The pain in my chest has spread. It now pains me now to move, to bend over. Gritting my teeth, I lean over and pick up my books.
"Are you okay?" A classmate I don't recognize asks me.
"Fine," I say through clenched teeth. "Just fine."
The boy swoops down with ease, grabbing my books with one hand. "Here you go," he says breezily, setting the books in my arms.
"Thanks," I say, giving him a small smile. Once again, I feel a tingle of jealousy at how easy it is for everyone to move.
"So, you have Mrs. Drentz next, right?" He says as he continues to walk beside me.
"Yeah," I say slowly, readjusting my books in my arms. "How do you know that?"
I watch out of the corner of my eye as he looks away. I see a little blush appear on his cheeks. Slowly, I edge away from him.
"Well, I have to go." I lie. "Gotta meet up with my friends."
"O-okay." The boy frowned. "See you... around?"
"Okay." I say stupidly. "Bye."
"Bye, Maria!" He says, turning a hallway.
I just nod after him, realizing only seconds later I don't know his name.
