down the trail. It seemed like an hour before we reached it.

"Here we are, home sweet home!" My father said. The cabin was made out of jungle wood and seemed to be falling apart. It was shaded by the trees, so I knew that there wasn't going to be much sunlight. A few feet away was a guest suite. "Can I stay in the guest suite?" I asked quietly. My parents nodded and followed me inside it. The door was really creaky as I opened it, but the inside was not was I was expecting. Everything in it was modern, the mini kitchen had granite, the sofa looked like we bought it yesterday. The flooring was a nice wood all throughout the kitchen, and the carpet looked brand new. The windows didn't even have a fingerprint on them. I walked over to the bathroom, inside it had a nice tile, with marble countertops. I walked out and headed to the bedroom, it was huge! There was plenty of room for all of my clothes. There was a walk-in closet that was perfect for all of my shoes. I set all of my bags down and hopped on the bed. It was so comfortable, that I started to sink into the mattress.  I got off the bed and walked over to my parents, "I think I am going to like it here." I said as a smile spread across my face. My parents took me into a group hug, "I think we are going to like it here too." My mother said. The hug stopped and they started to walk out the door. "We will be next door if you need us." She smiled and then closed the door behind her. I let out a deep breath and then walked into my bedroom to start unpacking.

About an hour later, my room seemed in place and everything had a spot. I looked out the window and could tell that the sun was setting. I walked out of the suite and into the main house. Everything was as modern as the guest suite. I could smell some food in the kitchen, so I walked over. There was a bowl of spaghetti with a note next to it that read:

Dear Zoe,

here is a bowl of spaghetti that we made for you. Our boss called so we are on our way to headquarters in Brazil, about 10 miles off. We don't know when we will return but we know that you can take care of yourself. Please stay inside at night because we don't know what it out there. Enjoy your meal!

Mom and Dad

I took a fork out of the utensil drawer and ate my spaghetti. Once I finished, I rinsed it out and put it in the dishwasher. I hurried back to the guest suite and locked the door. I walked into my room and slipped on my pajamas. I looked out the window and then I knew something was going to happen soon. I shivered and blanked out the thought. I crawled into bed, and fell to a deep sleep.
