Friends Forever

Amber's best friend is Luke Hemmings from down the street. They have been super close since they can remember. She's going to make sure that his dreams come true. Even with some rough patches here and there.

3. Back to School

*The Next Morning*
I wake up still on Luke's chest, and warm with the blanket still wrapped around us. It’s kind of nice, to be able to be this close to someone. To know they enjoy it just as much.
I slowly open my eyes and look up at Luke. He's still asleep with his mouth barely open and a very quiet snore escaping his lips.
"You are a bastard, Lucas," I smile. "But I wouldn't trade you for any other dork out there."
After a minute or so I decide to try and get up to get some breakfast. I'm almost there before I get caught in the blanket and fall onto the floor.
"Ouch," I sit on my butt and rub my knees.
"Amber," Luke mumbles.
"Oh crap, I didn't mean to wake you up," I turn to look at him.
He has a small smile on his lips and his eyes are open and looking tired. "It’s alright. I like to see you right when you wake up."
I roll my eyes, "What's for breakfast?"
"What do you want?"
"Um, can we make waffles?" I smile.
"Sure. I mean, we can try," he laughs.
I pop up and Luke slowly gets up. Then we make our way to the kitchen. Quickly getting to work on making waffles.
Of course, we make a huge mess. But the waffles come out and are actually really good.
"Who would have thought Lucas could make something as delicious as these," I smile as I stuff more waffle into my mouth.
"You helped a lot," Luke smiles. "So you can take credit."
"Good. Because I was going to anyways. Say, can we do something again today?"
"Like what?"
"I don't know. But now that I'm free from my parents, I want to do stuff."
"How about we chill and you draw a little."
"Fine. That sounds nice to. Can we snack too?"
"And watch TV? Sure."
"This is why you're my best friend."
We finish eating before cleaning the kitchen up. Luke's parents are already at work, so we've got the house to ourselves.
It’s nice to just relax and do whatever with Luke. I don't have to worry about anything.
"Go get your guitar," I say hours later.
"Why?" Luke asks.
"Are you kidding me? So you can sing to me."
"Oh, all right. Hold on," he stands up and rushes off. He comes back moments later hold his guitar. "What do you want me to sing?" He carefully sits down on the floor.
"Anything. Everything."
"You irritate me sometimes, ya know?"
"But you still like me. Right?"
He laughs, "Of course."
The rest of the day flies by. Luke's parents come back home, and we are joined by his brothers for dinner. They make me feel so at home. I really am a part of the family.
The day comes to an end and I really wish it hadn't. School starts back up tomorrow. And I really don't want to go. To face anyone and do work. It would be cool to see Michael and Calum again though. They seemed cool and maybe I should make more friends.
"Goodnight Amber, I'll see you in the morning. Bright and early," he smiles as he walks to the door of my room.
"Goodnight Luke. I wish school wasn't tomorrow," I say. "But I'll wake up so I can see you're pretty face," I smile.
"Go to sleep," he laughs as he walks off.
"Dork," I roll my eyes. "I can't believe I'm still friends with you." Probably because you know too much about me and I can't let you go. And you pulled me back from the edge.
*The Next Day-Late Morning*
School. I liked to call it hell, but then my own home became that, so it’s called prison now.
"Hey Amber," a voice I haven't heard a lot fills my ears as I stand at my locker.
"Calum?" I ask and look at the boy standing next to me. "Ah, it is."
"Where's Luke?"
"Already in class. I forgot something," I look back in my locker and grab my book. "Do you need something?"
"I just wanted to apologize for Michael the other day. He got out of line. Hell, Luke and you could date if you wanted. Michael would still be an ass. He doesn't care for Luke too much. But I think he's cool. I'm trying to change his mind."
"He will come around," I close my locker. "Care to walk me to class, Calum?"
"Oh, sure."
We begin walking to my English class.
"Where do you have to go?" I ask.
"Close to your room. You're going to English right?"
"Yeah. So, you want to be friends with Luke. That would be cool. He's my best friend. As I think he told you when we met. It would he cool to have you as a friend as well."
"You seem really interesting, Amber," Calum smiles. "I think it would be cool to get to know you and Luke."
We stop at the entrance to my classroom.
"Well, maybe we can talk later. Because I like talking to you. You're a cool guy," I smile.
"You're a cool girl," Calum smiles back.
Then I turn and enter the room. Walking over to my seat right next to Luke.
"Get what you needed?" Luke asks.
"Yeah. And I got to talk to Calum. He's really nice," I answer.
"But he hangs with Michael who is an ass."
"He said he's working on that. You have to give people a chance Luke. Anything could be happening in his life that makes him do stupid things."
"Like you did that one time."
I roll my eyes, "Don't bring up the past. We are going to start looking into the future. Okay?"
"All right. Whatever you say."
The rest of the school day flies by. I actually see Calum again and we talk a little with Michael. Luke is by my side the whole time, and grips my upper arm. Michael and Luke don't like each other for some strange reason. I'll fix it one way or another.
Once I get home I head straight to my room to do homework. Then I fall asleep in my bed after eating a small snack.
I wake up to arms around me and a blanket on top of me.
I smile, knowing its Luke.
"I was gonna wake you up, but I couldn't because you looked too cute. Not that you don't always. Ugh, sleep well?"
"Yeah. I was really tired for some reason," I answer. "What did you need to wake me up for? Is it dinner time already?"
He chuckles, "No. I just needed help on some homework. I asked my mom, got it done, and then came back to you. I know how you hate being alone."
"So what time is it?"
"Almost dinner time. We can lie
here for a few more minutes."
"Okay," I smile. "I like this."
