One Day (LRH)

My mum pushed me to get a job as soon as I turned 15, reluctantly, I applied for a waitressing job at a little restaurant just down the road from my house. Whether it was the biggest mistake, or best decision of my life, I'm not sure yet. There, on a warm Saturday night, I met Luke. He turned my whole world upside down, hell, he became my whole world. And as the sun falls each night, so too do I.. for him. Surely that's not so bad.. Is it? Who am I kidding, I'm screwed.

12. Sorry For Fucking You Around

We have to be at the neighbourly gathering in about an hour, so I drag myself out of bed and go to my mirror to inspect my face. I recoil at the image of my puffy eyes and smudged make up. Without looking in the mirror again, I grab my big bath towel and head for the shower.

As the steamy water cascades down my bare body, I contemplate life. The shower is the best place to have important conversations with myself. I sit down heavily on the floor of the shower, and begin massaging shampoo into my hair, being careful not to push hard on my aching head. I still haven't replied to Luke's message from last night, but I really don't want to get into any big conversations where I'm vulnerable and he could easily hurt my feelings. It is Christmas Eve, after all. I wash out the shampoo, and start combing conditioner through my hair.

I have this big Christmas celebration all day today, and we probably won't get home from the neighbour's house until about 10pm, so I'll just reply then. I'll be so excited about Christmas that I can't possibly get upset, I mean, hello, Santa's coming tonight! I quickly shave my armpits, let the water wash out my conditioner, and turn the shower off, before stepping out and wrapping myself in my towel. The plush material starts to absorb the water droplets covering my body, and I wrap my hair in a thin blue towel to rid it off dampness.

I'm sitting in my underwear in front of the mirror when Piper walks in, still dressed in her pyjamas. "What are you wearing?" She asks me eagerly, and I know she wants to wear something like me. Piper is the little sister every big sister dreams of having. Naturally, she's annoying most of the time, but she's a beautiful little creature, with long golden brown hair that falls in perfect little ringlets down her back, big brown eyes, and plump little cupid's bow lips. She looks nothing like me, and acts nothing like me, but we get along better than any of my siblings. She lets me do her hair and choose her clothes, and I take her with me whenever I'm going somewhere fun, or I have no friends to take.

"Not sure, probably just my white summer dress, you know, the one I always wear?" Piper nods, and watches for a second as I'm covering my blemishes with concealer. "Why are you putting make up on? We're going swimming!" She says incredulously. Piper's only 11, so she's not quite at the make up stage yet, but I know she wishes she was. "I want to look nice in the photos!" I look at her through the mirror and stick my tongue out, she makes an ugly face at me and we both laugh.

"OLIVIA!!" I call to my older sister, who's room is just down the hall from mine.

"WHAT?" She calls back, over the sound of mum's hairdryer from the her room.

"What are you wearing?" I ask her, because, like Piper, I want to match my older sister.

"Probably just some black shorts and a midriff, it's only the neighbours!" She answers me, and I get back to my make up. Olivia is 19, and the polar opposite to me. She's tall, really skinny, with no curves and no boobs whatsoever. She's got a killer model figure, and eyebrows that could rival Kylie Jenner's. Olivia is quite alternative, she wears what she wants, says what she wants, and does what she wants, no one else's opinion matters, she doesn't care what anyone thinks. I love Olivia of course, she's my sister, but we couldn't be more different. We don't get along as well as Piper and I do, but there are occasional moments where we'll share some gossip or have a laugh together. She never offers to do my hair or make up or anything like that, but we manage.

At around 10.30, the three of us are finally ready, and we wander downstairs into the kitchen together. When we walk into the room, mum glances up at us and smiles, before starting to hand us platters of food to take.

