It's the next day, and I've never felt happier. For the first time, I actually have true friends. I smile to myself as I walk through the school doors. Someone bumps my shoulder playfully, and I turn to see Chase smirking. "Not skipping school today?" I say. His smirk turns into a grin. "Of course I am. I just wanted to check on you. I heard there's a popular new boy. He anything interesting?"
My smile grows wider. "If you count hot pop stars, then yeah. He's interesting."
He raises his eyebrows. "So the new meat's popular with the ladies, huh? Looks like David and I have found our competition, then." He cracks his knuckles. "But not for long." He smiles wickedly.
"Chase!" I scold, swatting his arm. He laughs. "Just kidding, Lina." And in a flash, he's gone. I sigh, shaking my head. I keep walking to class, and hear someone calling to me. "Hey! Lina! Wait up!" I turn, only to find Sage running up to me. When he reaches me, he's huffing and puffing from running. I just stand there. "Hey," I say with a smile. His voice comes out ragged. "Hi," he replies, "You wanna walk to class together?"
I shrug. "Sure." His face lights up, and he hold out an arm to me. "Shall we then?" he says. I take his arm, and me walk off. When we reach science class, the teacher immediately puts us sitting together. He smiles at me. God, why is he smiling all the time? Its like he's some happy puppy or something. I want to be friends with him, but now I really dont want to date him.
As the teacher, Mr. Brandt, talks and writes stuff on the board, I whip out my cornell notes from Avid (college preparation class) and start taking notes. He starts telling us about the project and what to do, demonstrating how to put the goggles on and all that, when I feel a pair of eyes on me. I turn my head, an notice Sage watching me. When I catch him looking, he blushes and turns back to the teacher. I study his notes, comparing them to mine, and am surprised to find that they are way better. I barely catch the teacher telling us to get started.
. . . . . . .
We're halfway done with the experiment when Sage accidentally knocks over one of the owl pellets that we haven't experimented on, then, while reaching to pick it up, just has to trip. He falls on the ground, and looks up in shock. I cant help it; I start laughing hard. It takes a moment, but he laughs too and then I finally hold out a hand to him to help him up. He takes it, and I pull him to his feet. We're smiling at each other when I feel a pair of eyes looking at me. I turn around, and see Chase staring at me through the window with a hard expression on his face. In the time it took me to blink, he was gone.
I shrugged it off. It was probably just my imagination. I turn to Sage, only to find him staring at the window I had just seen Chase in, glaring. So that proves it. Chase really was there. But why?
. . . . . .
As I Sage and I walked towards the lunch table, I noticed Candace and Chase waiting for us. I sat down next to Candace, and started speaking to Chase. "I thought you were skipping?" I look at him questioningly. He smiles, but its tight. "I couldn't miss lunch." he states, but his eyes are on Sage the whole time. Sage doesn't pay attention to him, and puts an arm around me. Chase stiffens and gives him a death glare. Candace squeals and snaps a picture on her Iphone 5. "What a cute couple!" she says cheerfully.
"We're not dating." I reply.
"We're not?" Sage asks me.
Chase laughs darkly. "Of course you aren't. And if you don't get your hands off her right this second, we're gonna have a problem."
Sage raises an eyebrow. "You sure about that?"
Chase grins evilly. "I've never been more sure about anything in my entire life. Now get that arm off before I bust in your pretty face."
Sage tightens his arm around me. "On second thought, I dont think I will. It's not like she's your girlfriend or anything."
Chase's eyes show nothing but rage and fury. He opens his mouth to speak, but I cut him off. "Why do you even care? You've never cared before."
And with that, he blows up. "Because I care about you!" Then he stands up and storms out the door. My jaw drops and, breaking out of Sage's grasp, I run after him. "Chase!" I shout, "Wait up!" He doesn't stop, and using my soccer speed I chase after him to catch up to his walking speed. When I catch up, I say, "What was that all about?"
He stops and looks at me. "Lina, I told you. I care about you," he says, not meeting my eyes, "I have since I first laid eyes on you." And leaving me shocked and surprised, walks off. Then, I immediately try to convince myself he was just kidding. Playing me. But then I remembered how he acted when he saw Sage's arm around me. How angry he got. Then a thought hit me.
