I am not Broken, I am Broker

A thief, known as the 'Shadow Broker', steals for anyone. If you want anything, anything in the world, all you have to do is talk to him. If you want books, expensive jewelry, money, valuable house hold items, even knives, swords, guns. He gains people's trust, if he believes they won't tell the police about his organization. In exchange for these items that he steals, he gets half the money that they earn if they sell these items. One day, against all odds, he becomes friends with a "customer". Whenever this customer wants Broker to steal from a mansion, everything turns out for the worst.

17. The Price Of Life

Sneaking out was a dumb idea, there were no clues of anyone or anything. The tiny light that emitted from my lighter, shined in the darkness of the forest. Rustling through leaves, and branches were suddenly heard. As expected, I turned around fast to see what the noise was behind me. Lo and behold, it was somebody wearing a very long red flowing robe. "Who are you?" I asked this mysterious figure. This persons face remained a mystery, I couldn't even see their arms or legs, red was covering them everywhere. "I'll ask again, who are you..and why are you trespassing my property?" An arm of theirs raised slightly, placing a finger up to their lips. "Shh..my name is Whisper. After I am gone, do not speak of my name. You must be the one that I have been searching for, quite a while now." I was confused and my heart was racing. This voice sounded cold, and vengeful. A sudden force pushed against my chest, and I noticed that Whisper forced an envelope against my long coat. "Read it when you are alone. Goodbye." Everything was confusing about this meeting. Who is Whisper? What does this envelope hold? So that's what the red color was in the forest. "Why do I have to read it when I'm alo-.." Raising my head, to face Whisper again, I realized that he was gone. "Never mind then.." Something scared me about opening this envelope. "Well..nobody is around right now..so it would be a good time to open this." To make sure that I could see, I held the lighter near the envelope as I ripped it open. A red piece of paper, with white lettering. I began to read it to myself.

"If you are reading this, then this is bad news. You have done something very wrong to our gang leader, and we will find you. We have sent out a member of our group, but have found no evidence of you residing anywhere that Whisper has searched. How do we know about you? Well, dumb idea of yours. You made a mistake by leaving your little device on David's table. You know? The one that killed your precious friend? Ha! Anyways, we know your name, your family, the remaining ones living, and what you have done. This device has hacked your information when you made the mistake of going into our mansion. We will kill your entire family, maybe Purple first. You have a bounty to make up for, one million dollars. If you are such a thief, then you will have to steal something of great value, and then sell it for a high price. To avoid the deaths of your loved ones, even your son. (Which would be hilarious, by the way). You will have to pay us the million dollars, so that we can feel at least a little better in grieving over our friend. Who knows, even after you collected the money, we still might kill them."

- Sincerely, your worst nightmare.

My hand began to shake, holding the lighter. The flame almost slipped out of my hand and dropped onto the ground, which I somehow avoided. I have not thieved in four years, I may not be good anymore. It was hard to believe that a walk outside in the night, would lead me to reading a letter about everyone I love dying. Impossible to not scream in the forest, I let out a loud frustrated cry. "DAMN IT! THESE IDIOTS! AHHH!!!" I threw the letter onto the ground and repeatedly stomped on this stupid piece of paper that made me so angry. Who knew that letters on paper could break a person down so much. "WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT LOSING MY SON!!!! ABOUT LOSING MY FAMILY!?" I gripped my hair out of frustration. "YOU ARE NOT GOING TO FIND MY FAMILY, IF I FIND YOU MORONS FIRST!" My heart skipped from my anger, and stress. Leaning down, I picked up the crumpled letter. How am I going to get one million damn dollars? The paper was rubbing against my right side in my coat pocket, as I walked back home. That idiot named Whisper told me not to tell any of my family about him. I have no other choice, this is something that can't be kept a secret from them.

It took about ten minutes to get back to the wooden door of our hideout. Sighing, I let myself in and heard snores coming from Seven's bedroom. Everyone was still asleep, and had no idea that the price of their life, is at stake of one million right now. My exhaustion got the best of me, so my back hit against the wall of the living room. "Dad?" I jumped up bad as hell. Purple startled me and I turned away very fast to hide my distress. "What are you doing dressed and awake?" He was curious and thought it was suspicious. My mind was empty and I couldn't talk to him or explain why I was panicky. "I just.." Lying has always been impossible for me. "I was checking around the area of the forest..I..I." Purple knew something was wrong with me and put his hand on my shoulder. "You alright? Anyone around?" His eyes filled with concerned. The note was still in my pocket, so I grabbed it and showed it to him. Purple was as shocked as I was. "Yeah..so..I guess I have to thieve soon. I have to tell the rest tomorrow." I told him. Purple was scared for me, because it has been a while. He must have adjusted to life without us going on missions. "So they want to kill everyone..especially me." He sat on the couch and showed no sign of fear about the fact that there were gangs out there to kill them. A laugh somewhat escaped Purple's lips. "I hope they come after me first." His voice sounded shaky from anger and he bit his lip. "I will show them how Lunar taught me how to kill without being heard.." I was shocked at how he talked. "What are you talking about? You can't fight against them! There are probably too many." I scolded Purple. "Look, if I need to kill someone that's about to kill me, would you rather me do it? Aren't you the one that raised me to be brave? That's why I'm not scared. I'm shocked, but not scared for me." That's the son I raised right there. "Wow..uhm..okay. I know that I raised you to be brave but I'm still your protector, alright?" It was natural for me to feel that way, even though Purple is twenty years old. "You can help watch out for me, but it's my job to protect my life if need be. I'm just glad that you didn't lie to cover up the fact you walked outside to night." He was right, but I'm still going to need this money to pay this group of assholes. "Just get sleep again, tomorrow we'll tell Seven, and Lunar. I'm going to stay up tonight, just too much is bothering me." Purple looked up at me and pat the space beside him on the couch. "I'm not gonna sleep either, I'll just sleep tomorrow night. Wanna play some games with me?" He switched on the TV and I sat beside him. "Sure..maybe it'll help us relax." The sound of the video game menu soon loaded, and we spent the rest of the night, trying to forget about tomorrow.
