I was sat in the passenger seat as Luke drove me to work, it was quiet.
"Thanks for letting me stay the night." He glanced over at me sweetly smiling as I began to give him directions.
"Anytime." I replied looking back and doing the same. Luke then pulled the car up outside of the shop that I worked at and I felt a little disappointed as I gazed out of the window at the grey building. He quickly hopped out of the vehicle, jogging round to my door and taking my hand, guiding me out. He reminded me of one of those people who help royalty out of their cars, holding my hand gently so I kept my balance as I stepped out of the black vehicle.
"Thank you sir." I giggled as I watched him close the door.
"You're welcome ma'am." He bowed down to me and then winked. But I noticed Luke's jaw tense and his eyes grew darker as he spotted Joe watching us through the shop window.
"Luke?" I said breaking his stare and then his eyes met mine. He then briefly looked back at Joe and before I’d even had time to think he had pushed me up against the car and his plump lips entwining with mine. Sudden shock swamped my body and butterflies swarmed my stomach, his unexpected action catching me off guard. He released me from the embrace, lowering me down when the sound of someone clearing their throat interrupted us. Luke's eyes immediately retreating to his dark gaze at Joe stood in the doorway of the shop.
"I’d, best go." I said pointing towards him and rolling my eyes.
"Bye." He replied, pressing a small kiss to my forehead, his gaze not detaching from Joe for a millisecond as I begin to walk toward the entrance.
"Hey Kasey, nice to see you!" Joe called over to me over enthusiastically and then threw his arms around me, pulling me close.
"Hi Joe." I awkwardly spoke, not best pleased that he's called me in for work. He held me close to his body, his touch holding me for longer than usual. Way, way longer than usual. That's when I heard heavy footsteps coming from behind us. Luke. I quickly spun around to see him approaching, his face angry and unwelcoming. The flashbacks flooded my mind. He looked the same as he did in the alley that night.
"Luke stop!" I shouted at him as he came thundering closer.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" He bellowed at Joe.
"Just greeting the lady." Joe replied smugly with a slight chuckle.
"You sure you don't want to change that answer." Luke said sternly tightening his fists beside him.
"Now, why exactly would I want to do that?" Joe chuckled. He obviously didn't realize what Luke was capable of. My heart was now pounding in my chest, I wanted to calm Luke before he did anything stupid, but that was going to be virtually impossible. He walked forwards clenching his muscles and tightening his fist before it suddenly made contact with Joe's face. An almighty crack was heard as the force of Luke's fist seemed to break Joe's nose. I squealed as fear took over my body.
"LUKE STOP IT!" I screamed, tears seeming to suddenly shoot down my cheeks as I try to pull Luke away from Joe. But he just kept punching him. Soon Joe was on the floor moaning in pain, blood covering his face and clothes. As Luke continued I hung on to one of his arms trying to stop him. But he pushed me back making me fall to the floor with a thud, landing on my arm. I let out a scream and then Luke suddenly stopped and looked around at me. I was led on the floor, makeup stains down my face, crying, shaking. Luke then quickly helped me up staring intently into my eyes. He looked scared, sad.
"Look what you did!" I trembled through my tears as I pointed to Joe barely conscious on the floor.
"We've got to go." Luke demanded putting his arm around my waist and frantically encouraging me to walk back to the car.
"NOO!" I screamed at him and ran to Joe's side, holding his head towards me.
"Joe...Joe. Talk to me." I whimpered as he let out several little moans. Luke suddenly grabbed me around my waist, pulling me up from the ground and carrying me to the car. I screamed and shouted back to Joe. Struggling from Luke's strong grip. But no matter how much I screamed, shouted, kicked or hit Luke...he wasn't letting go.
Pain shot through my body as I landed on my hurt arm again, Luke throwing me into the back of the car. I quickly sat up trying to get out but he had locked the door. I then clamber to the front passenger door, but it was locked too. I stare out of the window at Joe led on the floor of the shop entrance in a pool of his own blood, just like the guy in the alley. I banged on the window for Luke to let me out but before I knew it we were speeding away down the road, Joe fading in the distance.
"LUKE!" I screamed, "WE CAN'T JUST LEAVE HIM THERE!" I continued to scream.
"We have to." Luke replied bluntly, his hands gripping at the steering wheel and face stern.
