Sitting around the table Thomas introduced the two girls to Gerry and Jan who welcomed them. Jackie sat opposite Adrianna and they were in deep conversation about trying a plum tomato with a cherry one to produce a cherry plum variety.
“They would produce a bigger yield and I think the taste would be sweeter too.
“You could be right said Adrianna; we will give it a go.’
Jan wanted to find out more about the two girls and bombarded them with questions.
“I know you have a good right to be suspicious of us Mrs Leteve but I assure you we work hard and we do not expect anything for nothing ; we pay our way don’t we Serene?’
“That is right we have travelled about for the last four years being moved on by people because of their bigotry. They call us Gypo’s, tramps, and thieves, which we are not.’
“I understand you plight said Janice and I’m sorry for being so intrusive but I like you came here from the outside to work on this farm. I came with Miriam my dear friend who married Thomas. They had thirty wonderful years together but she sadly taken from us some two years ago.’
Thomas lost a wife and me a very good friend; we miss her terribly. Janice wiped away the tears in her eyes.”
Gerry put his arm around his wife to comfort her.
“Right enough of this said Thomas who’s for a bottle of Elder flower wine.
My mother used to open a bottle or two and I have carried on the tradition.
“Would you get the wine son my hands are playing me up tonight?’
“Yes of course father; Thomas got up then went into the newly built wine cellar and brought out the wine. He used a cork screw and pulled out the corks then poured the wine.
Thomas raised his glass; to my mother Cora and Miriam.’
“To Cora and Miriam they all voiced.’
“I should like to make a toast to my mamma and pappa also.’
Again the glasses were raised Serene served her food that she made and everyone enjoyed it.
After the fish soup made with lemon juice which gave it a sour taste popular in Romania she also had made a tomato salad from the tomatoes that had come from the poly tunnels along with cucumber, sliced radish, and iceberg lettuce. Then Serene asked them to try her cottage cheese made with chopped chives.
“This is very good they all voiced; I think you could be onto a winner here Serene said Thomas.’
Should we give it a go in the supermarket asked Brian?’
“Definitely said Jackie as he scooped up some onto a half of tomato and popped it into his mouth.
