“Court is adjourned please stand.”
”You never told me about the gin Miss Villeverde, why not.”
It was because I needed a drink to get me through the day sir. I had to do all the washing, cooking, and cleaning for my father and two brothers whilst I lived at home after my mother died.’
“I told George Barrett that was why I left to go work at Wildacre Farm.”
“I haven’t touched a drop of gin since Jackie was born and that’s the God’s honest truth God strike me down.’
“That is good to know; as they are claiming you are an alcoholic.’
“Never sir,’ I had the odd nip that is all; I never drank the whole bottle, my father would have killed me.’
“Well there isn’t any other little surprises going to come up are there Miss Villeverde?
“No,’ I haven’t done anything Sir; he is just saying that so he can take my son away from me.’
“Well not if we can come up with something against Mr Barrett.’ Leave this to me and I will have my colleagues do some checking.”
I will see you here next week and can you arrange for someone to look after Jackie for a few days as this trial may drag on a bit.”
“Yes,’ I will ask my friend Miriam to look after Jackie for me. They live at Wildacre Farm.’
“Good; what about character witnesses do you have anyone who would speak up on your behalf?’
Yes,’ Mr and Mrs Hogg know me very well as I worked on the farm during the war.
“Excellent.’ now that is the kind of information we need.’
“Can they make themselves available next week?’
“I will ask but they run a farm sir, there are animals to feed and crops to harvest.
“We need them here before the harvest.”
Once outside of the courtroom Janice asked if William and Cora could attend along with her friend and Thomas next week.
“What about the farm Janice we just cannot leave it.
I know that and my barrister says if he knows what time you are to be called then he will ring the farm and ask them to come one hour before hand giving him plenty of time to get here.
He said that it would only take about twenty minutes to give evidence and that you could leave after that.”
“Alright Janice but we would have to go straight after but I will get Gerry Leteve to come and drive you home.”
