I am not Broken, I am Broker

A thief, known as the 'Shadow Broker', steals for anyone. If you want anything, anything in the world, all you have to do is talk to him. If you want books, expensive jewelry, money, valuable house hold items, even knives, swords, guns. He gains people's trust, if he believes they won't tell the police about his organization. In exchange for these items that he steals, he gets half the money that they earn if they sell these items. One day, against all odds, he becomes friends with a "customer". Whenever this customer wants Broker to steal from a mansion, everything turns out for the worst.

5. The Mansion

Today is the day, my group and I venture out to see the mansion at the request of Lunar. "What if we get to this so called mansion, but it's a tiny shed instead." Seven joked as we all walked with Lunar showing us the way. I turned to him and told him to keep his voice down. "Keep my voice down? Pft.." Seven sarcastically said as he took a sip from his soda. I didn't like how he mocked the poor kid, hell, Lunar is homeless and I'm going to try and find some real gold in this mansion. Purple was quiet as always and looked down as he walked with the rest of us. Ashes was walking beside me like he usually does. He may be my best friend, but Ashes has a separation anxiety when it comes to me. When I have to break into a house, or a mansion, he makes me take a device that allows our entire group to communicate. "How long is this walk?" Ashes asked Lunar. "We're almost there." The kid looked back as he reassured us. We soon arrived at this rich neighborhood, and we all stood in shock at how huge the houses were. "So which one is it?" Ashes asked. "The third one. I know it's pretty huge but.." Huge is an understatement, this mansion looked more like a castle. I cleared my throat out of nervousness. "Damn, you picked a huge place for me, man." I pat Lunar on the back and noticed my friends looked at me weird. I moved my hand away quickly once they noticed my friendly gesture. "Yeah but like you said, you'll get the job done..right?" Lunar asked me. "Of course, we always do." I eyed the black gate surrounding the huge property. "Seven, you investigate to see if there are any cameras on the outside of this place tonight, and if there are..then eliminate them. Got it?" I ordered him. "Duh..that's what my job is right?" There was a rich kid that appeared suddenly, walking to his home. "Who are you guys? You all look like a bunch of poor morons." The kid looked at Lunar up and down and then he laughed. That pissed me off very badly, but I didn't want to raise suspicion. Little rich snobby kid finally walked away from all of us and I rolled my eyes in annoyance. "No wonder I steal from brats like that." I said in a pissed off voice. The others could tell I was annoyed whenever the rich little snob made his comments toward Lunar. Everyone else ignored that immature teen, but I didn't. I tend to have a hard time having a filter. Ashes looked more concerned as if he was thinking about something while looking at the mansion. "Take the communication device whenever you go inside of this place." He said in a concerning voice. I felt a hand slide inside of my huge coat pocket. It was Ashes putting the device in my pocket. "Man, you know I'll be alright, stop worrying so much." I looked away and then back at Lunar. "If you find some good music on the radio inside of that place, then play it over the device." Seven commented and laughed. "I could use some good heavy rock music, I keep listening to the same stuff lately." This guy was never serious, but I still consider him a friend. "You always make jokes." I said to him. Lunar looked confused at what we were talking about. "Communication device? What's that?" He asked. "Oh..it's a tiny screen that we use to see each other while I'm breaking in. We can also hear each other and they can give me advice." Lunar looked amazed whenever I showed him the tiny device. It had a blue screen, and whenever its switched on, the screen turns grey. "Purple, take your device out and show him a demonstration of it." Purple then got out his own device and turned his on. "Now point the device to your face." His face showed up on my screen in a purple tint. "It has four separate screens. Seven is on the top left, Ashes is in the top right, Purple is the bottom left, and I am the bottom right." Lunar loved our technology, and held the little device in his hand whenever I gave him permission to hold it. "Wow..I've never seen anything like that before. I wish I had one." Was he hinting at wishing that he was joined in our group? No..that can't be possible. No one has ever wanted to join us before, and if they do, then we have to seriously know them well. "Well it does come in handy all the time, but it's for our group only." I had to be strict, in case Lunar sounded a little bit threatening. "Oh..I understand." I felt bad when he looked down. "Yeah, so..Seven will investigate this tonight, and find a way inside of this gate. He will also look to see if it needs a key, and if it does then he will pick pocket everyone in this neighborhood, in case." Seven zipped up his green hoodie. "You just heard a biography about me, kid. Broker did a boring job describing me though." Seven smiled and yawned. "So Seven does stuff with the cameras and pick pocketing?" Lunar asked. "Yeah, but I'm good at lock picking. It's required of me, since I'm the one that breaks in." Lunar nodded and then looked at Purple. Purple was holding his phone, typing. We all knew that he wasn't really texting anybody. Purple acted like he was texting, so he can avoid conversations with other people, like customers.

