26. Lucy

“Thank you so much for having me Liz and Andrew, dinner was delicious and it was lovely to see you both!” I say cheerily on my way past the Hemmings’ living room, where Liz and Andrew sit cuddled up on the couch, eating chocolate and watching Masterchef.

“Oh Mia it was no trouble at all! We love having you here, please come over again soon darling. Ask your mother about Noosa!” Liz chirps back, with a pointed look at Luke I tell her I’ll be sure to ask, then Luke and I make our way out the front door to his car.

The drive home is uncomfortable for both of us. Luke refused to tell me why I couldn’t come to Noosa, just that it was non-negotiable and I had to accept that, so I asked him to take me home because I wanted to go to bed. It’s 9pm. I’m not even that angry about him not telling me why I can’t go, I’m angry because he told me I can’t go. He took Lucy there last year, I saw the pictures on her Instagram, the two of them smiling triumphantly as they sat in the chair they made of sand, complete with two beer holders. Luke looked so happy with her, I haven’t been able to shake the image since I saw it a few weeks ago. I know I shouldn’t have been snooping on her social but I had to know what she was like. What he was like with her. Since the night we kissed I’ve heard next to nothing about her, I caught half sentences of a phone call he had with her after work about a month ago, he was angry, telling her he never wanted to see her again. I never had the nerve to ask why, I knew he wouldn’t tell me anyway.

We pull up to my driveway and as usual, Luke parks on the road next to the battle-axe block. I turn to face him, face hard and cold. “Mim, don’t be like that. I hate you being mad at me.” He looks at me pleadingly, but my face stays the same. For once, I won’t let him cajole me out of this, I’m so angry I can’t see straight, I know I need to get inside to process what’s gone on tonight.

“Goodnight, Luke. Thanks for inviting me to dinner, be sure to thank your parents again for me. I had a lovely time.” I manage a half smile, before unbuckling my seatbelt and trying to open my door, only to find it locked.

“Seriously, Mia? Calm down, what do you want from me?”

“I want you to take me to Noosa with you! I want you to act for one second like you’d love to have me there, instead of instantly telling me I can’t come and then refusing to explain anything! You just said you’d try dating, but I can’t date someone that won’t even tell me the truth!” I’m close to tears now; I can’t believe I thought that dating would fix our chaos. We’re going to be like this forever.

Luke reaches out for my hand and strokes his thumb across my palm. “Hey,” he says in a low voice. “I’m sorry, and you’re right. What do you want to know bub?”

“I want to know why you won’t let me come. You took Lucy.” I look down, ashamed that he now knows I’ve stalked her social.

“Yes, and I took my girlfriend before her too. It was a nightmare, I’ve taken 3 girls there and within a month of getting back I ended up breaking things off with every single one of them. Luce and I were actually talking about it last week, how naïve we were back then. Anyway, that’s another story, so yeah, I don’t really want you to come. I don’t want us to be like Luce and I were, I like you a lot, more than I’d like to admit Mia. I don’t want to lose you.” This last part makes my skin crawl, and I yank my hand away from his, angrier now. His face turns shocked, probably because he thought he’d just resolved the situation. No chance.

“You wouldn’t be losing me, Luke. You’d be breaking up with me, making a choice. Just like you did with the others. What happened to you and Lucy anyway? I thought you guys weren’t talking?” I’m being petty, I know, but I hate the idea of him still being friends with Lucy after all they’ve been through.

Luke lets out a long sigh, his brow furrowed in frustration. “We’re still friends Mia, I still see her every now and then and we text a bit. She’s been my friend for ages, I’m not just going to cut her out.”

“Luke I’m leaving this car before we can’t go back. I’m in no position to tell you who to be friends with, but I don’t trust her with you and I never will. You’ve been through too much for this to be completely platonic on her end, and I can’t and won’t let myself be collateral damage in the Luke and Lucy saga. I need to think about things, I need time. Goodnight, drive safe.” I lean over and give him a swift kiss on the cheek, opening the car door before he has a chance to reply and stalking off down the driveway. The cold air sooths me slightly, and I take a deep icy breath. As much as I don’t want it to come to this, it’s definitely me or her. It will break me if he chooses her, but they’ve been friends a long time and I’ll respect his decision if it’s her. I’ll never forgive him and probably will spend weeks plotting to kill him and Lucy in their sleep, but I’ll get over it.
