Broken and Scarred

Homeless and no where to go, Rose has been on her own for a few years now. The LA streets are what she calls home. Until her life starts to take a ride for the better.

8. Dates

*The Next Morning*
"So, you are going on a date?" Laurel asks.
"It’s not a date," I say. "He's just taking me to a book store so I can get some books."
"And so he can get on your good side," Kristy smiles.
"I swear guys, I can and will hurt you if you don't stop."
"Please just admit it Rose, when you’re around him you feel different. You like him a tiny bit. He likes you, ya know?"
"Don't doubt that."
"What's wrong with him anyway?" Laurel asks.
"He doesn't know what I've been through. He's had this amazing life and I've always had to walk through shit!"
"To be completely honest, we don't know what you've been through either," Kristy says. "When are you going to tell us?"
"Not now," I let out a breath. "But if you really want to know, I'll tell you in a month’s time. By then we'll be settled in here and I'll be more comfortable. I'm still always on my toes everywhere I go."
"A month’s time," Laurel says. "Sounds fine."
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a ton of books to go get. Then I'll be reading them when I get home. Because I need to calm my mind."
"Alright. Have fun," Kristy smiles.
"I'll try."
*An Hour Later*
"I'm so glad they have carts here," Mason smiles as we come to another stop in front of a shelf full of romance books.
"It’s barely half full," I say. "And I feel like I'm just getting started."
"Are you going to read them all?"
"Eventually," I grab a book of the shelf and start reading the back.
"I have an iPod touch if you'd like to listen to music while you read. You can get any new songs you want."
"Alright. Sounds nice."
"James is taking Kristy out on a date soon."
"And Alex us working up the nerve to ask Laurel on a date."
"That's nice."
"And I was wondering if this is a date."
I look at him and place the book I have in my hands into the cart. "To me? I don't think it is."
He frowns, "Oh, okay."
I don't like seeing him sad. It hurts me. "I won't know though. I've never been on a date."
"Oh," he starts to smile. "Can we call it a date? Our first date?"
I sigh, "I don't want to, but fine. This is a date."
"Do you not like me because I've had an easy life?"
"Pretty much," I pick up another book.
"Wow, kind of harsh."
"Sorry," I shrug.
"You know with me, you can have an easy life too. I'll make sure you are the happiest girl on the planet."
"Okay. You can try that."
*That Night*
"So many books," Lily makes sure her stack is perfectly straight.
"He offered to take me back later this month to get some more," I say.
"Well, James is taking me to a fancy restaurant in two days," Kristy says. "I can't wait."
"Alex just asked me if he wants me and Lily to play video games with him tomorrow," Laurel says. "He was pretty nervous and I think he was trying to ask me out but failed."
"He did," I say as I look over my books lined up at the end of my bed. "I can't wait to get reading tomorrow."
"You'll never be bored again," Kristy says.
"Unless I run out of books."
"It’s gonna take you a while to read all of these books," Lily says.
"At least I've got something to do instead of being on the streets," I sigh. "I haven't read a real book in a long time."
"Hey girls," James pops his head into Kristy and mines room. "This weekend we're going shopping again for things for your rooms. Just letting you guys know."
"Thanks James," Kristy smiles.
"No problem," he smiles back and then exits.
"You like him a lot, don't you?" I look at Kristy.
She nods. "He gets me. I can tell him anything and he sits and listens."
"Do you think its love?" Laurel asks.
"It could be. It just might me."
*The Next Day-Afternoon*
~Laurel's POV~
"Rose got so many books yesterday," I say as I overtake Alex in Mario Kart for the Wii.
"So I heard," Alex sighs.
"I helped stack and there was at least a hundred," Lily says.
"It’s true. I heard they filled a cart and she was carrying books."
"She's reading as we speak," I say.
"And listing to music on the iPod touch Mason gave her."
"She doesn't like him," Lily says. "And I don't know why."
"No one does," I sigh.
"Mason does, and he said it’s because we've lived an easy life," Alex says.
"I'm going to go get a juice box," Lily hops up and skips out of the room.
"Um, Laurel," Alex looks at me as he pauses the game.
I look at him, "Yeah Alex."
"I was wondering if you'd like to go on a date this weekend."
"Yes. I would love to go on a date with you. What shall we do?"
"Anything you want."
"A walk on the beach sounds very nice."
"With ice cream? I know this amazing place right on the beach where we could get some awesome ice cream and then go for a little walk."
I laugh, "That sounds like a perfect first date."
"Why'd you guys stop playing?" Lily comes back sipping on a juice box.
"We were waiting for you," Alex plays off smoothly.
"You looked like you were liking the game and we didn't want you miss any second of it," I add.
"Okay. Well, get back to playing."
"Alright," Alex and I look back at the TV and he puts the game back on.
I can't believe I have a date this weekend. My life is actually turning around.
