11. Chapter XI : chicano

|| Luke ||

We made it to the warehouse by noon. Everything was just as we left it when we fled to California. The bottle of rum was still on the kitchen counter. The shot glasses still sitting next to it. I picked it up and poured myself a single glass.

"You're gonna day drink?" Hazel asked, outraged.

"Yes, is there a problem?"

She rolled her eyes as I swallowed the liquor in a single gulp.

"Do you want one?" I asked her.

"Absolutely not!" She exclaimed. "Alcohol is disgusting."

I shrugged, "It's not half bad. You're just too innocent."

"If you don't mind, I'm going to take a shower," She said. "Where's the bathroom?"

I led her to the bathroom upstairs and turned on the water. After adjusting the water at the right temperature I turned to her.

"I could've done that," She mumbled.

"It's very sensitive so don't touch the shower handle," I said.

She held her hand up in surrender, "Okay."

I walked past her before she closed the door behind me. I heard it lock and walked to the end of the hallway where a metal door stood. I unlocked it and walked down the dark spiral staircase. After reaching the end of the steps I turned on the switch. The LED lights flickered to life.

Nothing was touched since we left. I nodded to myself and walked back up the stairs. I closed the door behind me and locked it securely. I was about to go back down to the kitchen when I felt a sudden arm on me. I quickly grabbed the hand and turned around. I was met with a tall boy, his eyes had a crazy look in them. I still had my hold on his arm as I thrust my elbow to his back and slammed him against the wall. My hand held the back of his neck.

"What do you want?" I asked.

He laughed. My grip tightened on his neck, "I said, what do you want. You have thirty seconds before I break your neck."

"SOPRANO will get you, Luke," He finally said. "Thomas is coming for you and he's going to get that girl as well. You'll be begging for your life."

I didn't give him time to laugh before I snapped his neck. He lay lifeless on the floor. I moved the body to a secluded hallway. We get rid of the bodies at night.

Suddenly I heard Hazel's scream coming from the bathroom. Fear shot through me as I remember the guy's words. "He's going to get that girl as well." I ran to the door and began banging on it, "Hazel!"

"Luke," She groaned.

"what happened?" I asked.

"I moved the shower handle," She replied.

"I told you it was sensitive," I said. She opened the door. Her body was wrapped in a blue towel and she held it close to her body. I shook my head, "Can never do what you're told huh?"

"It was an accident!" She insisted. "What was the banging noise?"

"I was moving something," I lied as I fixed the temperature's water. "There."

"Thank you."

I walked past her and closed the door behind me. I heard the sound of the door being locked. Suddenly there was loud banging at the front door. I pulled my hand gun out and quietly made my way downstairs. The banging continued and I pressed my back to the wall. I reached for the doorknob and pulled the door open, gun ready.

Michael, Ashton, Calum, David, Ernesto, and Jacob were all standing on the other end of the door. Hand raised in surrender. "Hey, we're not enemies," Michael laughed.

I scoffed and lowered my gun, "You're early."

"That's cause Ashton went over the speed limit by 20 miles per hour," Calum said. His gunshot wound was still in a bandage.

I laughed, "I thought your racing days were over."

"Still got it," Ashton stated.

They all pushed each other inside. I closed the door behind them and turned to find them all making themselves comfortable on the couch. Michael handed me a cigarette and I gladly took it. Calum tossed me a lighter and stuck the cigarette in between my teeth before I cupped my hand and the small flame to light the end of the cig.

I looked at the flame that danced above the lighter. It reminded me of the flame that was burning the saint in my hands.

March 19, 2014

Today was the day that It'd be official in the Gunn family. I've been an associate for half a year and finally the big boss, Mathew, has gained enough trust in me to allow me in. I'd already done part one, which was killing someone. I stood outside the door, waiting for the signal. It was a cold day in New York. I had my hands stuffed in the pockets of my coat.

Michael, Ashton and Calum had already got in the mafia. I was the only one left. The door creaked open and Mateo motioned for me to enter. I nodded and walked inside. Mateo took my coat when I gave it to him. I brushed any lint off my black suit before walking towards the circle.

The six most powerful men in the Gunn family were standing around me. Matthew begun the ritual. He held his hand out and I placed my hand, palm up, on his. He grabbed a dagger and sliced my two fingers. It was a quick sting but passed almost as quick as it happened. My blood fell on the concrete floor.

