Each pole was hammered into the ground about a foot down then spread to about four feet apart. The wire had to be kept taught then when all the posts were in the battery was secured to the fence. When switched on you could here a click. Thomas checked it with a blade of grass he moved the grass against the wire until it broke the circuit and he was given a six volt charge which made him pull his hand away. This was enough to keep the herd out of the field until the grass had grown sufficiently to allow the herd back again.

Once that was done Thomas went back to the tractor and ate his lunch then he went back to the farm to feed the pigs and chickens. Miriam and Janice were mucking out the barns and putting down fresh straw.

“I didn’t think I would see you two until tonight how come they sent you again?

“Well actually we told Maureen Turnbull that we hadn’t finished the barns due to being instructed on how to milk the cows yesterday.

“We said that we would be milking them all week so she told us to show up and ask if you needed help.”

“Your not just a pretty face are you Miriam?

Well it was either that or spending the whole day weeding in the fields. I don’t think my back could take another day of weeding after Monday so here we are at your disposal.

“You do realise if you are caught on your own with me I might get into trouble.

“How come, your father owns this farm; does he not?

“Yes,’ but you are young girls and I am a young man I don’t think it would sit right with my father either unless you asked him.”

Alright when does he come back?

“He’s due to be back about six tonight maybe later.”

“We cannot do it tonight because we are going out right?

“Yes,’ right tomorrow I will ask my father and see what he says.”

“Now have you had any lunch?

“No we haven’t eaten since breakfast; we have fed the pigs and the chickens though and gathered all the eggs as well. The barns have been mucked out and the milk shed hosed out.

“Well done; stay here a moment and I will get you some lunch.”

Thomas ran to the cottage where his mother was making salmon fish cakes for tea.

“Mother can I take something for those two girls they have been here working since breakfast and they haven’t eaten lunch.

“Yes.’ alright take some of that pie I made last night and there are some cheese scones. I made some ginger parkin biscuits as well and there’s plenty of milk if the girls can drink it.
