5. Chapter five

Amii looked around her cheerleaders to find Keira’s face but couldn’t, she then searched for Drew’s face but again it was missing from the crowd. They re-appeared shortly after but as Amii started to approach them Terry swooped in-between. “So I was wondering if you fancied going out again sometime?” Terry questioned confidently as he ran his hand through his hair.

Before Amii could answer she caught a glimpse of Drew watching her, staring at her so intently like he was trying to read her mind then out of no-where it was like someone had clicked in front of his eyes, he had shot his glance from her to the window and quickly walked out.

Terry, not noticing the pause in Amii’s thoughts began to talk about a great Italian place but before Amii could respond again Sheena practically fell on him. Distraction diverted Amii made a hasty exit trying to see where Drew had sneaked out to.

She paused outside the bars door and frantically searched the two directions with her eyes. She began to walk down the street they had come and as she turned the corner she gasped at the scene before her.

Drew was being held at knife point. The man looked desperate, tatty clothes and mud matted in his hair. He was saying something and Drew seemed to be frantically looking through his pockets. She guessed his wallet but he came up blank. Without realising Amii was edging closer to the pair. The man spat some harsh words and drew the knife up ready to plunge. "NO!" Amii cried and without a single thought she lifted her hand to the attacker.

Amii’s eyes followed the knife as it flew to the ground and as she looked back she gasped at what she saw. The attacker was straining for breath with dark veins covering his face. She stumbled back as she realised she was not touching him. “What’s happening to me?” she whimpered out as Drew blocked her vision of the man. The loss of concentration had seemed to release the man and with a large thud he passed out on the ground.

"Are you hurt?" Drew asked, examining her.

Amii hysterically giggled "you’re the one that has just been attacked and you’re asking if I’m ok?" Drew’s wide eyes met Amii’s and a sea of calm washed over her.

"We need to go before he wakes up" Drew held Amii carefully as they began to walk quickly away.

The walk back was excruciating for Amii. Drew had not spoken again but kept giving her sideways glances and her head was in agony from the magic she had used. They were now on the home stretch Amii had had enough, she grabbed Drew’s arm in frustration and stopped him in the road.

They stood staring into each other’s eyes for a moment that seemed to be unmeasurable, both looking for answers she searched his face for any indication of either acceptance or the more likely response of legging it away from her.

Finally he broke the silence “It’s a good job he dropped the knife”

She couldn’t believe what he was saying, then again it was the rational, human explanation. Still she knew he had seen the black veins aswell “He dropped the knife?” she questioned.

“Yeah, guess he was older than he looked aswell or maybe hunger deprived. Hence the fainting” he continued walking.

She was dumbfounded for a moment, glued to the spot just watching the space between them grow.

“Come on slow coach, don’t want the crazy man gaining on us” she snapped out of it and jogged up to him. He walked her home in silence and at the door was particularly keen on getting away so they said a meer goodnight and he was off.

She couldn’t understand it, why had he lied? This was not what she had expected, at the very least she thought he would have freaked out and started pointing and shouting ‘WITCH WITCH’ but not to even acknowledge what had happened?

She went to bed straight away but couldn’t sleep, her mind wouldn’t let her that and the feeling she might be sick at any moment from all the shots she had downed.

The next day she was again prepared for the worst. She had previously agreed with Keira to meet and walk to college and she pulled on her hair as she waited for her. She thought maybe it would have taken the night for Drew to realise what had actually happened and it was all a trap to capture her and hand her over to the military or something.

She could see Keira coming from a mile off, her bouncy golden hair swishing as she walked and as soon as she caught a glimpse of Amii she started skipping towards her.

“Hey” she smiled as she linked her arm through Amii’s “And how are we feeling this morning?” she asked way too chirpily for Amiis liking.

“Eugh” Amii grunted “I told you I wasn’t a drinker”

Keira swiftly changed the subject “So a little birdy told me you have a not so secret admirer and potentially a date?”  She looked at her friend bemused for a moment her heart skipped a beat at the thought of Drew admiring until Keira clarified “Terry?” she questioned.

“Oh” Amii’s head spun away the thought of Drew, obviously he hadn’t mentioned anything to Keira about last night or any feelings he might have “Well he did start asking me out, I think but I didn’t actually give him an answer. Plus isn’t he and Sheena a thing?”

Keira scoffed a little “The drama that is Terry and Sheena is long over, for Terry at least. They used to go out but Terry broke it off only a few weeks into it but obviously you’ve noticed the way she acts around him I mean I love her an all but god that girl can be desperate”

“Well I dunno then, I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes and I don’t really know if I even like him that way” Keira stopped us walking and looked at me seriously for a moment.

“If that’s the only thing that’s stopping you then you should go, nowadays Sheena is all over a guy that pays her any attention at all and you’ll never know if you don’t give him a chance and he might be a better fit for you than say um other guys”

She could read her like a book. Obviously she meant Drew and a panic built up in her tummy, was she not good enough for her brother. Had he said that he wasn’t interested in her? Lots of questions surfaced but only embarrassment transformed on her face.

She picked up the pace again as she tried to hide her rosy cheeks but still the feeling stayed throughout the rest of the day. Luckily she didn’t have any classes with her and bar lunch she could keep clear.

At the end of college they had planned to walk home together but she rushed on ahead, she needed alone time to think. She wished she had seen Drew today but alas he was nowhere to be seen. She wanted to get it over with, the reaction that would make her lose her new friends.

That’s another reason why she was hesitant to go out with Terry, by the time Drew had told them all they would think she was a freak and he wouldn’t be interested anymore anyway.

For the first time ever she was ashamed of her powers, not knowing what they were for. She always thought healing was great, that she was good and was meant to do good things but this new feeling of feeding off of peoples essence it felt wrong and the guy had felt hideous but she couldn’t deny that she didn’t enjoy punishing him for his wrong doings.

Maybe that’s what she was meant to do now but she still couldn’t believe that it was right to hurt anyone. She thought about it all night, ignoring Keiras calls and decided that it was best to just not date anyone. At least until she could figure stuff out and anyway Drew and the gang might have chased her out of town with torches and pitchforks before then anyway.

She tried to get some sleep, but as usual failed.
