“You heard me; I’m pregnant.’
Thomas ran to his wife and kissed her. That’s marvellous news, do mam and dad know about it yet?
“No,’ I thought I would tell you first.’
“Ok can we go out tomorrow and celebrate darling; you know that I cannot leave these cows and it takes both dad and I to do it.’
“I know that Tommy; don’t worry the farm comes first I understand.”
“I’m sorry Miriam; you are married to a farmer. I cannot just clock off when I like you know that. I’d love to take you out I really would.’ Miriam set down a pot of tea for her husband; he picked it up and drank from it then headed out with it to the barn to check on the cows.
Later that evening at dinner Miriam broke the news to her in laws; she had already told her father who was delighted. He asked when she was going to bring Thomas for dinner and Miriam couldn’t give him a positive answer.
She told him that it was a bad time at the moment and that the harvest would be coming in and they had cows in calf. She asked him to come to the farm on Sunday for dinner and he agreed to come over.
Miriam told Cora about her father coming for dinner that Sunday and Cora said that that would be lovely.
“We don’t get a lot of visitors to the farm apart from deliveries or collections and we haven’t seen hide or hare of Janice and little Jackie since the wedding.
“Yes,’ I hope that she’s alright, with her not being on the telephone it’s hard to keep in touch with her.
Maybe I should have a drive over to her house to see how she is.
“You could come too and then we could take the baby out somewhere,
“That would be nice wouldn’t it?’
“Well there’s no time like the present; I’ve made a casserole and I’ve put it on a low heat in the oven and it won’t be ready for another four hours so let’s go now.
“I will just put on a little lipstick before we leave.
Cora grabbed her bag then waited until Miriam applied her lipstick she checked it with her compact mirror and powder case before putting on her jacket.
It was a lovely day so Miriam only wore her light box jacket.
Cora put on her hat and they walked to the barn to tell Thomas that they were taking the car and going to visit Janice.
Cora opened the window of the car to let some air in as it was boiling inside and the leather upholstery was burning her legs so she got a tartan blanket from the back and placed it on the seat.