I heard a noise suddenly. It was obviously Lunar's stomach growling. A sudden urge came over me. I wanted to invite Lunar back to our hide out, for some food that our group cooks every night. Knowing that it'll be weird to seem friendly to a customer, I avoided asking him. "You hungry kiddo?" I asked Lunar. "A little bit. Why?" He was confused and then looked as if he was going to laugh. I'm guessing he was thinking of how I used that sleep dart in the middle of a restaurant. "Just wondering. I heard a loud growl coming from one of you guys." Lunar looked down as if he felt that I didn't care if he was hungry. "Oh..that makes sense." After looking at the mansion for about an hour, we decided that tonight would be the night we send Seven out. "Well I think it's time we go back to our hide out. I don't want anyone seeing us stand around here for too long. It will raise concerns." I told everyone. Ashes looked at Purple and Seven. "I agree with Broker..so let's go." He got closer to Lunar and nodded. "Thanks for your time. I'm sure Broker will do a good job." Ashes commented to Lunar, and he then walked away. Everyone in our group seems to avoid actual conversation with our customers. I tend to be the one explaining, and showing people, and then giving them good conversation. I mean, does it really hurt to try and make someone feel like they're listened to? Purple and Seven then followed Ashes. "You gonna come back with us?" Ashes stopped and turned around to ask me. "Yeah I'll be there soon. I'm just going to ask Lunar a few more questions." Ashes, Seven, and Purple turned around again and continued walking back to our hide out. "Now that they're not around, do you want some food later?" Lunar started laughing. "Now, now, Broker..you know you can't shoot everyone in this city with sleep darts and steal everyone's burgers or hot dogs." I shook my head in disagreement. "That's not what I meant. My friends and I cook every night at our place. Maybe you can come there secretly." Lunar looked distrusting of this idea. "I mean..I don't know..they might see me." I rolled my eyes and sighed. "Nine o'clock." I gave him a note of the time I mentioned, so he can remember. I didn't give him time to answer, so I pushed the note against his chest before he could decline. Before I knew it, it was nine o'clock and everyone was asleep. I got up from my bed and opened the fridge. There was left over spaghetti. The best kind that anyone can have, because we steal the best high priced ingredients. Placing some left overs in a bowl, I heated up the food. Before the microwave sounded off, I stopped it one second before. Stopping a microwave is like defusing a bomb.

For some odd reason I felt adrenaline whenever I stopped the microwave at only one second remaining, because it would have woken everybody up. I made my way outside of the front door and then heard the sound of a crunchy leaf being stepped on. "Oh shit!" Lunar exclaimed as he jumped up very badly. "O..oh..it's you..Broker." I have to admit, I wanted to laugh my ass off at him jumping, but I'm much more mature than that. "You actually listened to me?" I asked him. "Yeah..I'm starving very badly." I had to hold the bowl with my black hoodie. The bowl was very hot from the microwave. I wasn't about to give this poor kid cold food. "For a criminal..you sure are nice." He thanked me as I handed over the bowl of hot spaghetti to him. I couldn't believe my eyes whenever he ate the spaghetti like it was normal, and not scolding hot at all. "Lunar slow down, how does that not burn?" There was water in his eyes from the heat apparently. "I LOVE burning my tongue on purpose as I eat..It feels rather good." I never met anyone else that does that. "Okay..then. That's pretty weird, and you call US weird?" I joked with him and he laughed as well. "Thank you again for the food. You're the reason I'm able to eat once a day at least lately." I felt proud of myself after he told me that. "No problem, I like to help out. How does it taste?" He was done with the food very quickly. "It was amazing. Thank you Broker." I smiled and took the bowl back from him. "Any time. I'm glad you liked it. I'm the one that cooked it." We sat outside talking for about another hour afterwards. "You should go now, before everyone wakes up tomorrow and thinks you're some threat to us because they assume that you are hanging around the hide out for spying purposes." Lunar nodded and then slowly stood up. "I'll see you again in a couple of days." I told him. "Alright..it was fun talking to ya." Lunar said as he started to make his way out of the forest. I shut the front door of the hideout again, and made sure everyone was still asleep. Everyone was asleep, so I made my way back to my own bed. As I was in bed, I stared at the ceiling and thought of the mansion we saw earlier today. It was a silver, and white colored mansion. It had red ribbons blowing in the wind that were attached to front porch. The black gate surrounding it had golden key holes, and golden horse heads on each side of the gate. This place looked well kept up, and I had to worry about someone being there everyday. I sighed and rolled over on my side and soon fell asleep.
