25. You Were Next

Chapter 22

"You Were Next"

Avery's POV

When I woke up the next morning, I forgot where I was for a split second.

"Oh yeah. We're in France", I thought.

I turned over and tried to fall back asleep, but that wasn't going to happen. I was woken up by someone pounding on my door.

"Who is it?", I lazily said.

"It's Phil. Please come here", Phil said in a panic.

I wasn't sure what was wrong, but I got out of bed anyways and went to get the door.

"What is it, Phil?", I asked with my eyes barely open.

"It's Dan. He's sick", Phil said.

"What's he sick with?", I asked.

"Just come here", Phil said as he pulled me into his room.

As soon as I stepped into the doorway, I could smell the vomit and I could hear Dan retching in the bathroom.

"Dan", I said as I knocked on the bathroom door and covered my nose to mask the smell of the vomit, "are you alright?"

"Just fine", he said before vomiting again.

"You're a terrible liar, Dan. Do you need to go to the doctor?", I said.

"No no no. It's not that serious. Just...medicine would be nice", he said.

"I'll go get it", I volunteered.

"I'll stay here with Dan", Phil said.

"No, Phil. You need to go with Avery. You never know where Angelica and Ruth could be", Dan said.

"That's true. But will you be alright?", Phil asked.

"I'll be fine. Just don't leave Avery's side", Dan said, "Promise me you'll keep her safe".

"Promise", Phil said.

"Great", Dan said, "I'm holding you to that".

"We're going to get the medicine now, Dan", I said through the door.

"Mkay", he said weakly.

As we were walking out the door, we could hear Dan continuing to vomit.

Since we were already right in the heart of Paris, Phil and I just walked. We walked around Paris trying to find a place to get some medicine for Dan, but no luck. We could only find clothing stores and cafes. All of the signs were in French, almost no one spoke English, and the people that did speak English didn't want to help us.

Finally, after walking around town for an hour and a half, we found a tiny little pharmacy at the end of a narrow street.

"Parlez-vous anglais?", I asked the pharmacist, which was French for 'Do you speak English?'.

"Yes. Fluent actually", he said in a thick French accent.

"Oh thank God", I said, relieved, "Our friend is very sick and we need some medicine for him".

"I think I can help you with that. Wait right here", he said as he disappeared into the back.

"He was nice, unlike all of the other people we encountered in this town", Phil said with a shrug.

"Yeah", I agreed.

Just then, the man reappeared with a bottle of medicine.

"A few of these every 4 hours should do the trick", he said.

"Okay thank you so much", Phil said.

"Not a problem. You folks have a nice night", he said.

"Thanks you too", I said as Phil and I walked out the door.

We started walking down the narrow street when i heard a strange noise.

"Sorry, that was my stomach. I guess I'm just hungry", Phil said.

"Well, I saw a Starbucks a few shops back", I said as I pointed behind me.

Without saying a word, Phil spun on his heel and started walking in the opposite direction.

I followed Phil into Starbucks and I decided to just order a drink considering I wasn't hungry quite yet.

"One caramel macchiato please", I said to the cashier. I fumbled around in my purse for my wallet, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

"Avery, it's okay I'll get it. Don't worry", Phil said as he started to pull out his wallet.

"I'm sorry I think I left my wallet at the pharmacy. I'm going to go get it", I said.

"Let me go with you", Phil said.

"No it's fine. I'll be alright", I said.

"Are you sure? Dan told me to never leave your side", Phil said.

"It's just three shops down. Trust me, I'll be fine", I said.

"Okay. Just...just hurry back", Phil said with worry in his tone.

"I will", I said as I walked out the door.

I walked a few shops down until I had reached the pharmacy. Only this time, the sign on the pharmacy said ferme, which was French for closed.

The lights were on and I could see somebody inside. When he turned around, I instantly recognized him. It was the pharmacist from before. So I started banging on the door.

"Oh hello again", he said as he unlocked and opened the door for me.

"Hi I think I left my wallet here when I was getting the medicine for my friend", I said to him.

"Let's take a look, shall we?", he said as I followed him inside.

He walked behind the counter and searched for my wallet.

"What does it look like?", he asked.

"It's pale green with rhinestones on the edges", I said.

"Hmm...I'm not seeing it, but I'll keep looking", he said.

Then I heard the pharmacy door open and close. I assumed it was Phil, so I turned around.

"Hey Phi-", I began to say, but there was no one there. I just shrugged.

"Ah I've got it right here", he said as he handed me my wallet, "Oh, um, can I help you, madam?"

"Who...who are you talking to?", I asked.

"Her", he said, pointing behind me.

I turned around and standing there was a girl. She looked like she was about my age and she was about my height. She was wearing black pants and a black hoodie zipped all the way up with the hood nearly covering here eyes. I couldn't see her face clearly as she was wearing a huge pair of sunglasses.

"I don't need any help. Not from you", she said in a dark tone as she pulled out a gun.

"Woah woah woah. I don't want any trouble", the pharmacist said as he stuck up his hands.

"That's what they all say", the girl said. Somehow, I felt like I recognized her voice.

"Ange-", I began to say.

"Don't say it or I'll kill you right here, right now", she warned.

"I think it's time fro you to leave, madam", the pharmacist said.

"And I think it's time for you to die", she said just before she shot him and he fell to the ground.

"Why did you do that?!", I yelled.

"The things I do need no explanation. Just like this needs no explanation", she said to me in a sadistic tone of voice.

I don't remember exactly what happened next, but I remember a cloth being placed over my mouth seconds before I went unconscious.

Phil's POV

I was still at Starbucks waiting for Avery when I started to get nervous.

"She still hasn't come back yet. I hope she's alright", I thought to myself.

"Maybe I should call her", I thought.

So I took out my phone and dialed Avery's number.

Ring...

Ring...

 No answer.

"Maybe I should just go over there myself", I thought.

So I walked over to the pharmacy and when I got there, no one was in there and the door was ajar.

"Hello? Avery? Is anyone here?", I called.

No one answered, but I heard a faint little noise coming from behind the counter. So I walked behind the counter and I found a man laying in a pool of blood. He was very pale and barely breathing. I assumed he was the pharmacist.

"Did a girl with brown hair and brown eyes come in here recently?", I asked in a panic.

All he did was nod because he was too weak to speak.

"What was her name?", I asked.

"A...ave...", he tried to say.

"That's good enough. Where did she go? Did somebody take her? Where did they take her? Who took her?", I said all in one breath.

"An...Ange...", he managed to say.

"That's enough for me. Thank you", I said as I burst out the door.

I took a taxi back to the inn where we were staying. I called an ambulance and told them that the pharmacist was close to death and he needed immediate medical attention.

When I got back to the inn, I walked as slow as I could back to my room. I didn't want to face Dan. Not like this.

I slowly opened the door to find Dan laying in bed watching TV.

"Oh hello Phil. I was wondering where you were. What took you so long?", Dan said.

I didn't answer. I couldn't. I just looked at the ground, avoiding eye contact.

"Where's Avery?", Dan asked slowly.

Again, I didn't answer. I just let my eyes fill with tears.

"Was...was it her?", he asked. I just nodded.

Dan didn't respond. At least not in words. Out of anger, he took the glass of water he was drinking and threw it against the wall as he yelled at the top of his lungs.
