29. Dying

Chapter 26

Avery's POV

"What is it Avery?", Louise asked worriedly.

"It's Dan", I said with tears in my eyes.

Phil had told me over the phone that the hospital had called him and gave him an update on Dan's condition. He wasn't doing well. His heart was becoming weaker by the minute and his breathing was getting slower.

Louise and I got in a cab and told the driver to go straight to the hospital. We couldn't waste any time. But of course, we got stuck in a traffic jam on the way to the hospital. I said a silent prayer for Dan that he would at least hold on until Louise and I arrived.

When we got to the hospital, I immediately went to the front desk and asked:

"We're here for Dan Howell. Where is he?"

But the person at the front desk didn't seem to speak English.

Then a nurse walked up to us and said, "I speak English. How can I help you?"

"We're here for Dan Howell, but I don't remember where his room is", I said.

"Ah yes. If you'll just follow me this way, I'll take you to him", the doctor said.

The hallways that led us to Dan's room seemed even longer this time. There seemed to be even more lefts and rights. The walls looked even more depressing and sad.

When we finally reached Dan's room, I didn't want to open the door. I knew how he was doing. I knew what he was going through at the moment. I knew he was...dying.

Louise ended up opening the door and I saw the lifeless and colorless human that was Dan. His face was pale and he was having trouble breathing. The doctors were shouting a million things at each other.

"This man needs more oxygen!"

"He's having more trouble breathing!"

"His beats per minute are going down!"

"No, he can't die", I thought to myself, "Not now".

Phil was in the chair by Dan's bedside crying his eyes out. There was nothing he could do to help Dan and he knew it.

"Who are you?", a doctor asked me.

"Oh I''m his fiance", I said as I pointed at Dan.

"I'm sorry, but he's not doing well as you can see", the doctor said.

"Yes I can see that", I said.

"The bullet skimmed his heart and he suffered trauma as well", said the doctor.

"Do you you think that I could...just in case he doesn't make it, can I hug him one last time?", I said with tears in my eyes. I didn't even want to think about Dan dying.

"Of course, miss", the doctor said.

I walked over to the side of Dan's hospital bed as the doctor told the others to move aside.

"But sir, he's dying", one doctor said.

"So will she if she doesn't get to hug him one last time, so leave", Phil said.

"You heard him, now out", the doctor said.

Everyone left the room and let me talk to Dan privately. Even without color in his face, he was still the love of my life. No, he couldn't die.

I moved closer to his faced and whispered, "Hello, love. I know you can't hear me, but that's okay. I just need to talk to you one last time just in case...just in case you don't make it".

At this point, I wasn't even trying to hold back the tears.

"Dan, I love you. I love you so much. Please. Please don't go. Please don't leave me. I love you", I sobbed and I wrapped my arms tightly around him.

At that exact moment, I felt an arm wrap around me.

"Y-you didn't...think I'd be that soon did you?", Dan struggled to say.

Dan's POV

It was very hard to breathe and I was feeling the weakest I've ever felt in my life. But no. I couldn't die. Not yet. I couldn't leave my fans. My family. Phil. I couldn't leave Avery.

I felt Avery wrap her arms tightly around me.

"Dan, I love you. I love you so much. Please. Please don't go. Please don't leave me. I love you", she sobbed.

I gathered up all of the strength I had in my body, which wasn't much, to put my arm around her and say, "Y-you didn't...think I'd be that soon did you?"

Avery didn't say anything. She just looked at me with wide eyes that were filled with tears.

" okay?", I managed to ask.

"I...just...can't believe...Dan are you really awake?", she asked.

"I...think...I think I am", I smiled.

"I can't...I'm so happy you're alive", Avery cried as she wrapped her arms around me once again.

"Y-yes...but still weak...", I said.

"Oh yes. I'm so sorry", she said as she let go, "Doctors! He's awake!"

About six or seven doctors rushed into the room.

"You're a fighter, son. We didn't think you were going to make it", a doctor said to me.

"How are you feeling? Do you need anything?", another doctor asked.

"F-fine...just...i need...air", I said weakly.

"Right. Oxygen. We need oxygen", a doctor said.

Avery's POV

"Right. Oxygen. We need oxygen", a doctor said.

"Dan, I'm so happy you're alive", Phil said as tears were still streaming down his face.

"I missed you", Louise said.

"I missed you too. All three of you", Dan said before the doctors put the oxygen mask on his face.

"Excuse me, but can I talk to you two outside?", the head doctor asked Phil and I.

We walked outside of the room and I said, "What is it, sir?"

"Mr. Howell is still very weak, but we now know that he is going to live. We clearly can't release him yet and he will be very closely monitored. But I can assure you that you don't have anything to worry about", he said.

"So he's going to be okay?", I asked.

"Yes, he is going to be okay. What I suggest that you all do is go home and get some rest. We will take care of him", the doctor said.

"Thank you. Thank you so much", I said.

Phil and I got in a cab and were heading home. Finally. I could finally breathe. I could finally relax. I could finally smile knowing now that the love of my life, Dan Howell, was going to live.
