I laid curled into the blanket watching Netflix on Asher's laptop while he took a shower. He was very reluctant to leaving without knowing I was one hundred percent sure I'd be fine for the ten minutes he wasn't with me. Then I flicked him off and continued watching Netflix. Not like I had stopped.
"Babe, I've got a great idea." He says drying his hair with the towel.
"What?" I asked.
"There's a carnival down the street. Well it's a 45 minute drive. But we could go there then go visit some things on the town." He said. Most girls would think that's romantic. I thought there was way to much effort involved and no mention of food.
"How about, we go to the carnival then we go out to eat at some new age restaurant?"
"Sounds great." He smiles walking over and shutting the laptop.
"Why?!" I shouted. People had done so much worse to me. But taking my Netflix was like all of it at once.
"Go shower, panda." He chuckled.
"You are satan." I mumbled sliding off the bed and walking to grab my phone. Asher's phone rang beside mine and I turned it over.
"Asher? Why is Andy calling you?" I asked turning around. He stared at me realizing if he pretended he didn't know or if he said anything along those lines I'd know he was lying.
"To...talk to you." He said hesitantly.
"What have you been saying?"
"Well it's obvious he's been calling for awhile. What have you told him?"
"Nothing. Just to talk to you."
"What's your password?"
"0-8-1-9. It's Gracie's birthday." He mutters. His call log was all calls to Andy and Priscilla.
"Asher have you even called your parents once?" I asked realizing something more was going on.
"They're worried about you."
"I'm going to take a shower and get dressed. When I get back either I want the truth or a better excuse." I said grabbing clothes out of my suitcase and walking into the bathroom. I threw Asher's phone on the bed. I contemplated what was happening. Worse case scenario is... Never mind best case scenario he's telling the truth.
"Best case scenario. Best case scenario." I muttered to myself. I got in the shower washing my hair and body. I had a hickey on my stomach and another on my hip. I rinsed all the soap off sighing. I wrapped my hair with a towel and my body with a different one. I looked in the mirror and saw three more hickeys on my neck.
"Good job Asher." I muttered squirting toothpaste on to my toothbrush. I ran water over the paste and put it in my mouth scrubbing and scraping anything and everything. Spit, rinse, brush, repeat. Over and over until all the toothpaste is gone. I slid on a floral romper and some black high tops. My hair was still wet but why would I care now. I put a flower crown on and attempted to cover my neck and face with makeup.
"Best case scenario." I muttered. I stepped out into the room and sighed.
"Andy's a drug dealer." Asher blurted out.
"He's a what?"
"A drug dealer. He wanted to tell you. There's so much more to the story but I think it's best if he tells you." Asher says.
"Asher what happened to no more secrets? Hmm? What happened to that?" I asked.
"I wasn't keeping it from you , I-"
"Asher did I know? How would I know if no one told me?" I asked.
"You're overreacting, you're going crazy for nothing." Asher says. I sighed.
"You're right. I'm overreacting." I said. I was going to be neutral about this. When we got home I'd deal with things.
"Okay, I'm happy you understand. Would you like to go now?" I nodded and walked out the room.
I didn't talk during the fair. I didn't want to be here. I wanted to go home and cry. I wanted to go back to earlier this morning. When everything was fine.
Ignorance really was bliss. Asher had won me a panda and kettle corn. We were on our way to dinner when his phone rang. I scoffed and shook my head.
"Hey Gracie, yeah, we went to the fair. Sure we'll meet you guys there." He slid his phone in his pocket.
"They're at my great grandmother's house. She made a family dinner. It's a family reunion thing." He says.
"Whatever." I muttered walking to the car.
"Peyton, I'm sorry."
"Asher, you're always sorry."
"Please forgive me."
"Stop lying to me. I honestly don't understand. If you would just tell me the truth this wouldn't be a problem."
"It's not our problem to worry about." He said.
"Let's just go." I said pushing past him and sitting in my seat. This would be a long ride. Asher pulled out of the parking lot and sped down the road. He turned the radio up and his eyes never left the street. Asher's phone started ringing but from the backseat.
"Can you pass me that?" He asked. I nodded and reached back but didn't grab the phone. Instead I handed him my middle finger and shrugged.
"Sorry, not sorry." I mumbled.
"God, Peyton could you please grow up?"
"Could you tell me the truth for once? Oh no? Funny how I saw that coming huh?" I asked
"This was a mistake." He mumbled.
"Don't I know it." I agreed.
Asher and I finally arrived. Gracie and Grant found it obvious that Asher and I were very annoyed with one another. But kindly didn't say anything.
"Look, could you act civilized for an hour or so until this over. I don't want to have to explain this all to my parents and my family."
"So I'm not the only person you lie to? Should've guessed."
"Are you done?" He questioned.
"I'm going to stay out here a while. I'll be in soon." I said.
"What are you going to do? Fuck my car up?"
