I gently dabbed at the bloody graze on Calum’s face, quiet and trying to blank out all of the thoughts that were racing through my mind. I felt empty again, like I was in another sort of trance.
"It sounded worse than it was you know..." Calum spoke and slightly shocked me as my attention skipped to his words. I sat to his side continuing to clean his wounds and we were now in his bathroom. He was perched on the edge of the bath tub as I leant against the sink basin until I stood, standing in front of him as I fumbled in the first aid box for something.
"Mmhmm...how's your jaw?" I mumbled and he moved it a little to test the pain.
"A little sore, but I'll survive. I'm a big boy you know." He chuckled then I dabbed his cut lip with the antiseptic wipe as he shied away at the pain. I think he was expecting me to laugh or even just smile, but no, I just carried on cleaning the cuts.
"What's wrong?" His soft voice asked me, becoming concerned. I tried to ignore the question and continued gently dabbing his soft skin but it didn't work for long.
“He hit your stomach too…” I spoke; nodding down towards his abs. Calum instantly lifted his shirt revealing his bare skin and I automatically shied away. I’m not sure why…but… I don’t know. He smirked at my response before his face fell concerned again. Calum then took my wrist, lowered it from his face, stood and looked directly at me. I looked down trying to avoid eye contact, twiddling my fingers. But I could feel his eyes burning into me, waiting for me to explain.
"He didn't say it back..." I paused and then looked up to Calum before brushing it off and turning to put the wipe in the bin.
“What didn’t he say back?” He questioned me confused and pulled me gently back towards him. My now watery eyes desperately stared back at him.
"He didn't say he loved me back." I expanded on what I had just said as a small tear escaped my eye and ran down my cheek. Words couldn't explain the way I was feeling as I stood there. So many emotions flooded my body. It was a little like the feeling you get when you’re little and don’t quite know how to control your emotions; like my entire insides were in a constant monotone screaming frenzy and no one outside could hear. I didn’t even realise I liked him this much; I was devastated and heartbroken that Luke's lips hadn't returned the three words I wanted to hear most. But a part of me was also relieved that he didn’t. Knowing how dangerous he could be, how unpredictable. He could have just saved me a lifetime of misery. I then felt Calum’s warm touch wipe the tear from my cheek as he softly whispered,
"Give him a little time...he will." his perfect smile assured me everything would be ok. I gently nodded trying to convince myself and sniffled a little. Calum chuckled as he lifted my chin up with his thumb.
"He'd be mad not too."