"Do you swear to always be here for your brother's and never betray them? Do you swear to always put the mafia first?" Matthew asked.

"Yes," I said.

"If your mother is on her death bed and I call you in, you leave your mother. It's mafia before family. We're your family now. Don't worry about your family, we'll have them taken care for. But you put the mafia first," Matthew continued. I nodded. Next he put a picture of a saint in my hands. He brought out a lighter and lit the end the end of the paper. The flame caught and I watched as the saint burned.

"If you betray any of your brothers, I guarantee you'll burn in hell like this saint is burning in your hands," Matthew concluded. My eyes never left the saint as she burned in my hands. Like I would burn if I betrayed my new family.

I extinguished the flame and exhaled the smoke. My mind drifted back to the five families in New York, the late 1900s. The Italian-American families that created a new kind of era. The era of Mafia. Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families each built up their own empire. Each had a boss, captains, soldiers and associates. Each were wealthy and each were almost untouchable by the government.

I thought about getting out of the field and just having the captains and associates to the dirty work for me, but I love the thrill of the chase. Why not run with the mafia that I run?

"Got anything for me?" I asked.

"Remember Evan?" Calum asked. "The guy who asked for some drugs to sell."

"Yea," I replied. "What about him?"

"Caught him smoking the stuff. Not only was he not selling it but he was also stealing from us," Calum added.

"What'd you do to him?" I asked.

"I killed him," Michael said.

I blew the smoke out of my mouth, "Good."

"Also this came in today," Jacob put a bag on the wooden table. I sat up and opened the bag, it was filled with hundreds of stacks of bills. "10K all in cash." I nodded and handed it to Ashton, he got up from the couch and went to the vault where we kept the money.

"Where's Little Miss Sunshine?" Michael asked in a sarcastic tone.

"Walking down the stairs." I looked up to see Hazel glaring daggers at Michael. He only rolled his eyes and got up from the couch to go into the kitchen. She smiled at Calum but he only returned a lopsided smile. Hazel sat next to me, but several feet away. She hugged herself tightly and eerie silence fell on each other.

"Who died?" Ashton giggled when he came back and plopped onto the couch next to Calum.

There was a knock on the door, "Hola, hola, hola. Hay alguien en casa?" Michael groaned when he heard the very familiar Cuban voice coming from the other end of the door. The knocking continued annoyingly. I exhaled and opened the door.

Jorge was a very interesting person. With his short curly black hair that never seemed to be brushed and his big brown eyes and a laugh that can be heard from the outside of a house-he may look crazy. And he was, but in a good way. He was in his mid thirties and already had a full beard. Not to mention he always had a cigar in his hands. He smiled at me and walked in. His white suit matching perfectly with his shiny white shoes.

"Aye chica! Quien es esta? La novia? De quien es? De Calum? O sabia que te ibas a meter con una chica de color!" Jorge exclaimed. Hazel gave him a frightened and confused look.

"Jorge," I said. "Calmate."

"I can see you returned from your little California rendezvous," Jorge said. He smiled at Hazel and extended his hand, she shook it but he kissed her hand. "Tengo el honor, mi princesa. Como te llamas?"

"Um," Hazel looked at me, then back at Jorge. "My name is Hazel?"

"Oh Hazel!" Jorge exclaimed at raised an eyebrow at Calum. "Hicistes bien amigo."

"Jorge, I'm not dating her," Calum said. Jorge had a small shocked expression, but it quickly turned into a smirk.

"La tocas y te mato," I said, threatening to kill him if he even touched Hazel. "What do you want Jorge?"

"I heard you were back in town so I decided to stop by and see if everyone was doing okay," He explained.

I rolled my eyes, "What do you need?"

"Oh if you insist," He took a drag from his cigar. "I'm throwing a party later on this week and I need some supplies."

"How much?" I asked.

"The usual," he replied and blew the smoke out of his mouth. I looked Jacob who nodded and stood up to go to the product vault. Moments later he returned with Jorge's stuff. Jorge cackled and took the drugs. He handed me a wad of cash, I counted it and handed it to Calum.

"Pleasure doing business with you," Jorge said and I opened to door as he walked out. I closed the door and he laughed his scream-like laugh. Michael giggled.

I dragged my hand down my face, "That's business."