"YOU COULD OF AT LEAST LET ME HELP HIM!" I yell again and start to hit and punch him. At that moment, I didn't care that he was driving. I didn't even care that he had the strength of about five men. I didn't care that he could probably kill me with one punch. I only cared about Joe; my friend...led on the floor, bleeding to death.
My punches, hits and slaps didn't affect Luke as he carried on driving until we pulled up into the drive of a house. I was still attacking him with my fists, screaming and crying when the car came to a stop. Luke then immediately wrapped his arms around me, restraining me with his tight grip, hushing and trying to calm me down.
"He'll be fine. He’ll be fine." Luke's voice gently said as he kissed the top of my head. I looked up at him about to scream again but his eyes locked to mine. His blue swirls so deep. No, no, no....I thought to myself. He's pulling me in again. I gazed into his eyes wanting to break contact but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I stared back at him falling deeper into his mesmerizing gaze. I then felt his hand on my neck, then move to my cheek wiping my tears away as he pulled me towards his perfect pink lips for a sweet kiss. Shortly after I raised my voice, still shaky.
"W-where are we?"
"My place." He replied in a soft tone, his hand still touching my face. I did a tiny nod and then Luke said,
"Would you like to come in?" then I nodded again.
Luke walked around the car and helped me out as I supported my injured arm. When we got to the entrance he unlocked it and we walked in. It was nice, homely. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this, something scary maybe. As we walked in I sniffled a little, still recovering from my mini breakdown. Luke noticed and took my hand and softly backed me against the wall. He then flicked his eye contact between my arm and me, finally keeping his contact with my eyes he calmly said,
"I'm sorry." I looked at him forcing a smile and nodding.
"I know." I whispered running my other hand across his cut knuckles.
"You’ve got more blood on you then I did." Luke chuckled a little and I frowned at his insensitive comment, remembering that he wouldn’t let me help Joe.
"Think we best change that shirt, don't you." I nodded again. But then I was surprised when Luke's warm touch left my hands and began to slowly run up my sides and rise my top up. I let out a little gasp.
"No." I pushed my top back down and his hands away and he chuckled.
"I'll go get you a shirt to change into." Luke then left me stood in the hall whilst he fetched a shirt. When he returned he looked worried.
"You know, you can make yourself at home. You don't have to stand there the whole time." I looked up at him.
"I'll go change." I pointed up the stairs and took the shirt from his hands.
When I reached the top of the stairs I walked to the bathroom, the first room I came across, locking the door behind me. I then took off the blood stained jeans and shirt I was wearing and placed Luke's top on. It was huge on me. I then looked at my face in the mirror he had hanging on the wall. I had blood smudges on my face from where Luke had wiped my tears and mascara ran down my cheeks. So I quickly washed my face with a few things I found in the bathroom and then untied my hair from the messed up pony tail. I was starting to feel better already but a part of me felt guilty. I was just about to leave the room when I heard my phone buzz. I picked it up and looked at the screen. It was a message from my boss.
Kasey, don't come in to work today. Joe was attacked and taken to hospital with slightly critical injuries. The police have cleaned up and advised me to keep closed for a while whilst they investigate the crime scene. You'll get paid leave because I understand that it's not anyone’s fault you can't work, but I'm not sure when we will re-open. See you soon- Mike.
As I read the message my tears suddenly belted my face and my sobs echoed off of the tiled walls. It was my fault, all my fault. Then a panicked knock banged the bathroom door but I carried on sobbing.
"Kasey?! Kasey are you ok?!" Luke questioned me frantically, his voice raised. But I didn't answer. Then a loud crash made me jump as he broke down the door and raced in gripping me in his arms. As soon as I felt his touch I caved letting all my weight go. Luke lifted me and carried me down to the living room sobbing in his arms. He then sat on the sofa with me on his lap. My head was on his warm chest, I could feel it rise and fall with every breath...and it calmed me. When he was satisfied that I was calm he then asked me what happened and I showed him the text.
"Hey, cheer up. Read it carefully..." He showed me the screen and pointed as he read, "Slightly, critical....he'll be ok." I couldn't help but giggle. Luke spoke to me as if I was a child and couldn't read but I liked the fact that he made it seem better than it really was.
"You know I can read..." I poked his hard stomach with my finger.
"You know..." he began to reply the corners of his mouth turning up into a cheeky smile,
"...you look hot in my shirt."