"Come on girls, get moving, we're already late!" She hands me the kebabs, which look amazing, and I have to stop myself from eating one. Dad comes in from the garage, holding several cases of beer and a bottle of champagne. He kisses mum on the cheek, and they start to talk about something to do with Christmas in hushed tones. I follow Olivia and Piper out of the room towards the front door, all of us holding delicious looking food. As we're wondering how we're going to open the door, Charlie walks out of his room, dressed in board shorts and a muscle tank, with a happy look on his face. He opens the door for us, and I tell him to go and get something to carry from mum.

The three of us girls walk out the front door and head toward the West's house, which is only 20 metres from our's. We live in a battle-axe block, together with 3 other houses. We never talk to the neighbours that are directly next to us; they're old and grouchy, so we tend to stay out of their way and we never invite them to anything. Next to them is the Squires'; Cathy, and her two girls, Jess and Emma. Jess is the same age as Olivia, and Emma is a couple of years older. Both the girls are extremely intelligent, with Emma being slightly self-obsessed and loud, where Jess is timid and loving. The first house is home to the West family, who are hosting this year's Christmas celebration. The West family includes 2 parents and 4 kids, much like my own house. Matt and Teresa are the parents of Michael, David, Gabrielle and Simone. The boys are a little younger than Piper, and usually hang out with Charlie at these gatherings. Gabby is in Piper's school year, and they're really close friends, they're really obsessed with these toys called trash packs at the moment, and they spend a lot of time playing with them or trading them. Sim just turned 14, and since she's the closest in age to me, we spend a lot of time together at these things. In the holidays, Piper, Gabby, Sim and I all hang out together quite a bit, either talking about movellas, playing mariokart, or in one of our pools, we have a lot of fun together, and sometimes it's just really nice to get away from the school crowd and hang out with some younger girls. We also bond over one direction and 5sos without being judged, which is nice, since both bands are amazing. The girls tend to have a lot more energy than my group at school, and they're still at the age where it's 'appropriate' to play games, and I enjoy being able to be silly with them, and make up games to play together.

We reach the West's front door, with Mum, Dad and Charlie a few metres behind us. Piper knocks on the door with her head, since all our hands are full, and I laugh at her. Before long, Michael and David open the door together, shouting happily about our arrival. We trail into their kitchen and set down our platters of food onto the work surface.

"Mim!" Sim squeals, as she comes in the sliding door from outside. We hug, and walk out to the pool area together, with Piper trailing behind. "Where's Gabby?" She asks, after seeing that Gabby wasn't outside.

"Oh, she's upstairs setting up her trashies, go and find her and tell her to come downstairs. We've gotta open presents now that you're finally here!" Sim says, and Piper scurries inside to get Gabby. We always open presents before food or anything else, otherwise we all get too impatient.

I say hello to Matt, Teresa and Cathy, and swipe a cracker from the snack plate that's on the big table under the pergola. Sim and I both take a seat at the table, as Matt passes around colourful cocktails for all the adults. Charlie comes out and sets down the big bag of presents we brought, followed by Michael and David, who are carrying two more bags, I assume they're the Squires' and West's presents. Every year since we moved in, we've bought a bunch of cute, inexpensive presents for each person in the street, outside of our own family. Then, on Christmas Eve, we get together to exchange gifts, in a big celebration with lots of food, lots of alcohol (adults only), and lots of fun and laughter.

Michael and David are playing santa this year, so once everyone is seated, they start to dig around in the bags and pull out presents for everyone. Sim and I get given one at the same time, and we start opening them, as everyone else is ripping the paper off of their own gifts. I unwrap a book and a bottle of Mariah Carey perfume - one of my favourite smells. Sim opens a cool t-shirt, and we both thank the family it came from, happy with our first gift.

                                                                                        ➰

A while later, once we'd playing a crazy game of stuck in the mud, in the pool, and eaten a delicious spread of summer foods, Gabby, Sim, Piper and I are stretched out across Sim's bed for what we call a 'gossip session'.

