The bus turned right onto the coast road which took them down past the Cannon pub then the old mill that was now just a ruin. It turned right again then the conductor came up and took their fares. Tom paid for Eva even though she insisted on paying for herself.

“Stubborn little bugger aren’t you?’

“I like to pay my way.’

“Well not when you’re with me you don’t lady.’

“Who say’s I’m with you; Look Tom Lawson just because you bought me a drink and paid my bus fare doesn’t mean I’m your possession you know.’

“Hold on a minute Eva; I never said that.’ What I’m saying is if you were my girl then you will never have to pay. I don’t believe that women should pay when they have a man to pay for them.’

“What makes you think that I want to be your girl then Tom?’

“Well because I am different from all the other toe rags that you know; plus I’m charming; well dressed, and I know how to treat a lady.’

“The bus passed the Rex Cinema and Tom looked out of the window. “ Anyone fancy the pictures tomorrow night then.

“There you go again with your then’s Tom.’

“Sorry but would you like to go to the flicks with me tomorrow night.

“I will have to see what I’m doing.

“You don’t work on Saturday night do you?

“No, but I may have other plans Tom.’

“Look Eva if you don’t like me just say so and I will let you get on with your life but don’t play hard to get with me. I have been through this routine many times.’

Eva thought for a moment then went into her hand bag and took out her round compact with powder and mirror. She reapplied some red lipstick before answering.

“Yes Tom I like you, but get me straight the first time you start bossing me around and you can walk. Is that understood?

“Perfectly; now are we going to the pictures tomorrow night or what?

“Alright I will meet you outside at 7:00 p.m. and if you are Late Tom Lawson don’t bother turning up.’

“Come on Eva give me a break, it depends on the buses you know.’

“Set off earlier then, but get here on time or forget it.’

“Christ Eva you don’t give a man any chances do you?’

“Anyone who goes out with me has to treat me with respect. I’m not going to be one of your floozies who you use and abuse.’

“I’ll remember that.’

“You better had too Tom.’

The bus pulled into Northumberland Square and Tom stood up to let Eva out.
