Chapter 13

"Back"

Dan's POV

I had gotten myself into sort of a cycle. Every day, I would wake up before Avery and  go visit Phil at the hospital before Avery got up. Sometimes, around 1:30, Avery, and sometimes Rachel, would come to visit Phil as well. Then they'd leave around 2:45. I'd stay with Phil until I was having trouble keeping my eyes open due to how tired I was. Then I'd go home and Avery woukd already be asleep. The next day, I'd go and do it all over again.

I felt like Hazel Grace from The Fault In Our Stars near the end of Gus's life.

Today, Phil didn't seem like he was doing any better than he was before. He just lay there, his chest continuing to rise and fall. The doctors kept telling me, "He should be waking up soon", but he hadn't woken up. I tried talking to him a bit more, but it was no use.

Then, Avery came to visit. This time without Rachel.

"Hey, Dan. How're you feeling?", Avery asked.

"As good as I can feel while my best friend is in a coma", I said weakly, "Where's Rachel?"

"Not feeling well. She told me to tell you and Phil hi for her", Avery said.

"Oh...um...thanks", I said.

"Yeah. Hey Dan, why don't we go do something to get your mind off of all this?", Avery asked.

"mm...I don't know...", I said, trailing off at the end.

"No. we need to go. Come on", Avery said as she pulled my arm gently.

I reluctantly went with Avery. We didn't know where we were going, so we just started walking.

"So...um...what are we going to do?", I asked.

"Well I hadn't really thought about it, but let's go to the cinema". Avery said.

Avery and I walked to the cinema and there was actually a showing of The Hunger Games playing in half an hour, so we decided to buy tickets for that.

We were about halfway through the movie when I began to lose focus. I stopped paying attention to the movie and I started spacing out. All I could think about was Phil. I wondered if he'd woken up yet.

When Katniss was mourning Rue's death in the movie, I nearly lost it. I couldn't imagine losing a close friend like that. What made it worse was that my best friend was on the verge of dying. I let a few tears fall down my face.

"Dan, you okay?", Avery whispered.

"What do you think?", I whispered back.

"Want to go back?", she asked. I nodded.

So Avery and I left the cinema and made our way back to the hospital.

When we got there, the people at the front desk told us that we couldn't go back and see Phil.

"And why not?", I asked.

"Something's happened to him. We're not sure what happened exactly, but we're looking into it", the lady said.

"No. No that's not enough you can't just-", I began.

"I'm sorry, but you can't see him right now. We will keep you updated. In the meantime, please wait in the waiting room", she said.

So Avery and I went and sait in the waiting room, Thankfully, again, there weren't that many people there. There was a father and his teenage daughter, an old man, a 20-something year old woman, an old lady, and a 40-something year old man.

"I feel like I've been here way too often recently", I said to Avery.

"Yeah same here", she said.

Then the typical "Waiting Room Routine" began. People came and left. Doctors came in, but none of them needed to talk to you. One doctor told the 20-something year old woman that her boyfriend would live, another doctor told the 40-something year old man that his wife was going to live, and the third doctor said that the old lady's husband had died.

Finally, after waiting for about an hour and a half, a doctor came in and said, "Friends of Phillip Michael Lester?"

"Yes yes that's us. Is he okay? How's he doing?", I said.

"Well...come with me", the doctor said.

The doctor then proceeded to lead us down a long hallway and through a couple pairs of double doors. We finally reached Phil's room. I opened the door and Phil looked exactly the same as when I left him. But there was a change in his skin color.

"Wh-what's going on with him?", I asked.

"Unfortunately, he didn't make it. I'm very sorry", The doctor said.

In that moment, it felt like my world was collapsing. I had just lost my best friend.

"Can...can we please be alone for a bit?", I asked shakily.

"Of course", the doctor said just before exiting the room.

I walked over to the side of the bed and sat down. Avery sat down next to me. I took Phil's hand and then Avery's.

"I can't believe you're gone Phil. I can't believe I lost you Phil. You weren't supposed to leave me", I cried as I left the tears stream down my face.

"I'm going to miss you Phil", I said as I squeezed his hand and Avery's.

Then I heard someone whimper in pain.

"Oh sorry, Avery. I didn't mean to squeeze your hand that hard", I said as I wiped the tears from my face.

"That wasn't me", Avery said.

At first I didn't believe her. I looked over at Phil just in time to see his eyes flicker open.

"You know I hate it when you squeeze my hand that hard", he said weakly.

Author's Note:

Omg chapter 13! I am honestly so proud of this chapter. Did you think Phil was going to live? I feel like so may people kill Phil off in their fanfictions and I didn't want to be stereotypical. Anyways I hope you liked this chapter :) Please fan, comment, like, and share :)
