Charlotte walked along the barren land for about 20 minutes before a dark structure started to appear on the horizon, not seeing any other signs of life, she made a bee line towards it. She picked up the pace, determined to get out of the sweltering heat as quickly as possible. As she got closer to the structure, Charlotte recognises the sounds of colliding metal, screaming and screeching. She slows down, hesitating. She looked around her again with a glimpse of hope for another sanctuary but was met with the never ending dry land. “It’s hopeless…” she sighed and trudged on.
She stops in front of a huge gate which loomed over her, black and rusty. On the lock of the gate were tiny engraved words. She squinted and read ” Home…of the…Rejected”. “Oh, I guess I’m at the right place then” She scoffed to herself. She reaches for the gate with her right arm, which sent excruciating pains throughout her body as the metal plates pushed into her flesh. “GAH!!!”. Charlotte pauses to let the pain recede, then tries to push with her left arm. The gate doesn’t budge. She leans her whole body against the gate in another failed attempt to open it. ” Won’t this damned gate OPEN?!” She exclaims in frustration, striking the gate with her right arm in the moment of anger. The gate flew open, crashing into the stone wall beside it. The wall cracks. “Holy…” She looked down at the gold plated arm, which suffered no more than a scratch. She closes and opens her fist, flipping her arm around repeatedly as she stared at it in awe.
“HEY! WHAT IN THE FLIPPIN’ WORLD DID YOU DO TO THE GATE?!”
Instantly, Charlotte snapped out of her trance and looked up only to feel a stinging sensation at her cheek. She had fallen to the ground 2 meters away. She looked up to see a woman, tall and lean, her right arm and both her legs encased in the gold plates. She stared down coldly at charlotte, scanning her from head to toe. “Newbie, are you not?” Her voice was deeper than a usual female, slightly flatter too. Charlotte nodded, pulling out the card that was given to her. The woman took her by the arm and yanked her into the compounds, then with her right arm forced the gate out of the wall and slammed it shut.
Charlotte looked up to see a world of gears, spinning, grinding and pumping. Men and women, old and young were toiling at the ground, working the machines. The tall woman dragged charlotte across these sites and toward the shacks. What was previously used as cargo containers were now stacked atop each other to create make shift apartments for those that were dismissed from the program. The woman stopped in front of a black container with a blue stripe running down its side. She threw Charlotte on the ground in front of it.
“Rest today, you will start working tomorrow at 0400 sharp”
Charlotte rebutted, pulling out the card ” but it says here I’ll only start working-” The woman pulled Charlotte up by the collar so that their eyes met. Charlotte dropped the card onto the ground. The woman glared at her “You may be a pretty one. But it’s an order, slave.” With that, she let go and walked away, her golden plated legs leaving deep footprints in the sand. Charlotte fell hard on her back, the resulting dust covered the card on the ground. Anger swelled up in her, she clenched her fist and struck the ground, leaving a small crater.
” I am the Descendant of Aphrodite…how dare the Fleet treat me in this manner. I’ll show them…” She growled under her breath before revealing a smirk. She helped herself up and strut into the container.
