Diary Of An Awkward Teen

This is my entry for the year-round diary competition. This is a time I don't want to forget, as high-school begins in a middle school building and adulthood is less than four years away. Besides most of the names, this is all 100 percent true.

Halloween is coming.

We did a lot to prepare--that is, after 12. My mom gets a bit fed up when I talk to her before then.

At night, we went to a party with Sean, her ex-boyfriend, and Daniel, his uncle. I didn't expect it to take so long to get there, so I was surprised when it was a 52-minute drive to Sean's mom's house.

When we arrived off the inner state, we stopped for gas. Then we finished the trip in minutes.

I went inside early, before Mom got out. On the door, a sign read:

Yes, I thought playfully. I dare.

We walked in. Inside was several guests. I put my backpack on an empty seat, then took a look around. On one side there was a buffet and bathroom. On the other was the trail downstairs and a hallway with a ghost sheet draped over it. People surrounded me, most of whom I didn't know yet. I went downstairs to see what was down there.

Downstairs, I found a pool game in progress and a dance floor. I went in and joined the dance briefly before returning upstairs. There I ate a few baby carrots before sitting down with Mom and Ammon. But as we began to chat, I wondered what exactly was going on and if anything else was to happen.

As if she'd read my thoughts, Mom said she had brought her karaoke set. As she and Sean hooked it up, I found myself reunited with two old friends. Although these two adults didn't have a baby last time, they did now. His name was Aidan. Such a cutie.

Eventually I went outside to see what was there. A miniature graveyard and a pyre. Hm. I went back inside to find Mom had hooked up the karaoke set. I took the liberty of going around and announcing this to everyone. "Guys! Karaoke has begun! So if you want to be heard, get in line!" Of course I myself was first in line. Mom was the first to sing, and I was second.

I sang Starlight, and, as usual, registered to sing again once everyone else had. I also sang Queen's We Will Rock You and a second masterpiece from Muse called Uprising. Eventually I did a duet with Ammon where we sung Dynamite, easily the best song ever. I sat by and listened as everyone else sang. They all did great, and although there were a few loathsome songs people picked, like Under The Sea, Baby, and Barbie Girl, they still did a great job performing them.

We didn't leave until 11, which was the time karaoke ended. I went to find Ammon, and then we drove home. And to think we're holding our own party tomorrow!
