Ella pushed open the scarlet door to her house, and was greeted, as usual by a ginormous looking fish tank on the right wall, filled with dozens of colorful fish. Ella had stopped trying to name them all a long time ago. She walked past the fish and into the kitchen where Aunt Elizabeth was baking. Pancakes by the looks of it.
"Yum." Ella said, appreciatively at the golden brown deliciousness know as flat batter.
"Don't touch." Aunt Elizabeth said, smiling slightly at Ella from behind her blonde-grey hair which always fell into her face. She was greying early. Her daughter, Vinnie aged her. One day Vinnie came come wearing a cut off punk shirt, ripped jean shorts, dyed, pixie cut black hair, bright red lip stick, and seven piercings. Five on her ears, one on her nose and one above her lip. Elizabeth had fainted immediately.
Vinnie and Ella had always been on separate paths, even before she decided to turn into a goth. She was interested in climbing trees, Ella was also but Vinnie climbed the dangerously high ones surrounded by a crowd. Ella would pick flowers to admire their beauty, she would pick them to smear their leaves on the white pavement and see what color dye it made.
Ella blinked herself out of her reverie and walked out of the kitchen, her sneakers, silent on the wooden floor and Ella walked up the stairs into the small room that was hers. Originally, It was larger. But then Aunt Elizabeth and Vinnie came and we put a curtain through the middle of the room. One half was mine and the walls were painted lavender and poems and newspaper clippings and pictures were pinned up in a collage of sorts. On Vinnie's side, of her three real walls, each were a different color. One was dark, plum-ish purple, one was black and the other was a navy blue.
Her bed was pushed to one wall, the same wall Ella's was pushed to but on different sides of the curtain. Vinnie had to pass through Ella's room quite often to come and go and Ella kept some of Vinnie's secrets about her midnight outings in the school grounds with her few other gothic friends and some jocks. They all shared one thing in common. Weed. But no one really knew that aside from the other weed-ers and Ella.
When she walked into her room, Ella was surprised to see Vinnie, lounging on her bed, one heavy booted leg kicked up against the wall, the other hanging off the bottom of the bed, nearly blocking the door. The black, heavy boots were attached to fishnet stockinged legs attached to a skirt with skulls on it and a black tank top attached to a face that was chewing a piece of pink bubblegum which popped as soon as the door opened.
"Did you hear?" Vinnie asked. "About the murder. Mom won't tell me anything." Vinnie looked at Ella for a moment before deciding that Ella knew something and she intently asked, "What happened?"
"A mutilated body was found. In the Wilhelm woods." Ella said, knowing that Elizabeth probably had a good reason for not wanting Vinnie to know, but it was probably better that she heard from Ella than some kid at school. "Ilana McHaven." Vinnie opened her mouth to ask who but Ella interrupted her. "Niece of Iris. Was just visiting for a while. Went missing three days before." Content, Vinnie jumped up and grinned wickedly at Ella. She glided, gracefully to the curtain and walked halfway through it before she held up on side to below her chin, her fingers exposed and her face exposed but the rest of her body, hidden.
"I wonder what did it." She whispered dramatically before allowing the curtain to drop as she went into her side. Ella rolled her eyes and sat on the bed which was warm, all thanks to Vinnie. She swung her backpack next to her and distractedly did her homework.
