13. Secret 2
We heard the basement door open and all of us stop breathing, hoping my dad will just get another beer and go back downstairs. “What the hell?!” he screamed. Uh-oh.
We all ran to the living room where dad was with JD's lifeless body. He took a swallow from his bottle and turned to us. “Somebody better explain to me what the fuck is goin' on here before I call the cops.” he screamed.
I don't look at JD, I can't.
We don't say anything, no one does until Holland does something unexpected; he pulls a gun out of his back pocket and aims it at my dad. He doesn't do anything, doesn't even flinch, just takes another swig from his bottle and laughs. “Son, put that away before you hurt yourself, what the hell do you think you're doing? You think your gonna shoot me?”
“Yes sir, I am. We can't have you going to the cops.” he replies calmly.
My dad looks at Rachel and I. “You're gonna let 'em do this? Huh? Kill your own father? We have the same blood running through our veins!”
“You are nothing like us!” Rachel screamed at him. I don't speak though, I still can't, I'm still to shocked. But I swallow back my tears, I wasn't going to give him that satisfaction.
“No, you're right.” he laughed. “My daughters wouldn't be shitty, no-good, dirty, rotten, worthless hoods!”
“What the fuck is wrong with you, these are your kids your talking about!” Holland yelled.
“Calm down, kid. You're gonna kill me anyways so just let me have this.” he said forcefully. “Let me tell you something about Gayle though, girls.”
“Don't talk about our mother, you scum bag. She was a good woman, you didn't deserve her.” Rachel snapped.
“What about mom?” I'm finally able to say. I put my hand on Holland's arm, signaling him to wait for my dad to finish talking before he does anything else.
“Funny you say that Rachel because you know better then anyone else here that Uncle Jack didn't kill her..”
“Shut up!” Rachel yelled.
Dad looked at me. “Rachel killed her. Shot her right in the face.”
Then Holland shot him.
My dad falls to the ground with a beer bottle clenched tightly in his hand and a smile on his face.
