Geordie put his arm around Nora and they kissed but when Tom tried Eva told him to get a grip of himself. Tom removed his arm and sat miserably watching the film.

For three and a half hours Tom played the absolute gentleman he sat and watched the film whilst Nora and Geordie snogged the night away. Tom began to wonder if it was him and on the way home he brought it up. “What’s wrong with me Eva he asked?’

“It’s not you Tom it’s me; look! I like you as I said but I want to take things slowly; lets get to know one another. If you don’t want to do that then I will understand if you want to walk away.’

“I want to get to know you too Eva; but you know you cannot play St Joan forever.’

“I know that Tom and I’m not leading you on; just be a patient with me. We only just met last night and I need time.’

“Alright Eva I understand; I will get the bus with you to the Square but I am staying on it to Cullercoats as I don’t fancy walking home again.’

“So you go out in all weathers to rescue people.’

“Yes.’

“Is it dangerous?

“It can be if you do not know what you are doing but I’ve been a volunteer since I was sixteen.

“You don’t get paid; why do you do it?

“Because If I didn’t do it and the rest of the crew didn’t, who would; people would die out there Eva.’

“Yes I see; do you ever get scared out there?’

“I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t. When the waves twelve feet high come crashing down on top of you that is when you get scared and you wonder if you will ever see land again. It is then that you pray to God that he brings you your crew and the people who you are rescuing home safely.’

“Have you ever lost anyone at sea?

“Yes, we lost a little boy about seven years old. He was out fishing with his father. A great storm hit them about five miles out when their engine failed. By the time we got to them the boat was going down and both father and son had been in the sea over forty minutes. It was icy cold out there; we got them both on board but the boy was
