Joe ducked under the bar that weighed twenty five pounds on each end there was twenty pounds. Joe took some of the powder from the tray nearby and rubbed his hands with it then set his legs like he had seen in the Charles Atlas Magazine before Eric could say a word he clean then jerked the weight above his head easily.

“Are you sure you haven’t lifted weights before Joe?

“Never Mr Sanderson.”

“Your son is a natural born weight lifter he has good style too. Joe lowered the bar then waited until Eric asked him to bench press another weight.

Now I will lower the weight into your hands Joe and I want you to push it up and lock out your arms, understand?

”Yes, Mr Sanderson I understand.”

“Good; now if you cannot lift it just tell me and I will take the bar from you.”

Eric lowered the bar and Joe took the weight he blew air out like a seasoned weight lifter and then the bar flew up.

The other lads stopped what they were doing and stood and watched as more weight was added and Joe kept pushing them up. On his sixth lift Joe struggled but got it up.

Right said Eric, have a little rest. Drink some water from over there.

Joe filled a plastic cup then began to take sips from it.

“Well then Mr Sanderson what do you think?”

“Think, do you know what your son has just lifted?

He just equalled the British record for a 16 year old and he’s only eleven.

Joe is a gifted boy and with guidance he could go far in this sport. That’s if he isn’t pushed too hard too soon. Joe came back to where Mr Sanderson was.

Now Joe would you like to lift that bar again for me but this time control you’re breathing.

Eric took his instamatic camera and asked Bob Curry one of his students to take a couple of photos where they could see Joe and the weights clearly marked. This time Joe was more prepared and he lifted the bar a lot easier. “Do you want to try another five on each end Joe asked Eric?

“Yes Mr Sanderson I will try.”

“Same technique as before Joe; control your breathing.

“Joe set himself took a few deep breaths then pushed the bar up all the way. The camera clicked away as Bob took several photos before Joe lowered the bar.

“Congratulations Joe, you just broke the British record for bench press.”

“Your son has extraordinary strength and we have to nurture it.

“Now I want you to come here on Monday; Wednesday, and Friday at seven o’clock. Bring training shoes some tracksuit bottoms and a vest. There are showers here so you can get one after your training so bring a clean towel as well and some soap and shampoo for that mop of curly hair of yours. Mike Philips, Bob Curry, Gerry Junghan, and Andrew Cherry all shook Joes hand and welcomed him to the club.
