TOP TEN: LOW BUDGET COSPLAYS

Need to get a cool looking cosplay together for the con you're going to in a couple of days? Have no idea where to start? This article's got you covered! All of the costumes listed below include only items you should be able to find a couple of days before the con.

1) L [Death Note]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommended for: Anyone, but it's a bonus if you've already got short, dark, messy hair

What you need: Black wig that you'll probably need to style (unless you've got dark, messy hair already, in which case you've got it covered)

Black eye make up such as eyeliner/shadow are a must. Very white foundation or even face paint could also be used to really accentuate L's sickly skin tone

Long sleeved white t-shirt without detail

Jeans

Converse

2) Radical Ed [Cowboy Bebop]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommended for: Anyone

What you need: Orange wig

White, short-sleeved t-shirt

Short, black running leggings or similar

Goggles

3) Winry [Fullmetal Alchemist]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

Recommended for: People with long, blonde hair

What you need: A long, blonde wig (unless your hair is long and blonde, in which case...)

A coloured bandana or head scarf (red, orange, or green)

Black crop top or short black vest top

Boiler suit/cargo trousers/something similar (any colour)

Boots or sandals

Grey or brown gloves (optional)

Spanner (optional)

4) Pikachu [Pokémon]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommended for: Anyone

What you need:

Pikachu onesie or hoodie (I don't know about you, but I see these EVERYWHERE)

OR

Yellow Hoodie, which you could then stick/stitch the ears, eyes and mouth onto

5) Yukine [Noragami]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ☆

Recommended for: People with short blonde hair

What you need: Green/grey/brown parka or other green/grey/brown coat with a furry hood (optional)

Blonde wig

Red shinki mark on collar bone (draw this using red make up/face paint)

Blue pom-pom hat (I have no idea what the actual name is for these lmao, but anyway, this is optional if you wear the parka)

Blue hoodie

White vest top

Jeans

Converse

6) Misa [Death Note]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ☆

Recommended for: People with blonde hair and a lot of black clothing

What you need: A Death Note. This is especially recommended if you want to make really sure people realise you're cosplaying and not just into gothic fashion, wearing your normal clothes.

Hair tied up in Misa's specific bunches

Some combination of black clothing- I'd recommend a black tank top and skirt or black dress

Cross necklace and other jewellery such as bracelets, earrings (black and silver)

Black gloves

Black tights or black fishnets

Black shoes or boots

7) Kaneki (first few episodes) [Tokyo Ghoul]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommend for: People with short, dark hair

What you need: Blue hoodie

Jeans or trousers

White eyepatch (you can make this yourself out of cloth and string) or black mask (this will have to be bought as it is specific to Kaneki)

8) Luffy [One Piece]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ☆

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommended for: People with short, dark hair

What you need: Any red waistcoat, jacket, tank top or cardigan will be fine. Short sleeves are preferred but long sleeves would still be okay.

Jean shorts or blue shorts (white trim or lace is preferred)

Yellow scarf/sash (optional)

Black scar (you can make this out of eye make up)

Straw hat with red band (You can add the red band yourself; just use a red ribbon)

Sandals

9) Inukashi (Dogkeeper/Dogloan) [No.6]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

How recognisable will it be?  ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Recommended for: People with long, brown hair

What you need: Brown top/jacket/cardigan with one sleeve cut shorter

Blue jeans with one leg cut shorter

Optional grey belt

Long brown wig, styled so one strand falls in your face

Sandals

10) Yato [Noragami]

How easy is it? ★ ★ ★ ★

How recognisable will it be? ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Recommended for: Gods of Calamity, people with short, dark hair

What you need: Black tracksuit (you could also stitch on the yellow crown logo)

Light blue, slightly tattered scarf

Brown boots or Ugg boots

Or instead of going as a traditional character, one thing that might be easier would be cosplaying as a modern, hipster, schoolgirl, etc. version of the character, as these types of clothes would be much more widely available.

Important Stuff to Remember:

1) Your thirty-minute cosplay is probably never going to look as good as the Hanji cosplay your friend spent weeks buying all the stuff for.

2) Charity shops are your friend.

3) Even if you just buy/borrow/find/steal a few key recognisable parts of the cosplay, it can still be enough.

4) Make up is your friend. I swear, it can transform something you think is a bad cosplay into the cosplay of dreams.

5) No matter how much you want it, you're not going to find 3DMG for under £5 that can be shipped to your house in less than two days. Sorry. Hate to break it to you.

6) If your body is female and you are going as a male character, do not bind with bandages! This is really damaging!

7) Even if you're anxious about your cosplay at first, cosplaying is so much more fun than not cosplaying at all! You will meet lots of awesome people and you can instantly recognise common interests.

Whatever you decide to cosplay as, best of luck and I hope that it goes well! ~ Mirlotta
