4. Shattered

 Ekko's POV

Interestingly enough I felt brand new when I opened my eyes. I was on the floor, covered by a fluffy blanket. I recalled the events from the night before, how strange, such intense pain rippling through my body and my head was pounding. Weird. Painful. Lets not do that again.

I sat up to find my dog curled up on the floor beside me, sleeping. Dumb ass dog, I thought silently. Perhaps had he not chewed up my alarm clock I would have made it to school before I had that little episode. I half smiled. What a weird concept.

I stood up and went to my closet for something other than pajamas to wear. I grabbed a navy blue long sleeved shirt and light blue jeans. I slipped them on and styled my messy hair into a loose bun.

I went downstairs into the grocery store. Wait, isn't it my shift right now. I glanced around until I saw my mother working the register, like I was supposed to. I felt a pang of guilt. I was supposed to be working but I was passed out all day. I walked over to her. My mother made eye contact with me and she smiled. "I can take over now, mom." I say but she shakes her head.

She scans another item for a pudgy little old woman. "No dear, I'm fine. You just focus on getting better." Her voice is soft. I love her soft motherly voice, something I couldn't remember from the first five years of my life.

Just then I hear the click of heels and combat boots. I look towards the door. Esme and Alexis are walking towards me and a big smile invades my face. "What are you guys doing here?" I ask happily.

Esme places a hand on her hip and flips her dyed red hair over her shoulder dramatically. "No no no." she says, "The question is why weren't you at school, girly?" She's wearing a short hot pink dress and bright red heels, I ask no questions. Her eye shadow is gold and metallic, again, no questions.

Alexis puts her hands in her pocket. "We missed you." she says in her quiet voice. She's pretty but covers herself with black and ties her dark brown hair back. She rocks the whole no-makeup-just-dont-care look better than anyone I know. It's a true talent.

I smile at her. "It's a long story." I say to Esme.

She frowns, again, dramatically. She's such a thespian, even when she's not center stage. "Does it look like I have things to do?" before I can say yes, she says, "No, I don't, spill it."

I sigh in defeat. She's lovable in her own way but god she can test me sometimes. "Fine." I say and collect my thoughts, reflecting on what happened earlier. "I woke up and I collapsed on the floor in pain, incredible, like you would not believe kind of pain. My vision got blurry and my head was pounding and sound became painful." I chose to leave out the part about the eyes.

Alexis's eyebrows are furrowed and she looks concerned while Esme is picking at her cuticles, clearly not believing. Rage bubbles in me and my face flares up with heat. She glances up. "That's why you didn't go to school?" Her voices is full of sass. Normally that wouldn't bother me because with Esme that's the norm, but something in me snapped, and I mean it Shattered.

A growl ripples from the back of my throat. At this moment I want nothing more than to let her relive my experience. I reach out, fast and hard, and place both hands on either one of Esme's shoulders. She gasps with a 'how dare you' look. I close my eyes and I hear her collapse.

Alexis just stares at her. I open my eyes and stare too. Alexis glances up at me and her eyes widen. "Ekko!" She gasps. "Your eyes are glowing."

I don't flinch. That was weird, I thought, oh well. I continue to stare intently at Esme's body lying limply on the floor. Her eyes are closed but it's apparent that she's experiencing some degree of pain. When she opens her eyes she's gasping for breath. Her eyes search wildly trying to recognize where she is.

Esme locks eyes with me. Her wild stare tells me she's afraid. I shake my head and help her up. "It's okay." I say. What the hell happened. That was not normal to any kind of standards. Thank god we're behind a shelf so no one could see. My mother was contently bagging groceries and old people were waiting in line.

Alexis helps me carry Esme to my bedroom upstairs. Once we let go, Esme is wobbly on her heels. She uses the wall to guide herself to my bed. "I'm really sorry." she finally said.

     "Me too." I say quickly.

Alexis looks at Esme then back at me. "What the hell happened?" She asks with a very worried tone.

Esme looks down at her hands in her lap. "I-I have no Earthly idea." She says.

Alexis looks at me and I shrug. I really don't know what happened, but what ever it was it was scary as hell. I had frozen. One of my best friends laid on the ground hallucinating while the other stood just as frozen as I had.

After a few moments of silence Esme finally looks up at me. "Who's eyes were those?" Her voice seems pained as if she had been thinking about it the whole time. Alexis just watches my reaction.

I try to think about who's eyes those were, but I couldn't. No one came to mind. I looked out the window, deep in thought. There were trees everywhere and the light was peaceful. There was one road that led in and out of this sleepy little town. "I have no Earthly Idea." I mocked. It was the truth. I had no clue who those eyes belong to.
