Carly was running on Fifth Avenue in New York. She had never been here before, what was she doing there anyway. Her thought was broken by the sound of thunder. Up above clouds swirled around the Empire State Building. There was loud roar in the distance, almost as loud as the thunder. The wind began to pick up and the sky got darker. Carly stopped running to see what she was running from. Nothing behind her. Suddenly a hand grabbed her shoulder. She gasped and jumped away. "You have to save us". Carly saw that it was a woman who touched her. Something seemed familiar about her. Her blonde hair and gray eyes. Before Carly could form a thought there was a bright light in the distance. The woman had disappeared. She watched as the light spread across the land, leaving behind...nothing. She watched in horror as the light go closer to her and brighter. It was nearly a mile away but she could feel the heat. Carly felt her body on fire and the light continued to get brighter, she screamed.
Carly gasped for air. She checked herself, still faintly feeling the heat of the light. What was that all about, she thought. She looked around and gasped again. She was inside a strange building. There was white curtains around her like a compartment. Just on the other side of the curtain she could hear the voices of two boys. Carly slipped out of the cot she was on and backed into the curtain opposite of the voices. She slowly opened the curtains behind her, but before she could turn and make a run for it she bumped into something.
"OUCH!", someone yelled from behind her.
Carly whirled around startled. "I'm sorry".
Carly looked down and saw a boy about seventeen. He was lying down on a cot similar to the one she was in. He had a terrible scar on his stomach like something tried to claw out his spleen. The boy looked up at her and smiled, "You must be the new one?"
"What is this place?" Carly demanded.
"This is a place where people like you and me go", he paused for a moment. "That sounded very creepy". He shrugged.
"Okay.." Carly said uneasily as she moved around him. "Well, I was kind of escaping, so if you don't mind.."
"Hey! The new one is gone", a voice from her compartment said.
"I won't tell them", the boy on the cot said as he winked at her. Then he fell asleep.
Carly turned and ran. It seemed like a maze of curtains. Every once in a while she would accidentally run into compartments occupied by hurt teenagers. What was is place, she thought. Finally an exit. Not wanting to spend another second in there she opened the door. She slipped out when someone stopped her.
"Where do you think you are going?" A taller male stood in the door entrance.
She backed up. "Who are you?"
"Relax", the boy said. "My name is Malcolm. We're not going to hurt you".
"What am I doing here?" Carly asked still skeptical. "Last thing I remember was being attacked by a monster and Mr. Redwood..." Carly gasped.
"Don't worry", Malcolm said. "He made it out. Kept ranting that he should be given a reward for 'going above and beyond the call of duty'. I could take you to him".
Malcolm explained to Carly what this place was. Camp Half-Blood. A place for special people like them. She met Chiron, who by the way is a centaur. She didn't need another visual on the monsters since she was nearly barbecued by one. Carly was following his explanation until he got to the gods.
"Wait", she interrupted. "Greek gods? And you said that one of them is my parent. Which one?"
"I really don't know", he said. "They usually claim you".
Great, Carly thought. My own godly parent didn't even want me. They continued, Malcolm showed Carly the cabins and the other campers. Something inside her made her less afraid of this place. She saw some campers in an arena sword fighting, others climbing a tower-with real running lava. He took her into the forest surrounding the camp.
"That chimera that attacked you", Malcolm began. "That is one of the downsides of being a demigod. We are always being hunted". He motioned to the air around him, "This place has a magic barrier so they can't get you in here".
We came to a small earth hut. "He's in there", Malcolm said then he turned and left.
She made her way to the entrance. There was no door, just an opening. Inside Carly found Mr. Redwood lying on a much more comfortable cot than hers in the infirmary. There was a woman sitting beside him. She wasn't your ordinary woman, she was blue. She held Mr. Redwood's hand and kept saying "What were you thinking?"
Carly cleared her throat. The blue woman jumped and turned around.
"Sorry", Carly apologized. Then she went inside and sat on the other side of Mr. Redwood.
"You must be Carly?" The blue woman asked. "I'm Brooke".
"Nice to meet you", Carly said. "Did you know Mr. Redwood?"
"Thomas is my husband", she said.
"They said he'll be okay", Carly said trying to reassure her. In all the years Carly had known Mr. Redwood, she had never asked if he was married or had a family, or even what his first name was. "He saved my life", she added not knowing what else to say.
"He talked a lot about you", Brooke said quietly. "Thomas always complained that he got stuck with a slow assignment. We have known that you were a demigod for a long time".
"Do you know who my godly parent is?"
Brooke shook her head, "It's hard to say".
Carly looked back at her life to see if there was something unusual. It couldn't be her father, he passed away and aren't gods immortal. It must have been her mother. "Do I remind you of any goddesses", I asked suddenly.
Brooke tilted her head. She stared hard at Carly like she was some sort of freaky specimen. "You know, you do remind me of someone..."
"Hey! New girl", someone shouted from the entrance of the hut.
Carly turned toward the new figure and breathed heavily. She had moved a lot when her dad was alive and everywhere she went she was the "new girl". You would think she would have gotten use to it, but honestly she wasn't.
"My name is Carly", she said politely.
"Whatever, Malcolm asked me to come get you", he said.
"Where are we going?"
"Um...it's lunch time", he said annoyingly. "Hurry up, Blondie".
Carly was ready to charge at this boy for being so rude when another one walked up to the entrance. "Kyle, it's okay, I got it from here".
Kyle then shrugged his shoulders and left. The boy who replaced him had a much nicer persona. He had curly black hair and was only a few inches taller than she was. He had black stained fingers and a tool belt around his waist.
"My name is Leo", he said and extended his hand. "Oh sorry", he took his hand back and wiped it on his equally dirty shirt.
Carly really didn't care so she took his hand, "I'm Carly".
"I heard about you, escaped from a chimera, nasty monsters", he then motioned toward camp. "I'll walk you to lunch".
"How long did it take you to take all of this in", Carly asked.
"Well, I have been through a lot of strange things, natural and supernatural. I think you just know that everything that is happening is real and you accept that. Plus, being a demigod means that our lives won't get any easier. If something can go wrong, it most likely will".
Carly half-smiled, "Murphy's Law".
Leo shrugged. "Sure".
As they walked to the open pavilion where everyone was gathering Carly asked him more questions about her godly parent but he didn't help much.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll be claimed after lunch", he said hope filled. "Besides, you came on a good day", he smirked. "It's capture the flag night".
