"Bye sweetie, have fun!" My mum yells out the car window as I get out. I smile at her, subtly checking out my appearance in the side mirror. I get a familiar anxious feeling as I open the door to Villa Verdi, the restaurant I now work at - thanks to my mother. It's my third shift, so I shouldn't be nervous, but it's a Saturday night, and my boss Daniel had told me it's the busiest night for the small restaurant. I feel my palms begin to sweat, and quickly wipe them on my jeans.
No customers are here yet, it's only 5.30 after all, so I walk towards the kitchen, only to be knocked backwards by Marc, the pizza chef, as he rushes out to begin rolling dough.
"Oh shit, sorry Mel! Oh God... I mean Mia!" I laugh as he apologises for getting my name wrong, for the fifth time this week.
"Marc, it's okay!" I continue giggling as he gives me a giant bear hug. I've only met a few people that work here, but Marc is already my favourite. At 28, he still acts like he's 16, and I love that he hasn't lost his boyish tendencies. Marc is filipino, but moved to Australia when he was young, and the result is a uniquely mish-mashed accent that seems to be ever changing. We've been getting along really well, and since he works at Sedici 6 times a week, I'm glad that I'll always have someone to laugh and joke around with.
Marc gets to work rolling out the dough for the dozens of pizzas he'll make tonight, and I stroll over to the book at the front which holds all of tonight's reservations. After giving each booking a table number, I busy myself by placing menus on each reserved table. A few minutes later the door swings open, revealing Olivia, my friend from school who put in the good words I needed to get this job.
"Hey Liv!" I smile at her happily.
"Hey Mia! It's our first shift together, I'm so excited!!" She squeals as she hugs me, before wandering off to the kitchen to say hello to Daniel.
Olivia, known as Liv at Villa Verdi, has been my friend since primary school, and although things have been rocky lately, we agreed to ignore it all at work. Liv is what people would call a 'blonde bombshell', she's stunning. She's got long blonde hair that falls down her back, perfectly straight teeth, and chocolate brown eyes, framed with long lashes. I'm not sure that's what the asshole guys notice though, most of them are more focused on her DD boobs and ass that could rival Kim Kardashian's. Everyone falls in love with her appearance, and then her personality shortly after. She's like me in the way that she definitely got some choice things to say about a lot of people. We get along because I share that characteristic, we have a lot of fun together, and we like a lot of the same things.
As it reaches 6 o'clock, people begin to arrive at the restaurant, and Liv gets to work, sitting them all at their tables and asking them all about how they spent their day. I watch her from behind the counter, having just put an order for pizzas into the computer. I zone out for a moment, studying the way Liv waitresses, straining to hear everything she says so that I'll be able to repeat it when I start taking table orders.
I'm torn from my thoughts by the ringing of the phone, which is picked up by someone else before I reach it. I turn around to see who it belongs to, and my breath hitches slightly. I can't help but stare as the boy in front of me begins to talk to the person on the phone. He's tall, with gorgeous blue eyes that seem to twinkle in the dim lights of the restaurant. His sandy blonde hair is styled perfectly in a precise quiff, and he has a black lip ring that fills my stomach with butterflies and my head with naughty thoughts. He hangs up the phone after finishing an order, and turns to put it back where he got it from. It takes every ounce of self control I have not to tell him how sexy he is, and as I'm busy trying to control myself, I miss something he says. I try to come up with a polite what of saying, 'I was too busy thinking about how sexy you are to listen to what you said, sorry?'
"I, um.. I'm supposed to be watching you to learn how to answer the phone. I'm not weirdly staring at you, I promise.." I say lamely, embarrassing myself more than I thought was humanly possible. Nice going, Mia. He chuckles and raises an eyebrow. "Sure you're not.. and don't worry, I'm used to it." He winks at me before walking into the kitchen, leaving me completely stumped for words. Fuck, he's beautiful, and damn he's charming as hell. Marc turns to me from his pizza making station, "Sorry Mia, I should've told you about Luke. Maybe then you wouldn't have drooled all over yourself." He blows me a kiss, and starts laughing, obviously used to the reaction girls have to Luke.
The night passes quickly, and I find myself craving his touch. I talk to him at every opportunity, making him laugh with my little quirks and sassy comments.
All too soon, it's time for me to go home, and I resist the urge to tell Daniel that I want to stay. I say my goodbyes, stopping for a second to take in Luke's appearance once more, before he catches me staring, and gives me a gorgeous smile and a wave.
I step out into the warm summer air and walk over to mum's car, the whole while thinking about how much trouble I'm in. But that lip ring.. His smile, oh god he makes me weak at the knees and I only just met him. Fuck.
