Eva picked up the phone and rang her parents to tell them that they we’re back home safely.

“Did you have a good time love asked her mother?

“Yes, mam it was marvellous, I will tell you all about it; I will pop in tomorrow from work.

“Work Eva, are you going back to work?

“Yes mam; I love my job and it gives me my independence. I don’t want to be totally reliant on Tom’s money; I want to be able to go out and buy my own things.

“I understand love but Tom might have other ideas you know. Tom might want to start a family.’

“Mam I’ve only been married a few days give me time to get settled in first.’

“I will see you tomorrow then Eva, take care.’

“I will mam by for now, say hello to dad when he comes in.’

Eva hung up then went to unpack.

“Eva I’m going over to the lifeboat station; I won’t be long shouted Tom from the bedroom as he changed into a pair of jeans and threw on his black seaman’s jacket and a woollen hat that Eva had knitted for him.’

Eva was about to reply but the back door closed and Eva found herself alone in the cottage for the first time. The realisation hit her like a ton of bricks; was this the way it was going to be for the next forty years. Tom out fishing all day then coming in then out again to the lifeboat station.’

“She would have to make some changes she thought as she unpacked the clothes from the cases and placed them into the wardrobe.

Eva tried to forget about Tom’s work as she prepared his first dinner for him from what was in the fridge and cupboards.

“She would do some shopping at the weekend where she would buy some things she liked to eat.

She made a hotpot tonight for him along with some rice pudding; she hoped that he would like it.

It was near to ten o’clock when Tom returned, Eva wasn’t happy.

“Where have you been Tom the food is ruined; I thought you said that you wouldn’t be long?

“I had to check all the equipment Eva’ I’m responsible; I’m the coxswain you know.’

Wasn’t anyone else who could do that?

“No Eva, this is my job he said raising his voice.’

“Don’t you raise your voice to me Tom Lawson; Just because we’re married doesn’t mean you can talk to me this way.

“Look Eva I am a life boatman, you knew that before we got wed, now don’t get on your high horse with me.
