The Rose

William. His name is William, and that's all he knows with exact certainty. What are all these fancy decorations? Where is he? Who exactly is he? All he can seem to remember is the image of a single rose.

1. Rose

"Wow this place is really colorful!" William looks around at all the interesting decorations.

He becomes awed as he looks at how lively everyone is. He decidedly grabs a passerby's arm and asks what all of this is about.

"Hey you, what is all of this, what's it here for?" He asks from the man whose arm he captured.

The other man looks at William like he's lost his mind.

"What are ya' slow or somethin'? It's the Halloween and Day of The Dead season! What, ya' live under a rock?"

The man angrily yanks free of William's grasp and huffs off.

"Halloween, Day of The Dead?" William confusedly tumbles the words in his mind. He doesn't recall something called that, so he decides he'll prompt what they are from another person.

"Excuse me, ma'am?" William cautiously jogs over to a kindly older women.

"Yes, young man?" the older woman politely smiles up at him.

He thinks this woman won't yell or snap at him like the other man did.

"Um, what is this, Halloween, and Day.... Day of The Dead thing?" He stumbles over his question in anxiety.

"You mean, you don't know young man?" The kind woman curiously asks him.

"No ma'am, I don't believe I do. Though..." He trails off lost in thought, and looks pointedly at the ground with blurry eyes as he becomes increasingly frustrated with not remembering anything.

"Oh, my dear young man, don't get upset now. I'll tell you if you want." She warmly smiles at William with fondness.

"You really will?" He perks up at her offer. The elderly woman lightly chuckles.

"Yes, I will indeed. You seem to be quite a polite young man. You also remind me of someone that was once very dear to me." She continues to give William an endearing and fond gaze.

He can't quite put his finger on it, but she seems quite familiar. "Well, I can't say that I'm him or know of him miss, but it is nice to meet you. My name is William."

he extends his hand to the kind older woman.

"And may I ask who you are?" he politely prods.

"You may, my name is Rose, it's a pleasure to meet you too young William." She tells him and puts her hand on his.

William doesn't shake her hand, but pulls it further toward him and kisses it.

Rose is at first a bit taken aback, but dismisses it. "My, I haven't had a man be so polite since my husband and son passed away" Rose forlornly states.

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that ma'am." William sympathetically looks at her.

"Don't be young William. It's the cycle of life. I also rest knowing that they didn't suffer when they passed."

William slowly releases Rose's hand, as he does, an image of a vase with a single deep red rose flickers across his mind. He also can vaguely hear a woman happily chuckle and exclaim, "It's wonderful William!"
