It was warm. Way different than a New Year was back in my home state of Indiana in the United States.
I want you back, was all the text message said. It was left unanswered on my phone. Why did he want me back?
It was New Year's Eve and I was on the cover of the Sydney Times again. The title read: Mystery Girl Steals Michael Clifford's Heart.
I made a mistake, another text said.
My head was throbbing. It had been 2 weeks since the hospital. Michael had tried scheduling a date but I declined every time. Were headaches supposed to last this long? I ran to the bathroom and puked in the toilet. Ugh, it was so gross and I cried a little every time it happened.
I replied to Kai. Why? Why now?
A few minutes passed and he said, I saw you on TMZ. You looked so beautiful.
He can't be serious. I felt sad about it. He was my first real boyfriend and I was heartbroken when he broke me up that day I first met Michael. Then my heart fluttered. It wasn't Kai that caused this, but Michael. I had to text him.
I haven't been avoiding you, I said. I've been feeling really sick.
It was such a nice day and I had been inside for so long. I went to the front door and stepped outside. A car was outside with a man in it. I had noticed him the previous day when I looked out the window but had dismissed thinking anything was out of place. The man sat in the driver's seat with a camera pointed at me. I walked toward him and he pulled away rapidly.
"Huh?" I said aloud.
I went back inside and read the cover article about me:
The whereabouts of mystery girl Alexandria is known only by our very own gossip columnist who has decided to maintain her silence about the issue. Michael's ex has hired a private eye to determine where she lives. She has a beef to settle.
"What?" I said.
There was a knock at the door. I went to it and opened up. No one was there. I looked around then realized I was stepping on an envelope. Scrolled on the envelope was the name "Alexandria."
I picked it up and opened it. "Meet me at the airport. XOXOXO MC."
I smiled but it made my head hurt. I requested an Uber.
Ten minutes later Jenny showed up. She smiled widely at me. "You know," she said, "I stay near your house so that any time you request a ride I pick it up."
"Oh," I said. "That's, umm..."
"To the airport huh? Are you leaving?"
"No," I said.
"What are you doing there?"
I smiled, but it hurt so I just said, "Meeting Michael."
She squealed. "What's he like? Did you kiss him? What's it like to kiss him? Are you guys getting married? Has his crazy ex tried to kill you?"
"What? No. To the last question. His crazy ex?"
"Yeah," Jenny said. "She's a billionaire who inherited her parent's wealth when they died."
Jenny turned onto another road and sped through slow moving traffic. "I don't know anything about her," I said.
"She's bad news," Jenny said.
I didn't reply. I leaned my head back and closed my eyes. I was trying to fight the nausea. We pulled into the airport. Jenny dropped me off at the terminal.
I thanked Jenny and turned towards the doors of the airport when I saw someone familiar. It was Kai. He stood in front of me with a red rose in his hand.