"Okay girls, what have you got for me?" I ask Gabby and Piper, and they both get sheepish looks on their faces. "Tell tell! I know you've got goss you two!"  The two of them look at each other and burst into a fit of giggles, before getting into an argument about who should tell the story. Sim yells at them to tell us, and they decide that Gabby should be the one. "Piper likes Elicia's boyfriend!" Gabby squeals.

"No way! Does Elicia know?" Sim asks, and Piper shakes her head.

"Shit, that's not gonna go down well Pipes..." I raise my eyebrows at her, and Sim agrees with me.

"Hopefully she never finds out, but it sucks because she's always talking about him and I really like him." Piper says shyly.

"Aw, it's okay, I'm sure they'll break up soon anyway... no one in year 6 goes out for more than 2 weeks!" I tap Sim on the shoulder, urging her to join in on helping cheer Piper up.

"Yeah! And Elicia is so annoying!" Sim pipes up from next to me. Gabby nods her head in clear agreement, and Piper can't help but laugh.

"There you go, sorted!" I smile at her, and we have a big group hug, all of us crushing Piper at the bottom. After a few moments she's yelling at us to get off and let her breathe, so we return to our normal positions, all of us laughing.

"Hey Mim, what's going on with Luke?" Gabby asks me, brushing my hair, as she always does during gossip sessions. I let out a long, frustrated sigh, and they all giggle, knowing that a big complain is coming.

"Well, we hung out last night, we made out last night, it was amazing and he was so beautiful and kind. He told me my smile stops time, and that I'm perfect, and we kissed in the rain!" I smile at the memories of last night.

"You did not!" Sim shouts, a massive grin on her face. I nod, and she claps excitedly.

"Anyway, I got home at like 3.45 this morning, which is why I look so gross today by the way! He texted me as I was getting into bed, this big message about how he can't do this anymore, and he's done and doesn't want to be with me. So I burst into tears and was being all sad and pathetic about it because it was really hurtful. Then I messaged him back, and just said 'fine' and a thumbs up emoji, and then this morning when I woke up I had an apology message and he asked me if I'm okay! I mean, really?! Yes, I'm fucking fabulous, thanks a lot you asshole!" I'm red in the face by the time I've finished speaking, and the girls are looking pretty grumpy too.

"What the fuck!" Sim says, "How could he do that?" I shake my head in response, because I have no idea.

"Oh my gosh! I actually hate him!" Piper says angrily.

"Yeah me too!" Gabby agrees, her brow furrowed. I can't help but smile at the sweetness of my girls. They are so lovely.

                                                                                         ➰

When my family and I finally walk in the front door, it's gone 11 and I am absolutely exhausted. I crawl up the stairs after saying goodnight to my parents, and flop onto my bed. My limbs ache with all the fun I had today, and my brain is completely ready to shut down. I throw my dress off and climb under my covers, I'm about to turn my bedside light off when I see my phone, shoved down the side of my bed where I left it this morning. Should I.. Just check if Luke messaged me? I mean, he probably didn't.. But just in case. I grab my phone, ignore the million messages from the group chat I have with Belle and the other girls, and go into iMessage. My heart lurches as I see two unread messages from him.

Bub, I'm so sorry, I'm sorry for fucking you around. I know I already said it, but I'm serious. I know you probably want nothing to do with me or know of my existence, and I know you probably don't want to talk to me, but I do want to talk to you, and I'm sorry for everything and idk it'd be cool one day if things didn't suck and we could. Hope you're okay. X

Hey, 💜
I'm sorry

I smile, I can't help it, he knows just how to get me. All of my frustrations an anger slip away, and pure love overtakes me once again. It's a bittersweet feeling, but I try to focus on the good, and hold onto that. God knows I need to with Luke.

It's okay, I'm okay. Don't do that again Luke, it's not fair on me. Tell your mum I said happy birthday, I hope you've had a great day.
Hey,
💜

A/N: Haven't edited this either, but I'll get round to it tomorrow at some point, sorry if there are mistakes!! You're welcome for the back to back update my loves xx
