The Park Keeper (Parky) came around to tell everyone that he was closing the park in fifteen minutes. They all walked to the furthest part of the park which would lead them to the top of Cedarwood Avenue and then back through the reservoir and then along to the Redburn and back home. Sunday night was bath night all over the world Joe’s grandma would say.
They had a bath room now and Joe didn’t mind going in. They said goodnight to the girls then made their way home.
Kevins mother was up in arms again as his father had stayed out at the pub again with his cronies as his mother called them.
He expected yet another row when his father did come in.
“Mam I’m going in the bath said Kevin as he entered the house.”
“Good lad then you can watch a bit of Telly if you like I’m going out.”
“Out mam, where are you going I’m going to the Percy Main club with your Aunt Sarah. There’s some dinner in the oven for you Kevin; your father’s dinner from lunchtime is dried to a stick so he can eat it as I’m not making him anything. “
“See you later.”
Now there will be hell on he thought; if dad knows mam has gone out on her own. He stepped into the bath that he’d added some Radox to and lay back to soak. It had been an eventful day he thought as he picked up the sponge and soaked it then let it pour over his hair. The Vosene shampoo smelled better than carbolic soap that he normally used his mother now bought Camay soap after seeing Katie Boyle advertising it on television. Things were looking up he thought as he washed the grime from his body.
He rinsed his hair then dried his eyes with the towel by the side of the bath.
Once he was finished he unplugged the bath and stepped out onto the mat and began to dry himself. He playfully used his fathers shaving soap then used his comb to get rid of the soap as he pretended to shave. He rinsed the bath out before putting
some clean pyjamas on the rail and he put them on then walked into the scullery; he turned off the oven then took the tee towel and took out his dinner. his mother had bought some pork chops with vegetables and Bisto gravy; she made him a large Yorkshire pudding to go with his dinner. he sat alone eating his dinner in the kitchen with his dinner on a tray as he watch an episode of the “Flintstones, a Hannah and Barbara Cartoon series. When that had finished he watched “The Rifleman with Chuck Connors.
It was eleven o’clock when his father returned drunk as a lord.
