I am not Broken, I am Broker

A thief, known as the 'Shadow Broker', steals for anyone. If you want anything, anything in the world, all you have to do is talk to him. If you want books, expensive jewelry, money, valuable house hold items, even knives, swords, guns. He gains people's trust, if he believes they won't tell the police about his organization. In exchange for these items that he steals, he gets half the money that they earn if they sell these items. One day, against all odds, he becomes friends with a "customer". Whenever this customer wants Broker to steal from a mansion, everything turns out for the worst.

7. Second Thoughts

The sound of Seven groaning from pain made me feel terrible. I was proud of him for getting the job done, though. It was almost impossible to not feel like it was my fault that he got injured. I walked back inside of our hideout, and noticed the kitchen was absent of Ashes and Seven's presence. I called out for them. "Where are you guys?" Ashes raised his voice whenever I asked. "I moved Seven to his room. I'm bandaging him up and making sure he gets rest." I heard Ashes voice down the hallway that connects to the kitchen. I went into Seven's room, and saw Ashes wrapping the white bandages around Seven's arms and legs. "So you decided not to go after them huh?" Ashes asked. I sighed and watched Seven close his eyes from being exhausted. Who knows? He could have a trauma from this event. "Knowing my younger self, I would have jumped right to it. But, I'm not my old self anymore." Memories began running through my head like a victim running from their killer. Ashes was done wrapping the bandages around Seven's arm and then walked toward me and shut the door to Sevens bedroom. "Yeah..we both know how you used to be. Glad you changed for the better." Ashes told me and I began day dreaming of the past. When I was Seventeen, I was charged for attempted murder, and grand theft auto. The person that I attempted to murder, hurt Purple by verbally bullying him. Anything and everything used to piss me off. But now? I'm a more calm nature person. Ashes dropped a big pack of bandages on the floor, which jumped me back to reality. "Anyway..tomorrow is the day that I do the job." I told Ashes whenever I shook the day dreams off. "Be careful..don't forget your communication device. Wake us all up before you leave." The sound of Ashes voice was worried as always. He's always been a big worrier. "I'll be alright. I just need to take a different route than where those gangs live. I'll have to remap another route for us all to follow so that Purple won't be at risk of danger as well. I may tell Lunar too whenever I see him." The thought of Purple going out there scares me. He may love to walk around at times, but I'm always following him to make sure that he's okay. He has no idea that I even do that, because of how quiet I am while in sneak mode. We both began walking into the kitchen and into the living room, where we sat on the dusty red and black couch. "That's a great idea..that way we wont run into any sort of danger again." Ashes complimented me.

