Beautiful, glorious Friday. The day where you know you have the weekend off from school to do what you want. The day where you get little to no homework. Where you can have a sleepover or stay up late. Where you can hang out with your friends the next day.
Usually I love Fridays. But as I walk into the lunchroom and see huge red words spray painted on the back wall, I immediately think my day has been ruined. The text is: 'Adelina Adams is just a backstabbing sl*t. She doesn't deserve friends!' and is signed off with: "Sincerely, your hateful admirer'. I freeze in shock. Who...who would write this about me? Then a single name enters my mind: David. My shock turns to anger, and it builds up quickly. I turn around and make a rush for his table, to find him smirking at the wall. I slam my hands down on the table space in front of him. "What. The. Hell?" I spit at him, grinding my teeth and shaking in anger. I've never literally shaken in anger before, so you can tell how mad I am.
He just smiles at me and says, " You got what you deserved, bitch." I slap him as hard as I can. "So what?" I say, taking satisfaction as he winces and holds his cheek,"Now you wanna make my life hell for no reason? You're a bigger jackass than I thought." Then I point at the wall. "But with your crappy handwriting, you didn't write that. So what did you do? Pay someone to do it?"
His smile grows. "You really want to know who my partner in crime is?"
I grind my teeth. "Yes."
He looks farther down the table. "Ella, come over here."
My eyes widen as I hear my old best friend's name being called. No. No no no no no no. Not Ella. She wouldn't have. She couldn't have. She walks over to him happily, then freezes when she sees my looking at her in horror. We don't speak for an all of 30 seconds, and then I break the silence by simply saying, "Why?"
"Because you left me. And David... he needed my help. He's my boyfriend now. And he cares about me more than you!" I flinch as she shouts the last part. Then I sadly shake my head at her. "I thought you were smarter than that, Ella." I'm walking away when a figure blurs past me. I quickly turn around, finding my brother lifting David up by his collar. "What the hell, douche bag?" Mitchell hisses, getting in his face. David laughs. "Your sister asked me the same question."
"And you didn't give her a response. So give me one, or you wont have that pretty face for long."
"She ruined me. She broke up with me. My reputation has been obliterated by the rest of the guys. Yes, I'm still popular, but she's still... better than me in that aspect. I had to settle the score."
"You're crazy. She'll always be better than you. Deal with it."
I don't think Mitchell saw the punch coming.
But it did. David's face went from smug to pissed in under five seconds, and he got a good hit on Mitchell. I hadn't noticed there was a crowd, but there was a big one around us, and sure as hell gasps erupted from it. Mitchell stumbled back, and tackled David over the table. I ran over there, grabbing Mitchell off of David and trying to pull him back. He broke free of my grasp, only to get grabbed again by Sage. Sage did a better job than I did, and dragged my brother over to an empty table, Mitchell cursing at David the whole way.
When David sat up, he had a bloody nose and he was just as mad as my brother. He stood up, glared at me, and walked out of the cafeteria like nothing happened. Ella rushed after him, leaving a shocked crowd behind. After about five minutes of silence, people walked back to their seats on the benches. Candace flipped out when we finally sat down. "Oh my gosh, Lina! Your brother is the running back!?"
For the first time since I walked int the lunch room, I laughed. "That's what you're surprised about?"
She blushes. "Well, I knew you guys had the same last name, but wow. I guess you family's just naturally popular. Do you guys live in a really big house, you know, like the popular people they show in movies?"
I roll my eyes. "What happens in movies stays in movies, Candy."
She looks disappointed. "Oh."
" Do you...um...have a crush on Sage by any chance?"
" No. Why?"
"No reason!" She says quickly, heat rising to her cheeks. I laugh. "Dork," I say, playfully nudging her, "You like him though, don't you?"
She rushes her words again. "What? N-no, of course not. Silly!" she nervously laughs.
I laugh at her. "God, you suck at lying. Have Chase teach you how to. That boy can fool anyone."
She ignores my statement. "Oh yeah, what's up with you and Chase?"
Her words take me back a bit. "Huh?"
"You know. He's always around you, he's protective. And from that time you broke up with David, I understand you guys kissed at the assembly. So," She puts the back of her hand under her chin," Spill."
"There's nothing between us."
"Uh huh. And that's why he was so jealous of Sage, right?"
"He was messing with me like he always does."
" He's never lost his his cool like that before though..."
" Candace. There is nothing."
She yawns. "Ok, Lina, if you say so." Then she changes the topic. We eat and talk for the rest of the lunch period. Sage and Mitchell joining us at some point. I listened to them converse, but the whole time I had one thing on my mind.
Did Chase like me?
