Broken and Scarred

Homeless and no where to go, Rose has been on her own for a few years now. The LA streets are what she calls home. Until her life starts to take a ride for the better.

6. Crushes

*Some Time Later*
I slowly open my eyes to see a nice white ceiling. Where's my blue sky? Why am I in a bed? What happened last night? "Those guys," I growl. "They attacked us," I push myself onto my elbows and take a look around. It’s a pretty nice room. Yellow walls, posters of old bands everywhere, a nice big bookcase, a desk with a computer and chair, and three doors for a bathroom, closet, and main entrance most likely.
One of the doors opens and in steps a boy. He's got thick, wavy brown hair; brown eyes; looks around five foot eight and around my age; a very attractive face. I'm not going to say he's hot, even though he totally is. "Good afternoon Rose. I'm Mason in case you've forgotten what happened last night," he smiles and I see his perfectly straight white teeth.
"Um, hi. Where's my friends?"
He walks over to me and sits down on the edge of the bed. "They're here as well. Enjoying lunch downstairs." He tilts me face up, probably because it’s easier to look at my black eye.
"How bad am I?"
"Not too bad. You've got a black eye and a busted lip. Oh, and bruises all up your one side, I've been told. Kristy took a look at your side."
"How's she?"
"Busted lip and a few bruises on her sides."
"How did you know we were in trouble?"
"We know a lot of things."
"Can you tell me?"
"Not now. Once we have known each other longer."
"Can you at least tell me where I am?"
"You're at James, Alex, and mines house.”
“Are you taking us in?”
"Um, don't think like that," Mason shakes his head and let's go of my face. "We are helping you of the streets, so we are taking you in. But we are all equals in the house."
"You know, I'm kind of hungry," I smile.
"Okay, well, I'll help you make it downstairs. Don't want you tripping."
In the next few minutes I get out of bed and am being lead out of my room and downstairs to the kitchen. "Will I get a tour of this house?"
"Yeah. I'll give you one after you fill your tummy."
"I'm sixteen, no reason to treat me like a child."
"Sorry. I'm seventeen by the way."
"Oh, that's cool. You live here with your brothers?"
"They're not my brothers. Just my closest friends."
"Ah, same with my group. Oh, did you get Nudge?"
"Your dog, yeah. She's been playing with our two dogs, Buddy and Goldie."
"Aw, she's making friends."
"The kitchen is just around this corner."

We turn the corner and I see my girls and the boys from last night.
"Rose!" Kristy, Laurel, and Lily shout out.
"Hey guys, miss me while I was out," I smirk.
"Of course," Kristy says.
"Hello Rose," one of the boys in the room says. He has sort of long, blonde hair; green eyes; looks around six foot and a little older than me; attractive, but not my type.
"James," he smiles.
"And I'm Alex," the other boy says. He has long blonde hair with his fringe pushed to the right; grey-blue eyes; looks around five foot six and younger than me; very cute.
"Hello boys," I smile.
"I see you've gotten to know Mason," James says.
"Yes. I just want to thank you for saving us."
"It’s what we do," Alex shrugs. "And you can stay as long as you like. It’s nice to have other people to talk to."
"I don't think we'll be leaving anytime soon," Laurel smiles.
*A Few Hours Later*
"So, I assume you’re rich," I say as we stop in the living room.