Purple walked into the living room where Ashes and I were sitting. "Now that everything is calmed down..what happened to Seven?" He asked us both. "An ambush. A gang of morons thought that he was from the rich neighborhood, and attacked him for his money. Luckily he didn't have his golden coin or golden necklace that he takes with him everywhere he goes." Purple was surprised that Seven left without his favorite stolen items. "Why didn't he?" I looked over at the jewelry sitting on the kitchen counter. "Because I took them from him whenever he was going to the rich neighborhood. I had this feeling that something was going to happen, and sure enough it did." Purple gave me a surprised look. "Damn..I can't believe that you basically foretold the futu-" I jumped up whenever he cussed. "Don't use that language." I said in a strict tone, and he backed up like a puppy being scolded. "Dad, I'm sixteen..I can say whatever I want. It's not like I'm a three year old cursing. Don't cut me off while I'm talking. Seven cusses all the time basically." He rolled his eyes at me and I felt stressed at his attitude. "Sorry I cut you off but just don't next time. Alright?" He went to the fridge to get his late night snack as always and promised me that he wouldn't do it again. His late night food of choice tonight was macaroni, but that was like every single other night. Literally. "Macaroni again?" I laughed and thought it was somewhat cute to be honest. I wonder if he got it from me. "Yeah, so?" He began stirring the butter into the mixture of noodles and boiling water. We all heard a sudden knock on the hideout door. Remembering that Seven got attacked, we all walked slowly to the door and I switched off the light in the kitchen so that the person on the outside can't tell that we're in here. I got closer and looked out the window while crouching. It was Lunar. "It's safe..it's Lunar out there. Not sure what he wants though." The lights were flipped back on and Purple continued cooking. I opened the door and greeted Lunar. "Did Seven get rid of the cameras?" Lunar asked. "Yeah..he did." I was more quiet than usual and he noticed that. "What's wrong?" I looked down and shut the door even further. "Seven got attacked by a gang. He's having to rest..according to him he was almost killed." Lunar looked in shock and gasped. The same reaction I had when I first saw Seven run in wounded and bloody. "Are you kidding me? Why don't you guys have an assassin in your group? Someone that can kill the dangerous people that are a threat to you all?" The words Lunar were saying made me think. What if we did have an assassin? Maybe it would lower the chances of us being attacked again. "Assassin? I don't really believe in killing people though." Lunar leaned in and whispered as if someone were listening. "What if they knew how to get rid of evidence so they would never be found after killing?" The idea of it was very interesting and he made it sound as if he wanted to join the group and become our assassin. "What are you hinting at?" I wondered if that's exactly what he meant. "I mean..maybe.." He stopped talking and looked at his frail arms. "Never mind." The way he looked at his arms made it seem like he was doubting himself. Like he thought that he was too weak to become an assassin. "I know what you mean. You wanna join our group, huh?" I had no idea how this would fly with the others and if they would like it at all. It has been nothing but the four of us our whole lives. Lunar tried to change the subject very fast. "Um..I smell food..were you cooking just now?" His stomach growled and I allowed the subject to be changed. "Purple was cooking macaroni." I told him. He rubbed his hand across his mouth and instantly began to salivate. "You're hungry? Maybe I can get some from Purple." He looked very happy and I then walked inside of the hideout again. The food was done and there were four bowls of macaroni. Each bowl was for one of us. I didn't mind going hungry tonight, though. Lunar has probably gone all day without food anyway. I arrived back to Lunar and gave him the bowl and he ate the entire bowl in less than a couple of minutes. "Don't think that I forgot the conversation earlier. I just agreed to change the subject this time. Answer me next time." I told Lunar. He looked nervous and picked at his sleeve. Then a slight stutter escaped his lips, and he struggled to speak up. "Well..maybe I did think of joining but I know you forbid it." We do forbid people from joining, but maybe if we knew him for a few years, then he can join. I'm not sure if that would be good for our group, considering we have all we need. "Might not be a problem some day." Lunar scratched the side of his face and looked away whenever I said that. "Tomorrow I go into the mansion. You can't watch what I do though. Only Purple, Seven, and Ashes are allowed to watch me on their device." Lunar looked disappointed. Maybe he wanted to see how I do stuff. How I thieve, and how I can lock pick. We never allowed a customer to watch me though, in fear of them stealing my techniques and using them against us and stealing everything in our place. "Sorry..but it's just I have to follow my own rules. I can't go against them." He understood whenever I told him that. "I understand..that makes sense. Anyway..stay safe at the mansion tomorrow. I heard some weird stuff about that place. But it's nothing that can kill you." What Lunar said made my stomach feel strange. In a bad way. The last time a customer said that to me was whenever I almost got caught by the police. I hid my nervousness by responding positively. "Don't worry, I have been through at least roughly forty houses or properties in my life. I've never been caught or killed." I smiled and began having second thoughts on if this place is dangerous or not. I wondered if I should give him a chance to pick another house instead. "Just try to be careful..I heard that the person living there interacts very strangely toward other people." Lunar informed me. I was kinda intimidated about the kind of people living there. "Like I said, I'll be fine. I just need a lot of sleep so I have enough energy to focus on what I'm doing." We soon exchanged our goodbyes.

After Lunar left, I went inside of the hideout again and saw Ashes sitting there. "What did he want? That was a pretty long conversation." I yawned from my exhaustion. "He just wanted to see if Seven did the job successfully." I didn't tell Ashes about the other part of the conversation. "For that long? Why has he been coming here so much?" Ashes asked. I don't know what to say to him about that, because I was beginning to wonder that myself. Maybe he sees me as a friend as well now, but I wasn't going to tell Ashes that. "He's a customer. Remember? If they have questions..then they visit us about any and everything. Stop interrogating me about it. He just was curious about Seven." Ashes slowly uncrossed his legs that were sitting propped up onto the wooden kitchen table. "Does he know that Seven got hurt?" He asked. Why did he want to know if Lunar knew? I don't see how it can be threatening if Lunar knew. "Yeah, I told him about it. I don't see the big deal in telling him." Ashes took a deep breath. "Well what if he WAS a threat. He would think we're weak and vulnerable." I snapped at Ashes. "Stop being so paranoid! No wonder Purple has a hard time trusting people. Yeah, I get it. We are a group of freaking thieves that have to be careful because of the cops. But that doesn't mean that everyone will tell the cops, now is it? Purple learned the anxious and paranoid behavior!" Ashes looked pissed off and glared at me and stood up from the chair he was sitting in. "Broker, don't snap at me like that again. Don't yell at me, don't even get that kind of tone with me anymore. You are lucky that I'm still even in this place." He walked off and I watched him storm down the hallway, and into his room. I felt guilty and stuff didn't seem right between me and my best friend anymore after the small argument. I basically did the one pet peeve that Ashes hates. Ashes hates to be blamed for other people's problems. I happened to blame him for the fact Purple has trust issues. Nothing is worse than doing the one thing that somebody you're close to, hates. How could I be such an idiot and forget that he hates when people say that to him? Ugh! I sighed and then walked to Ashes bedroom. He was lying there and rolled his eyes when I appeared. "Don't hold a grudge against me. Stop rolling your eyes too." I was being mature in the situation. "I'm sorry. Sorry I blamed you. Its up to you whenever you forgive me." I walked away and into my own bedroom, and prepared to go to sleep. As I was lying there, I noticed that I forgot to tell Lunar about the rerouting that I had planned. I leaned up suddenly in bed and began to worry about his safety. I worried if he was going to run into gangs, or not. Looking out the window of my bedroom I could see nothing but fog, and I could only hope for the best.
