There is however one person who I need to say something to and firstly I must apologise because I’m sure you all will know that the press have hounded me about it
because I went to a jeweller shop in Montreal.
“Is Bella here?
Please come up as there is something I want to share with you and everyone.
Bella stood up in a white dress her hair had been tied back in a plait and she looked fabulous with some diamante earrings. Joe helped her up the stairs then got down on one knee.
“I know that it is no surprise Bella, but I love you very much. Will you do me the great honour of being my wife?
The room fell silent until Bella said yes and they erupted again. Joe took out the box that he had in his pocket and gave it to Bella who opened the wrapping nervously then opened the box to find a big blue diamond.
“I’m sorry but I had to borrow this so I could get your size. Joe handed her the ring.
She held out her hand and Joe slotted the ring on her finger and then he kissed her for what seemed like an eternity.
The crowd went wild and the camera’s flashed away.
Joe reached the table and then kissed his mother and hugged his three friends.
Joe’s medals sparkled around his neck in the lights of the room and everyone wanted a photo with him.
The evening was in full swing Joe and Bella slipped away after telling his friends and his mother and father.
They walked hand in hand up the road to her house where they spent the night together where they made love. Then lay in the bed just holding each other.
Over the next six months Joe was offered deals all over the place from advertising cars on television for Jaguar which they gave him the latest E type to drive around in he endorsed protein drinks and even launched his own muscle magazine called “Pumping Iron”
In his first year as the World record holder and Olympic Champion Joe had amassed over £2.5 million pounds giving talks on television all over the world.
He received an MBE in the Queens Honours list in 1977.
Joe and Bella were married in June that year and still live in Bella’s house.
Joe opened his own gym in Newcastle and still travels around the country running weight lifting courses in universities around the world. Joe successfully defended his European and world titles in 1978, In 1980 Joe defended his Olympic title and broke his own world record with a lift of 240. 5 kg.
Joe retired in 1982 and now is a leading authority in biomechanics.
Ralphie Mason, Paul Kerrigan, and Kevin Skipsey still remain friends with Joe the families meet up every summer on the playing field where the reservoir was for a picnic with their children
