My first year with the Marauders wasn't as eventful as I thought it would be. I remember a few things that we did that year, they were, well, things, but I still had a lot of fun with them. The first thing that I remember is when Remus and I were reading under a tree on the grounds while James hit on my friend Lily.
"When is he ever going to realize she is never going to say yes to anything he asks?" I asked Remus as I turned the page of my book.
"Do you know where Padfoot is?"
"Nope. That could be dangerous."
"Well, I''m pretty sure Wormtail is with him."
"Still dangerous Remus." I turned another page.
Out of nowhere Sirius was beside me, "What are you two talking about?"
"How dangerous you being left alone is." I told him. By that part of the year, he had a nickname for me. Marauder Mini. (Apparently, James and Remus thought that fit me well too. Because I still, in my fourth year, they haven't stopped calling me that.)
"Yes that is true Mini."
"I told you Thursday, stop calling me that Sirius. Where did James go?" James wasn't hitting on Lily anymore.
"He's probably tormenting Snivellus." said Sirius.
"A poor boy who is a friend of Lily's that Prongs and Padfoot insist on calling Snivellus." said Remus looking up from his book. Sure enough James was hexing a boy with dark hair. I threw down my book.
"James! James! Leave him alone!" I started running. When I reached him I started hitting James across the arm. He was taller than me. "Stop it! Quit being so mean!"
The boy looked up at me. I met his eyes for only a minute until I turned back to James. I tried to grab his wand. He jinxed the boy this time. I couldn't think of anything else to do. I jumped in front of the boy. The next hex James cast hit me. It hurt. I had never been hexed so this was new. James stopped after his hex hit me. The next thing I remember, James was over me, Remus actually sat up from reading, Sirius was playing with my hair, and Peter was shaking rapidly. The boy they were calling Snivellus was sat a good four feet away from where I was laying.
I sat up and brushed Sirius' hand out of my hair. "James Potter." was all I could manage. I walked over to the dark haired boy, who was now in the company of Lily Evans. "Are you okay?" I asked sitting down next to him.
"Quite fine," his voice was deep and dark. "Thank you."
"No problem." The Marauders were walking toward me. "James and Sirius can be prats." I held out my hand to him. "What's your name?"
"My name? Erm-Severus Snape."
"I'm Melanie Bagtrab."
"Oi! Mini! Get away from Snivellus. He's a bad egg." said James laughing.
"If they tease you again tell me." I told Severus.
I walked angrily back to Remus under the tree. He handed me a piece of chocolate. He always had some. He also only shared it with me.
Another day we were walking through the corridors and Sirius said the weirdest thing. "Why do we like Mini?" I stopped, then Sirius, then James, then Peter, finally Remus stopped and put his book at his side. They were all staring at me. I couldn't deal with being stared at, so I just asked, "Why do you all like me?"
I got a shrug from Sirius. "Honestly, I don't even know any more." from James. Peter simply told me, "Because." Remus said nothing. He did nothing either.
Finally after only a few seconds he put his book back to his face and hurried to Potions.
I sat with Lily in the Gryffindor Common Room. Remus looked tired reading his book, James shot me jealous looks, and Sirius was sending me butterflies he conjured with his wand. Peter was nowhere to be found. Lily was reading a story called One Summer. "Did Remy lend you that?" she looked over the top,
"Yes." I nodded my head. I couldn't see what Remus was reading now. Lily was very close to the end. Remus looked as if he had just started his. James looked to me then to Lilly.
"Hey, Evans I was wonderi-"
"I was just-"
Silence filled the Common Room for the longest time I'd heard since I started at Hogwarts. Finally James said, "I just wanted to know what the potions homework was."
I heard snickering from Sirius. Remus didn't put his book down, but rolled his eyes. Peter laughed once. I even started to snicker. Lily sighed and rolled her eyes. She started to walk up the stairs the the dormitory. "Could you at least tell me?!" James yelled still sitting in his seat. Lily turned around.
"The affects of Beozar Potter."
She stomped up the steps. We waited about five minutes, then me, Sirius, Remus, Peter, and even James all broke into laughter. "The one time you don't pester her for a date, mate!" Sirius laughed.