Everyone else is out swimming in the ocean as the house is right next to it.
"We aren't that rich," Mason says.
"Do you like saving girls?"
"You girls are the first ones we've saved."
"Ah, so, any girls in your life?"
He chuckles, "My mother. I'm single. All we guys are single."
"Oh, that's nice."
"You don't owe me anything, Rose. I saved your life because I wanted to. Don't think you need to give me anything."
"Alright. So, we'll be seeing a lot of each other now. I want you to know I've been homeless for two and a half years."
"Wow. Um, well then."
"I'd tell you why, but I don't trust you that much. No offense."
"None taken. I get it."
"Do you know how to skateboard?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Well, I've got a penny board and I want to know how to ride it."
"I don't want to teach you now, you’re not fully healed. But in a week or so I'll teach you how to ride."
"Alright. That's great," I smile.
"Hey, want to come and make dinner with me?"
"A home cooked meal. Haven't had one of those in a while. Sure, I'll help you."
He stands up and holds out his hand for me. I grab it and he pulls me up. A little too fast, though. I fall into him, but he keeps us standing. "Sorry, that was my fault."
I look up at him, "Saved me again though."
He chuckles, "I did."
This boy whom I've just met is very interesting. I want to know all about him, his friends, and what the hell they do.
*Thirty Minutes Later*
I laugh at another on of Mason's terrible jokes.
"Are my jokes really funny or are you just laughing?" Mason asks as he continues to add things to the soup.
"They are so bad that they're funny," I take a deep breath. "Oh, you’re gonna give me abs."
"Oh really, wanna hear another joke."
"No, not now. I need to get my breath back."
"Okay, anything you want to talk about?"
"How old is James?"
"He's nineteen."
"And Alex?"
"He is fifteen."
"Where are your parents?"
"They live close to the city."
"Okay. Are you homeschooled or something?"
"We do online school," he stops messing with the soup and looks at me. "We can sign you up if you want?"
"Later. Um, who were the guys that attacked us?"
"Some kind of thugs. Once they ran, the police were right there to get them."
"So you work the police?"
"Kind of. They help us, we help them. It’s not like we’re getting paid or anything. The only money we get is from all our parents."
"Interesting. Anything you want to know about me?"
"Not really. I asked Kristy about you, and she told me what little she knew of you. You keep to yourself."
"So, I don't trust people. I'll tell my story once I feel ready."
"Okay, okay. I get it. I understand. Hey, you wanna make brownies?" He smiles.
I giggle, "Nice change of subject. Sure, I'd love to make some brownies."
*An Hour Later*
"This soup is really good," James smiles. "Good job Mason and Rose."
"Thanks," Mason and I say.
"So, do you guys know how long you'll be staying?" Alex asks.
Kristy, Laurel, and Lily look at me. "That's all up to Rose," Kristy says.
I sigh, "I don't know how long we'll stay. As long as we can, I guess. Do you have a time limit?"
"Of course not," James says. "You're welcome here as long as you want."
"You never have to leave if you don't want to," Alex says.
"Really?" Laurel locks eyes with Alex.
"Really," Alex smiles and I see Laurel's cheeks become a light pink. Oh, so someone's got a crush.
"I don't think we could intrude forever," Kristy says.
"It’s not intruding," James locks eyes with Kristy. "It’s cool having other people here."
"It’s cool to meet new people," she smiles as her cheeks turn a light pink. Oh, so both older girls have crushes. At least Lily likes dogs more than boys.
"We'll do things around the house to earn our keep," I say. "That's how I was raised, to help those who help," I look at Mason as he looks at me. I think my stomach does a flip. Oh hell no. I don't want to be crushing on anyone. I don't crush on anyone.
*That Night*
"This is sweet," Kristy smiles. We get to share a room together while Laurel and Lily share a room across the hall.
"I know," I smile. "A real bed for once. I'll sleep easy tonight."
"Like when you passed out?"
"I had been punched multiple times in the face," I gingerly touch my black eye. "Plus, the pain that guy put on my arm was enough to make anyone pass out."
"I don't blame you, it’s just amazing how long you fought, and then just went out."
"Like a light," I hop into bed.
"Exactly," she turns off then light and I hear her get into her bed. "Are we really staying here for a long time?"
"I don't see why not, I mean, they are taking us in."
"So, you and James, eh?"
"What? No, well, yes. I don't know. He's very nice and very attractive, but we're so different."
"I bet Laurel is feeling the same way about Alex."
"How did you know?"
"Your faces gave it all away. I'm glad Lily isn't into boys yet."
"What about you, huh? Mason and you are so cute."
"I don't like him."
"Oh really. Out of all the boys who could have given you a tour of the house, you chose Mason in a split second. I see right through you Rose. You have a crush and can't admit it."
"I don't get crushes. More importantly I don't crush on guys like him."
"Rich guys? Is that all he is to you? Come on, look past that. He seems like a sweet boy."
"Blah blah blah, I get it alright. I just don't think I'll fall for him."
"Keep telling yourself that, even though it’s a big false statement," she yawns. "Goodnight Rose."
"Goodnight Kristy," I roll onto my side. I don't want to like Mason, but why do I feel like he's the one.
Snap out of it Rose. He's not the one. Oh, who am I kidding?

Hope you liked it! :D
