The year was 2017 and I had just turned 17 years old. I was a senior in high school when all this went down. My parents let me study abroad and sent me from a small town in Indiana to Sydney, Australia. What happened next no one will ever believe.
Every musician dreams of playing the Sydney Opera, and I was no exception. If you’ve ever seen the Opera house you’d know. On a hot day in December, summertime in Sydney, I was in dire need of some caffeine and found a place near the Opera house called “GG Espresso.”
“Beautiful,” I said as I made my way to the Barista. I found a seat and took out a beat-up composition notebook I’ve had since middle-school. I ordered an espresso with extra shots and felt a little jittery by the time I noticed the guy sitting across from me at my table.
“What’re you writing?” he asked.
He looked sad. He had black hair, shades, and a black beanie. “Lyrics,” I said, hardly looking up. “Why so incognito?” I asked, finally looking at him.
A glimmer of a smile met his lips. He was cuter that I first thought. I set my notebook down and gave him my full attention.
“No reason,” he replied. “I just… I cut it off with some friends of mine.” His accent made me swoon just a bit. I wasn’t sure what was happening.
“Oh yeah?” I replied. “I know how that is.”
He smiled a bit more. “I’m sure you do,” he said.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. Hey Alex, the text read, I hate to do this over text but I met someone. I can’t see you anymore. I was stunned. My eyes began to well. I stood, quickly packing my notebook away and said, “I’ve got to go.”
He stood too. “Look,” he said, “I don’t mean to act all sad I’ve just..”
“It’s not you,” I said, cutting him off. Kai had been my boyfriend since 8th grade. Now he broke up with me? Why? Because I want to study in Sydney for a semester?
I walked towards the exit. “Can I at least know your name?” he shouted.
I turned back, wiping the tear that ran down my face, and said “Alexandria.”
As the door shut behind he said, “I’m Michael.”
I didn’t think I’d ever see him again.