"No, I'm going to cry. I'm going to cry and yell until I can pretend. And I don't want to see you. I don't want you to see me broken. Because you've seen me hurt. But when I'm broken only I can fix that. So go. Tell them I'm calling my parents." I said.
"Peyton." He said.
"Just go." I muttered sliding into the back seat of his car and curling into fetal position. Tears fell from eyes and on to the seats. I heaved a sob and bit into the sleeve of a random jacket. I heard the door open beside me and I sighed.
"Asher." I muttered.
"Oh god. I don't know if that's better or worse."
"It's me too." Henry muttered.
"Yeah, definitely worse." I muttered sitting up.
"Asher said you were in here crying. Henry was going to beat up Asher." Aric explained.
"You guys don't have to be out here."
"We wanted to come. We know Asher's history with girls. I told him. We both did. We told him you weren't like the rest and that if he planned to carry ok the way he usually did that he should end things. But I knew he wouldn't. He is interested with you." Aric says.
"Interested with me? Like an experiment."
"Sort of." Henry said.
"Wait, this is a game to him?"
"This is something of the sort.
"He's such a dick." Henry muttered
"Are you guys sure? I mean he's always incredibly apologetic." I said.
"I don't know. You may be different. You may not be." Aric said. I noticed Aric purposefully never made eye contact with me.
"What's up with all of you? You all act way too strange."
"Do you feel any better? Are you coming inside?" Aric changes the subject.
"What's going on? The truth."
"Grant's going to kill us." Henry muttered.
"Not if he doesn't know."
"She'll tell Asher. Asher'll tell Grant and we'll be dead."
"Guys, I won't tell Asher."
"I'm not really worried about that. There's just a lot. A lot he can't tell you." Aric defends.
"Just wait, until all this family shit dies down. When you go back hope we'll be in touch." Henry says nodding to get out of the car. I obey and slide out wiping my eyes and taking a deep breath. My feet carried me in to the house and my mind slid into my stomach not carrying what my heart did.
Not a good choice. Dumbass brain.
The first person to hug me was a little girl who bumped into me after running away from other little kids.
"Oops, sorry." She mumbles quickly hoping into Henry's arms. Henry tickled the small child and growled at her. Which in return she let out a small 'rawr'.
"Okay, tiger, go play with the rest of the zoo." Henry chuckled handing the girl to Aric who simply smiled and set her down gently.
"Bye Aric, bye Henry." The small girl said running to play.
"You handled that well." Henry chuckled in my ear. I rolled my eyes and shook my head. Henry threw his arm over my shoulder and pulled us towards what smelled like the kitchen area.
"Peyton Elizabeth! How are your parents?" Gracie asked smiling at me.
"Fine." I said shortly which everyone noticed.
"Is something wrong?" Gracie asks. Grant's attention is caught by my change in mood.
"Yeah, my mom's in the hospital again." I lied.
"Awh, sweetie." Gracie shouted hugging me. Cecilia hugged me and some other women joined. I bit my lip to keep from crying.
"What's going on?" Asher asked. The women pulled away.
"Peyton Elizabeth's mother has been readmitted into the hospital." Grant says.
"We should be getting back soon then?" Asher asked.
"Tonight if everyone is okay with it." Grant says looking at me.
"You can all stay. I'd rather go alone anyways." I said.
"Let Asher take you home." Gracie said.
"I'd rather not." I said walking away from Asher.
"Peyton, baby, are you feeling okay?" Philip asked.
"Yes, yes thank you I'm very fine. I've just lost two family members in the last four or so months and being here I've really seen a string family power. So yes. Yes I'm fine. But I want my mom to survive." I said walking out the door. Henry and Aric followed me.
"We'll drive you to the cabin." Henry says. I nod and sit back.
Why was this my life?
I contemplated who I could actually call to get me. Not Allan. Cynthia probably didn't own a license. Noel. I'd call Noel. I called the home phone because of he didn't answer his cell I could at least relay the message.
"Hello?" Noel said.
"Dad," I said tears forming in my eyes.
"Peyton what's wrong?" He asked.
"I need you to come get me, I need you to take me back home." I said.
"Where are you?" He asks.
"I'm in Arizona. It'll be a two day drive here if you're fast. If you come that is." I said.
"Of course I'm coming."
"Who's on the phone daddy?" Jasper asked.
"Hi! Hey Peyton!" Jasper shouts.
"I'm going to go pick her up." Noel says.
"Where is she? Can I come?" Jasper asks.
"Peyton?" Noel questions.
"Yeah bring him. I could use some brotherly love." I chuckled.
"Okay text me the address and I'll see you soon." Noel days hanging up. I nod and fall on to my bed tiredly. This whole everything has been too much for me. I need to prioritize. I need to handle one situation at a time.
Andy the drug dealer.
The Greene's family (mafia)
That's where I'll stop. I'll handle three at a time and the rest will have to come after. The second I got back in town I'd talk to Andy. Get the truth then handle this huge secret.
This started off cute but I remembered there was way to much drama to reveal. It'll calm down soon.
