The doctor went though a series of (NIDED) tests on Tim when it was over Doctor Cashmin confirmed her worst fears; Tim was deaf. “We will need to start a grammar syntax programme immediately for Tim, Mrs Lawson. Tim must learn to sign now or he will never be able to communicate in the hearing world.

“Will Tim ever be able to hear Doctor?’

“I think that fever he had when he was born had a lot to do with his hearing loss; I cannot say at this time whether or not this is permanent.

“I will make an appointment for you both to see Bernard Johnson who is the top hearing specialist in the country.’” He will help you to communicate with your son.’

“Thank you Doctor.’

Eva took Tim by the hand then led him to his push chair and strapped him in.

When she got in Tom was having a bath.

“I’ve just come back from the doctors with Tim.

“What’s wrong with him?

“He’s deaf Tom; hear cannot hear us this is why he cannot speak.

“How do they know?

“They did a series of tests today and it was proven.’

“They could be wrong Eva.’

“They aren’t Tom, I dropped a plate this afternoon Tim was right beside me at the time and he never flickered. I came up behind him and clapped my hands and no response.

“Tom still wasn’t convinced until he called Tim’s name and he didn’t respond even though he was standing in the doorway.’

“I have got to go for signing, grammar, and syntax therapy with Tim so I can communicate with him.

“I will go with you if you like.’

The doctor said there is no need I can teach you when Professor Bernard Johnson teaches me.’

“Okay, when do you begin these tests?

“Soon as possible so I guess it will begin next week. Doctor Cashmin is going to ring me when it is arranged.

“I made some macaroni cheese with gammon and sliced tomatoes and boiled eggs.’

I saw it in one of the woman’s own magazines and it looked really nice so I thought I would give it a go.’

Eva sat Tim in his high chair then gave him a plastic spoon. She spooned the macaroni into his plastic dish then showed hi how to eat it.

Tim picked up the spoon in his left hand and began to eat with it. Eva took the spoon from him and transferred it to his right but Tim made a frustrating noise and returned the spoon back into his left hand and continued to eatLooks like our son is going to be left handed said Tom.’

“My father is left handed said Eva.
