28. Liar Liar Pants on Fire

“Thanks,” Mimi and I say in unison as she hands us both a scalding mug of hot chocolate. I watch from my spot on her couch as she makes herself a cup of tea in the cup and saucer we bought her for her birthday.

“Okay, tell us everything.” Mimi says, blowing on her hot chocolate and draping her legs over mine. I heave a big sigh, and fix my gaze on the collection of shells on Melody’s mantelpiece. “Where are you up to in the story?”

“The girls pressured you to make a decision about Luke and you said you would end it with him.” Melody answers, gesturing for us to move over so that she can squish onto the couch as well.

“Right, so on Saturday we went out for afternoon tea at that nice café near school, the one that has the cool desserts? Anyway I told him we had to talk and he agreed, we basically just broke up. If you can even call it that since we were dating for like a week. What a joke hey?” I let out a bitter laugh, only half meaning it, hating myself for lying to more friends.

Luke and I didn’t break up. I told him all about the things my friends had said and that I was worried about it, and he suggested that we just keep our relationship on the down low for a while. It kind of sucks that no one can know, but I know he was nervous about his friends meeting me anyway so it’s not a bad idea. We didn’t really talk about Lucy, though he said nothing was going on but he’d let me know if he was ever going to hang out with her. After long consideration I had started to think that I was overreacting anyway, so I’m okay with that.

“Shit Mia that sucks!” Mimi screws up her face in disgust. “He was ugly anyway, you can do so much better.” Melody agrees and we all laugh. Finally my hot chocolate is cool enough to drink, and I swallow it down along with my guilt.

“How’s your love life anyway Mimi? What happened to that guy you were upset about the other week?” I steer the conversation towards something else so that I won’t accidentally tell them the truth.

“Nah fuck him, he didn’t text me back for like a week and then told me he wasn’t interested. I have got something interesting to tell you though…” She looks at me sheepishly, and then glances over at Melody in a way that makes me feel like I’m the last to learn this information.

“Yeah?”

“So Leo’s been texting me a bit… He’s asked me to go on a date with him next weekend.” Her expression is somewhere between excited and nervous, she must be worried that I’ll be mad at her because I kind of had a thing with him.

“Oh my god, no way! Dude that’s so exciting, where are you going? And no, I’m not mad, don’t stress girlfriend.”

“Okay good, I wasn’t going to tell you but then he asked me out and Melody and I agreed it wasn’t fair to keep the juicy goss from you. We’re going to that hipster café up at shops, you know the one that sells really good avocado on toast?”

“Coffee Time! I could die for their avocado, it’s like heaven! That’ll be cute, when are you going?” I’m trying to sustain my excitement for her, but deep down I am a little upset that she didn’t think to at least ask if I was okay with it first. Of course I would’ve said yes, but still, it’s the principle. Thankfully Mimi doesn’t notice my lacklustre expression, though Melody shoots me a sideways glance.

“Friday after school, then I wanna show him this look out I found once it gets dark enough.” Her eyes are shining and she can’t stop smiling, so I drop my anger in favour of happiness for my Latina friend. Melody’s cat crawls into my lap and curls up on me, and the talk turns to our upcoming exams and how close we are to finishing school.

I snuggle into Luke on the sofa, turned completely away from the TV so that I can inhale his delicious cologne. “How do you always smell so good?” I ask, my voice muffled because my head is in his t-shirt. He chuckles and kisses the top of my head. “Why do you always smell so bad?” He jokes, and I poke him hard in the side, laughing when he jerks away from me in faux pain. “You are so violent, don’t know how I can be in a relationship with you when this is the kind of thing I have to put up with!”

“It’s because I’m so cute. It cancels out the bad stuff.” I smile at him in a way that makes me dimples pop, because I know he loves it.

“Hey! That’s not fair, what can I do to cancel out the bad stuff?” He pouts.

“Nothing. It’s a ticking time bomb, one day I’ll just get sick of you and leave. Sorry man.” I smile at him sweetly and he bursts out laughing, suddenly standing up and throwing me over his shoulder. I scream in delight and bat my hands on his back, demanding he let me down immediately.

“Take it back! Say I’m the best boyfriend in the world!” He shouts as he runs around the living room table.

“Never!” I yell, squealing when he slaps me on the bum in response.

We both stop dead as Liz walks into the room, fresh from her morning walk, a coffee in one hand and Molly’s lead in the other. For a few seconds we just look at her as she looks at us, bewilderment clear on her face.

“You guys were meant for each other. Weirdos.” She says fondly, before turning on her heel and disappearing into the kitchen. Luke and I crack up laughing and he swings me back over his shoulder and onto the couch before sitting down next to me again. “She’s right Mia. I adore you.” He strokes my cheek with the back of his index finger and leans in for a perfectly soft kiss.
