6. Chapter 6
After poking her head in the kitchen and saying "Hi" to Mrs. Rowland, Mika collapsed dramatically onto the couch next to her boyfriend, Hunter, and released a heavy sigh.
"Hey," he said, putting his arm around her shoulders and tossing his video gaming controller aside. His game continued on the screen, his fancy car running into the side of a building and setting it on fire, but he focused all his attention on her. "You're here."
"Came right here from knitting group," she said, leaning into him. "Didn't even stop at home."
"Won't your parents be pissed?"
"I texted to say I'd be late." Mika gave a one shouldered shrug. "Official knitting group business and whatnot."
"So am I 'official knitting group business' then? Should I wrap myself up with a ball of yarn?"
Mika laughed, and it echoed in Hunter's expression. "As cute as that would be, you fall in the 'and whatnot' category."
"Are you sure?" he asked, half a smile quirking at his mouth the way it did whenever he thought what he said next was going to be funny. "Because if worst came to worst, I'd turn myself into a ball of yarn for you."
"Aww," Mika smiled and affectionately placed a hand on his slightly stubbly face and winked. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Okay," he said. "Cutesy stuff aside, for now-"
"-I have never heard you say 'cutesy' before," Mika interrupted, laughing. He gave her a stern look and she laughed again. "Okay, go on."
"I was about to ask, how's knitting group going this year?"
Mika sighed again. "Are you sure you want to know?" she asked.
"That bad, huh? Let it out."
"Well, it's not absolutely terrible, but it's certianly not good. A bunch of our best kniters graduated last year, and there hasn't been much interest. So of the few people that are there, Bethany knits but never talks, one of them, Lia, is a new knitter and she seems excited but I don't think she's going to commit, and Jared just shows up, stares at his phone, and sasses Coach Drina. I have no idea why he even shows up, he obviousy doesn't want to be there-"
"Jared Palmer goes to knitting group?" Hunter interrupted, laughing.
"I don't know his last name," Mika said. "Or anything about him, really."
"Well if it's the guy I'm thinking of, that's pretty hilarous. But go on."
"Eh, that's pretty much it. The only other person is Dan and he's cool. So really there's pretty much no way we can compete and do well this year, so it's another season of shame, I guess."
Hunter shook his head. "I bet you can whip them into shape," he said.
"That's just because you always root for the underdog and they never win," Mika said, shaking her head.
"Not when you're in charge of them, they don't," he said. "All your dogs are impeccably trained. I'm sure your group will be the same way."
She laughed. "If you say so."
