The girls shared out the weight of the gold between them it weighed over 20 pounds each.

Somehow the girls got used to the heavy weight they were carrying. Robert protested saying he could carry some of the water but both his sons and the women would not have it.

Da’ we don’t want that wound to start bleeding again or we will be in big trouble.

They took a break every hour and drank at least a litre of water.

Rob reckoned if they could walk twenty miles each day they would be home in a week.

That’s a hundred and forty miles son; we will never do it.”

“We walked up and down four mountains and a bloody hill Da’ we can do this.”

“Alright son I believe you.

The cold night air made Robert shiver so James took out his breather. It was a jacket that kept heat in but let moisture out. They fed his good arm in then zipped it up over the bad one.

They carried on walking during the cool of the evening using the compass to guide them. It was one o’clock in the morning when they stopped and rested.

They ate the last of the wallaby that Rob had shot with another pasta meal.

Then they carried on until dawn.

“How far do you reckon we have walked said Becky?

“Maybe twenty five miles; who knows?

They lay down in their sleeping bags until the sun came up then began to walk again.

The water in the sealed bags was evaporating so they decided to drink that first.

They only had enough food to last them two days. Rob and James went hunting.

They shot two birds they looked like cranes but Rob didn’t care it was food. They built a fire then plucked the birds that weighed around 10 pounds each.

The meat was a little greasy but with boiled rice it made it more palatable to eat.

They kept the other bird for another meal.

Then James shot a snake that crawled out of a rock. When skinned and cooked it had the taste of chicken said Eleanor?

Even though they were eating a good meal they were losing weight with the heat.

By the end fourth day, all five of them had slowed down considerably; they had less than a gallon of water left and no carbohydrates or meat to eat; they had to find fruits and their prayers were answered when Rob came across some bush tomatoes they filled a sealed bag with them and then looked for some meat to eat.

James spotted an iguana and he went after it but it got away.

His brother cursed him for missing what would surely have kept them alive for another two days. Rob had to find water for them to drink. They only had two pints left.

Rob found some trees that looked like malee. He could extract water from the trunk he tied an open sealed bag around the trunk then made a funnel and placed it inside
